Growth and development of broiler breeders. 1. Effect of early plane of nutrition and growth rate.

In two experiments, male and female broiler breeders were reared on two different planes of growth as a result of early nutritional treatment. The starter treatment(s) consisted of a 19.5% crude protein, (CP), 2970 kcal diet from 0 to 14 days and 15.5% CP, 2750 kcal ration from 2 to 10 weeks. The birds in the grower treatment were fed the latter diet from 0 to 10 weeks. Both treatments were ad libitum fed from 0 to 3 weeks and then restricted to meet the breeder's recommended body weight targets. In Experiment 1, the starter treatment resulted in significantly heavier body weights at 3 weeks o

Roxadustat (FG-4592) accelerates pulmonary growth, development, and function in a compensatory lung growth model.

Children with hypoplastic lung disease associated with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) continue to suffer significant morbidity and mortality secondary to progressive pulmonary disease. Current management of CDH is primarily supportive and mortality rates of the most severely affected children have remained unchanged in the last few decades. Previous work in our lab has demonstrated the importance of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-mediated angiogenesis in accelerating compensatory lung growth. In this study, we evaluated the potential for Roxadustat (FG-4592), a prolyl hydroxy

Insulin and insulinlike growth factors in embryonic development. Effects of a biologically inert insulin (guinea pig) on rat embryonic growth and development in vitro.

Congenital anomalies occur up to four times more frequently in diabetic pregnancy than in the nondiabetic population. Although past work has shown that maternal hyperglycemia and hyperketonemia may increase embryonic abnormalities, recent experimental evidence suggests that low insulin levels may also contribute to diabetic embryopathy. This study investigated the effects of guinea pig serum (whose insulin is inactive in rat systems) on rat embryonic growth and development in culture. Supplementation of guinea pig serum with pork insulin at low (1 ng/ml) and high (5 ng/ml) physiological concen

Growth and development in rats and deficiency of magnesium and pyridoxine.

Eight-eight female weanling Sprague-Dawley rats were fed diets containing either 650 or 150 mg magnesium/kg diet and 7.0 or 3.5 mg pyridoxine-HCl/kg diet, in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement, during growth, gestation, and lactation. The objective of the study was to determine whether concurrent dietary deficiencies of magnesium and pyridoxine were synergistic, additive, or antagonistic with regards to effects on reproductive performance, growth, and development of offspring, and tissue content of magnesium and calcium. Body weight of dams and pups was not different between groups until day 9 of l

Effects of Growth Hormone on Osteoarthritis Development.

Osteoarthritis (OA), a chronic joint disease characterized by primary or secondary degeneration of articular cartilage and bone dysplasia, is associated with various risk factors and is the leading cause of musculoskeletal pain and disability, severely impacting the quality of life. Growth hormone (GH), secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, is essential in mediating the growth and development of bone and cartilage. Reportedly, osteoarthritis increases, and the growth hormone decreases with age. A negative correlation between GH and OA suggests that GH may be related to the occurrence and d

Development of spondylolisthesis after growth arrest.

Based on the observation of three clinical cases of late onset (after growth arrest) spondylolisthesis, the different pathogenetic factors for lumbar instability in adulthood are discussed. A causal classification based on functional and morphological criteria clearly separates the "genuine" traumatic spondylolisthesis from other forms causing instability (with spondylolysis) within a lumbar motion segment. The possibility of developing spondylolisthesis even after growth arrest is hereby proven. Consequences for appraisal procedures are discussed, and an example for possible surgical manageme

[Epidermal growth factor in tooth development].

The epidermic growth factor (EGF) inhibits the morphogenesis and cellular differentiation of dental tissues during embryogenesis. These effects are modulated according to the stage of tooth development. Thus, the cupula stage seems markedly affected contrary to the bell stage which continues to evolve eve in the presence of EGF. Distribution of EGF receptors is altered during the first stages or the morphogenesis and this is specific for each stage of dental development. Finally, some rare pathological processes, related to the EGF level, are particularly characterized by a very early growth o

Epidermal growth factor in the developing mammal.

EGF has been characterized as an important growth factor in mammalian development and function, but its precise roles and significance are not yet clear. EGF may have a role in embryogenesis and fetal growth, since receptors have been identified in fetal tissues. However, EGF mRNA has not been shown in the fetus, and it seems likely that the related peptide, alpha TGF, subserves a developmental role in the fetus. The mRNA for alpha TGF has been demonstrated in the fetus [22] and alpha TGF acts via EGF receptors. In the postnatal animal EGF mRNA, immunoreactive EGF and EGF receptors are present

Fibroblast growth factors in skeletal development.

Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) and their receptors (FGFRs) are expressed throughout all stages of skeletal development. In the limb bud and in cranial mesenchyme, FGF signaling is important for formation of mesenchymal condensations that give rise to bone. Once skeletal elements are initiated and patterned, FGFs regulate both endochondral and intramembranous ossification programs. In this chapter, we review functions of the FGF signaling pathway during these critical stages of skeletogenesis, and explore skeletal malformations in humans that are caused by mutations in FGF signaling molecules

[Intrauterine growth retardation and the developing brain].

Fetal growth restriction is the second leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality, behind prematurity, and is present in 5-12% of all pregnancies in the general population. Often confused with children constitutionally small for gestational age, those who had not achieved their potential for fetal growth and therefore having true growth restriction can be identified using customized growth curves. The point is to accurately identify fetuses with slowing growth or cessation of growth reflecting a pathological process, because these are at risk of death in utero or chronic fetal hypoxia

Fetal hemodynamic development in macrosomic growth.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the venous and arterial hemodynamics underlying macrosomic fetal growth. METHODS: Fifty-eight healthy women who previously had given birth to a large neonate were included in a prospective longitudinal study. Of these, 29 gave birth to neonates with birth weight ≥ 90th percentile and were included in the statistical analysis. Umbilical vein blood flow and Doppler measurements of the ductus venosus, left portal vein and the hepatic, splenic, superior mesenteric, cerebral and umbilical arteries were repeated at 3-5 examinations during the second half of pregnancy and com

The effects of a fluoroquinolone on the growth and development of infants.

Growth and development were monitored for up to 42 months in nine neonates to whom ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone, was given in the neonatal period at a dosage of 20 mg/kg/day. Ciprofloxacin was used only as a ¿life-saving' therapy in cases of sepsis produced by bacterial agents resistant to other antibiotics. Two other groups of nine neonates, matched by birth weight and gestational age, were studied as controls: one group with sepsis, which was effectively treated with cefotaxime and a group of healthy neonates. No statistically significant differences in growth and development between the

Fibroblast growth factors in mammalian development.

Polypeptide growth factors are secreted signalling molecules that function as intercellular communicators. Detailed analyses of the expression and function of members of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family and their recepotors have demonstrated that the FGF signalling pathways play essential roles in regulating cellular proliferation, differentiation and tissue patterning during vertebrate embryogenesis. Recent studies on the molecular basis of human dysmorphic syndromes have revealed that aberrant FGF signalling during limb and skeletal development can lead to pathogenesis.

Circadian control of histone turnover during cardiac development and growth.

During postnatal cardiac hypertrophy, cardiomyocytes undergo mitotic exit, relying on DNA replication-independent mechanisms of histone turnover to maintain chromatin organization and gene transcription. In other tissues, circadian oscillations in nucleosome occupancy influence clock-controlled gene expression, suggesting a role for the circadian clock in temporal control of histone turnover and coordinated cardiomyocyte gene expression. We sought to elucidate roles for the master circadian transcription factor, Bmal1, in histone turnover, chromatin organization, and myocyte-specific gene expr

Roles of growth factors in eye development and ophthalmic diseases.

Growth factors are active substances secreted by a variety of cells, which act as messengers to regulate cell migration, proliferation and differentiation. Many growth factors are involved in the eye development or the pathophysiological processes of eye diseases. Growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor mediate the occurrence and development of diabetic retinopathy, choroidal neovascularization, cataract, diabetic macular edema, and other retinal diseases. On the other hand, growth factors like nerve growth factor, ciliary neurotrophic facto

Suppression of Schistosoma japonicum Acetylcholinesterase Affects Parasite Growth and Development.

To further investigate the importance of Schistosoma japonicum acetylcholinesterase (SjAChE) in cholinergic signaling for parasite growth and development, we used RNA interference (RNAi) to knock-down its expression in adults and eggs in vitro. This resulted in its reduced transcription but also expression of other important genes involved both in cholinergic signaling and glucose uptake were impacted substantially. Significant decreases in AChE protein expression, AChE enzymatic activity, and glucose uptake were observed in the SjAChE-knockdown parasites compared with luciferase controls. In

[Mechanisms of growth, development and disease of the craniofacial skeleton].

Craniofacial skeleton is derived from several pieces of bone, which hold the brain and house the sensory organ of vision, hearing, taste and smell. It also serves as an entrance of the digestive and respiratory tracts. Hence, craniofacial complex develops under sophisticated balance between the shape and the function. Disruption of such balance leads to various types of malformation and/or deformation of the face. This review focuses on the molecular aspects of growth and developments of the craniofacial structures and also on the genetic basis of congenital craniofacial malformations.

Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling in development and skeletal diseases.

Fibroblast growth factors (FGF) and their receptors serve many functions in both the developing and adult organism. Humans contain 18 FGF ligands and four FGF receptors (FGFR). FGF ligands are polypeptide growth factors that regulate several developmental processes including cellular proliferation, differentiation, and migration, morphogenesis, and patterning. FGF-FGFR signaling is also critical to the developing axial and craniofacial skeleton. In particular, the signaling cascade has been implicated in intramembranous ossification of cranial bones as well as cranial suture homeostasis. In th
