Analysis of Tobacco Cessation Programs in Dental Settings.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is a leading cause of preventable diseases, including oral cancer and periodontal disease. Dental settings offer a unique opportunity for tobacco cessation interventions due to the frequent patient-dentist interactions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted across 20 dental clinics. Participants included 400 adult tobacco users who were randomly assigned to either an intervention group (n = 200) or a control group (n = 200). The intervention group received a comprehensive tobacco cessation program consisting of behavioral counseling, nicoti

Pragmatic Return to Effective Dental Infection Control through Triage and Testing (PREDICT): an observational, feasibility study to improve dental office safety.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a substantial interruption of care, with patients and workers fearful to return to the dental office. As dental practice creates a highly aerosolized environment, the potential for spread of airborne illness is magnified. As a means to increase safety and mitigate risk, pre-visit testing for SARS-CoV-2 has the potential to minimize disease transmission in dental offices. The Pragmatic Return to Effective Dental Infection Control through Testing (PREDICT) Feasibility Study examined the logistics and impact of two different testing mechanisms (

Assessment of Self-Medication Behaviour in Response to Dental Pain in Two Populations, France.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Self-medication appears to be a common practice for dental pain. However, in France, its prevalence and patterns in dentistry have never been studied. The primary objective was to assess the prevalence and self-medication behaviours in two at-risk populations: patients consulting for acute pulpal or periapical pain and patients with dental anxiety requiring treatment under general anaesthesia. The secondary objective was to examine the influence of socio-behavioural factors on these practices. METHOD: Between April 2021 and May 2023, the behaviours of two at-risk popula

Experienced barriers and facilitators for integrating smoking cessation advice and support into daily dental practice. A short report.

In a controlled study, primary care dental professionals in the intervention group were encouraged to provide smoking cessation advice and support for all smoking patients with the help of a stage-based motivational protocol. The barriers and facilitators reported by the dental professionals on two occasions for their efforts to incorporate smoking cessation advice and counselling into daily patient care are summarised here. Lack of practice time and anticipated resistance on the part of the patient were cited as barriers by over 50% of the dental professionals in the first interviews. Periodo

Pulp stones can help in detection of calculus in the kidneys and/or in the bile--fact or fiction?

BACKGROUND: Pulp stones or denticles are frequently found in the dental pulp; there is, however, scarce evidence about this phenomenon. Regardless of the obvious endodontic problem of inhibiting access to the canals and their further treatment, they have not been given great importance. The latest experiences of scientific and practical research, including examinations of dental calcifications and their association with calcifications/calculi in the organism, have not been included in the literature. AIM: To investigate the possible association between dental calcifications and calculi in the

Prenatal Oral Health for Black Women.

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal oral care is a huge concern due to hormonal changes women undergo during pregnancy, during which pregnant women become susceptible to many oral diseases, such as periodontal disease. Disparities in oral health often affect women who fall into these categories: low-income, uninsured, and minority ethnic/racial groups. Having limited knowledge and a lack of access are significant contributing factors to the adverse effects of pregnancies. This qualitative phenomenological study aims to understand the perspectives of pregnant Black women and dental health care providers wit
