Growth outcome at 2 years using Fenton and Intergrowth-21st charts in infants less than 1500 g.

INTRODUCTION: There is no consensus on which neonatal chart is best to use in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. The aim of the study was to compare the Fenton 2013 and Intergrowth-21st (IW-21) charts based on their predictive ability for somatometry at 2 years, as well as to analyze factors related to short stature at 2 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cohort of children with VLBW born between 2002 and 2017. Association between neonatal somatometry (z-score by Fenton and IW-21) and risk of short stature (<-2 DS), head circumference <-2 DS and malnutrition at 2 years (BMI < -2 DS) was analyzed

Neonatal and fetal growth charts to identify preterm infants <30 weeks gestation at risk of adverse outcomes.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether a neonatal or a fetal growth standard is a better predictor of adverse in-hospital newborn infant outcomes. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate and compare the power of birthweight for gestational age to predict adverse neonatal outcomes using neonatal and fetal growth charts. Gestational age-specific birthweight was examined either as a percentile score or as a binary indicator for birthweight <10th percentile (small for gestational age) with the use of 3 fetal growth charts (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, World Health Organization, an

Customised growth charts in large-for-gestational-age infants and the association with emergency caesarean section rate.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Large-for-gestational-age (LGA) infants are at increased risk of intrapartum complications. However, some infants classified as LGA may be appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) if adjusted for maternal stature. We determined whether customisation of birthweight centiles by maternal height, or height and weight, improves the detection of LGA infants at risk of complications. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 38 246 term, singleton nulliparous women. We compared population birthweight centiles to those customised by height, or height and weight for complicati

FIGO position paper on reference charts for fetal growth and size at birth: Which one to use?

Publication of the Intergrowth-21st and WHO growth charts raises the question of which growth data prenatal providers should use in clinical practice. Is it better to use a universal chart applied globally, or metrics based on local or regional growth patterns? And what about customized charts versus local charts? FIGO has reviewed the different growth charts and studies assessing their reproducibility and predictive values for small- and large-for-gestational age newborns and, where available, adverse fetal outcomes. It concludes that local or regional charts are likely to be best for identif

Clinical charts for surveillance of growth and body proportion development in achondroplasia and examples of their use.

Clinical surveillance of infants and children with achondroplasia necessitates syndrome-specific charts due to extreme short stature with deviating body proportions. Height, arm span and leg length develop far below normal population ranges. We present growth and body proportion charts for ages 0-20 years, constructed from semi-longitudinal standardized measurements of about 450 children, along with some examples of achondroplasia typical and atypical growth pattern. We combine head circumference, height and weight for 0-4 years into one (infancy) page and height and weight for 4-20 years in a

Adverse perinatal outcomes in immigrants: A ten-year population-based observational study and assessment of growth charts.

BACKGROUND: Maternity populations are becoming increasingly multiethnic. Conflicting findings exist regarding the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes among immigrant mothers from different world regions and which growth charts are most appropriate for identifying the risk of adverse outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether infant mortality and morbidity, and the categorisation of infants as small for gestational age or large for gestational age (SGA or LGA) vary by maternal country of birth, and to assess whether the choice of growth chart alters the risk of adverse outcomes in infants categor

Impact of doppler reference chart selection on risk stratification in fetal growth restriction.

BACKGROUND: Doppler studies play a crucial role in evaluating fetuses with impaired fetal growth. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the clinical variability of various published Doppler reference ranges for umbilical artery (UA) pulsatility index (PI), middle cerebral artery (MCA) PI, and cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) in pregnancies complicated by impaired fetal growth, and their association with adverse perinatal outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study included all singleton pregnancies with estimated fetal weight (EFW) and/or abdominal circumference (AC) below the 10th percentile

A systematic review and meta-analysis to revise the Fenton growth chart for preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to revise the 2003 Fenton Preterm Growth Chart, specifically to: a) harmonize the preterm growth chart with the new World Health Organization (WHO) Growth Standard, b) smooth the data between the preterm and WHO estimates, informed by the Preterm Multicentre Growth (PreM Growth) study while maintaining data integrity from 22 to 36 and at 50 weeks, and to c) re-scale the chart x-axis to actual age (rather than completed weeks) to support growth monitoring. METHODS: Systematic review, meta-analysis, and growth chart development. We systematically searched p

Obstetric and pediatric growth charts for the detection of fetal growth restriction and neonatal adverse outcomes in preterm newborns before 34 weeks of gestation.

INTRODUCTION: Identification of fetal growth-restricted (FGR) infants depends on the fetal or newborn charts used to identify them. We aimed to compare the prenatal and postnatal diagnosis of FGR and their ability to predict adverse perinatal outcomes. METHODS: Observational retrospective cohort study of 95 consecutive mother-infant pairs with preterm birth between 24 and 34 weeks (study period: January 2014 to December 2015). Prenatal sonographic diagnosis of FGR, based on customized fetal growth standards and fetal Doppler, was compared with the postnatal diagnosis of FGR based on a birthwe

Comparison of Hadlock and INTERGROWTH-21st Growth Charts for Estimating Fetal Weight in the Third Trimester via Ultrasound.

Introduction Early identification of growth abnormalities is crucial in preventing fetal death and ensuring optimal care for fetuses requiring close monitoring and timely delivery. Sonographic estimation of fetal weight must be quantified in centiles according to gestational age reference charts to assess fetal growth velocity and size. These measurements can categorize the fetus as small, appropriate, or large for gestational age. Recent discussions have highlighted the increasing need for evidence-based guidelines for selecting the most suitable growth charts. Objectives The objective of thi

Comparison of Five Growth Charts for Identifying Small-Sized Fetuses and Their Predictive Value for Adverse Neonatal Outcomes.

PURPOSE: The main goal of fetal growth monitoring is to identify fetuses at increased risk of morbidity and mortality. This study compares 5 commonly used growth charts (Hadlock, FMF, NICHD, INTERGROWTH-21st, WHO) to assess their ability to identify pregnancies below the 10th percentile and predict adverse neonatal outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 572 singleton pregnancies with an estimated fetal weight (EFW) <10th percentile according to Hadlock, excluding multiple pregnancies or cases with maternal comorbidities. Maternal and neonatal data were collected, and EFW

The development of an alternative growth chart for estimated fetal weight in the absence of ultrasound: Application in Indonesia.

A fetal growth chart is a vital tool for assessing fetal risk during pregnancy. Since fetal weight cannot be directly measured, its reliable estimation at different stages of pregnancy has become an essential issue in obstetrics and gynecology and one of the critical elements in developing a fetal growth chart for estimated fetal weight. In Indonesia, however, a reliable model and data for fetal weight estimation remain challenging, and this causes the absence of a standard fetal growth chart in antenatal care practices. This study has reviewed and evaluated the efficacy of the prediction mode
