Epidemiology of interstitial lung diseases in a native Afro-Caribbean population of French West Indies.

INTRODUCTION: Data about interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) epidemiology in the Afro-Caribbean population is lacking. Differences in incidence and prevalence compared to European populations have already been reported. The main objective of this study was to estimate ILD incidence in Guadeloupe overall and by etiology. The secondary objective was to determine the clinical, demographic, and environmental characteristics of patients with ILD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a descriptive epidemiological study to estimate the incidence and prevalence of ILD in Guadeloupe between 2013 and 2019

Prostate cancer as an occupational disease: the actual impact in a high-incidence area.

INTRODUCTION: In Guadeloupe, prostate cancer (PCa) shows very high incidence rates. This over-incidence is associated with the historical use of chlordecone in banana plantations. Since December 2021, PCa has been recognized as an occupational disease for agricultural workers exposed to this pesticide. However, patient identification and referral to compensation mechanisms remain limited. The aim of this study was to estimate the proportion of PCa patients in Guadeloupe eligible for occupational disease recognition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study based on the prospe

Medical and sociodemographic risk factors for preterm birth in a French Caribbean population of African descent.

There appears to be an incompressible high rate of preterm births among populations of African origin irrespective of their geographic location. The objective of this study was to assess the risk factors for preterm birth in a French Caribbean population of African descent, offered medical care comparable to that on the French mainland, but presenting a higher rate of preterm birth. The study was based on a birth cohort at maternity hospitals in Guadeloupe (French West Indies) including 911 singleton pregnancies enrolled during their third trimester check-up visits. Associations between risk f

Extensive variation and strain-specificity in dengue virus susceptibility among African Aedes aegypti populations.

African populations of the mosquito Aedes aegypti are usually considered less susceptible to infection by human-pathogenic flaviviruses than globally invasive populations found outside Africa. Although this contrast has been well documented for Zika virus (ZIKV), it is unclear to what extent it is true for dengue virus (DENV), the most prevalent flavivirus of humans. Addressing this question is complicated by substantial genetic diversity among DENV strains, most notably in the form of four genetic types (DENV1 to DENV4), that can lead to genetically specific interactions with mosquito populat

Tracking Enterobacteria, microbiomes, and antibiotic resistance genes from waste to soil with repeated compost applications.

The dissemination of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and genes is one factor responsible for the increasing antibiotic resistance and the environment plays a role in resistance spread. Animal excreta can contribute to the contamination of the environment with ARBs and antibiotics and in some cases, environmental bacteria under antibiotic pressure may acquire antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from ARBs by horizontal gene transfer. In Guadeloupe, a French overseas department, organic amendments derived from human and animal waste are widely used in soil fertilization, but their contribution

The Guadeloupean perinatal mortality audit: process, results, and implications.

In 1983, we implemented an ongoing perinatal mortality audit in Guadeloupe to identify factors underlying the current level of poor perinatal outcome and to stimulate increased provider motivation. The audit was part of an active research approach to document the specific nature of the perceived perinatal health problem, to modify provider behavior through the use of this acquired information, and, ultimately, to decrease avoidable perinatal deaths. We investigated all 320 perinatal deaths in Guadeloupe during 1984 and 1985. Nearly one-half of the perinatal deaths reviewed were determined to b

10-year educational programme aimed at rheumatic fever in two French Caribbean islands.

BACKGROUND: In less developed countries, rheumatic fever still occurs. We started a long-term educational programme in two French Caribbean islands that was directed at the public and at health-care workers to see whether we could reduce the incidence of rheumatic fever. METHODS: Our 10-year programme started in 1981 in Martinique and Guadeloupe, and was based in the community and in clinics and hospitals. The programme established a registry of all cases of primary and secondary rheumatic fever (diagnosed by Jones' modified criteria), with systematic hospital admission of children. We graded

Reconstructing the silent circulation of West Nile Virus in a Caribbean island during 15 years using sentinel serological data.

The dynamics of zoonotic infectious diseases with silent circulation may be imperfectly understood and monitored using passive (or reactive) epidemiological surveillance data only, highlighting the interest of quantitative methods like modelling. West Nile virus (WNV) is a widespread mosquito-borne virus transmitted from birds to "dead-end" hosts including humans and horses, in whom it can be fatal. It was first detected in Guadeloupe, Caribbean, in 2002, although no WNV clinical case in humans nor horses had been reported on the archipelago before 2024. Undetected infections represent a risk

Shifting From Sectoral to Integrated Surveillance by Changing Collaborative Practices: Application to West Nile Virus Surveillance in a Small Island State of the Caribbean.

After spreading in the Americas, West Nile virus was detected in Guadeloupe (French West Indies) for the first time in 2002. Ever since, several organizations have conducted research, serological surveys, and surveillance activities to detect the virus in horses, birds, mosquitoes, and humans. Organizations often carried them out independently, leading to knowledge gaps within the current virus' situation. Nearly 20 years after the first evidence of West Nile virus in the archipelago, it has not yet been isolated, its impact on human and animal populations is unknown, and its local epidemiolog

Is atypical parkinsonism in the Caribbean caused by the consumption of Annonacae?

An abnormally frequent atypical levodopa-unresponsive, akinetic-rigid syndrome with some similarity to PSP was identified in the Caribbean island Guadeloupe, and was associated with the consumption of plants of the Annonacea family, especially Annona muricata (corossol, soursop) suggesting a possible toxic etiology. Annonaceae contain two groups of potential toxins, alkaloids and acetogenins. Both alkaloids and annonacin, the most abundant acetogenin, were toxic in vitro to dopaminergic and other neurons. However we have focused our work on annonacin for two reasons: (1) annonacin was toxic in

Nutrition Literacy, Hydration Awareness and Food Label Use in School Populations: A Cross-Sectional Study of Students and Teachers Across European Contexts.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition literacy is increasingly recognised as a key determinant of dietary behaviours and long-term public health outcomes. Schools represent strategic settings for strengthening nutrition literacy-related competencies, including hydration awareness and food label use, yet comparative. However, descriptive cross-country evidence across European school contexts remains limited. METHODS: A cross-sectional, school-based survey was conducted among 432 students (aged 11-16 years) and 108 teachers across five European contexts (Italy, Germany, Cyprus, Serbia and Guadeloupe [France]).

Chemicals sorbed to environmental microplastics are toxic to early life stages of aquatic organisms.

Microplastics are ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems, but little information is currently available on the dangers and risks to living organisms. In order to assess the ecotoxicity of environmental microplastics (MPs), samples were collected from the beaches of two islands in the Guadeloupe archipelago, Petit-Bourg (PB) located on the main island of Guadeloupe and Marie-Galante (MG) on the second island of the archipelago. These samples have a similar polymer composition with mainly polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). However, these two samples are very dissimilar with regard to their cont

Migration and multiple sclerosis: the French West Indies experience.

The French West Indies (FWI), i.e., the islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe, have recently experienced the emergence of multiple sclerosis (MS). This epidemiological upheaval followed a return migration of the FWI population that had previously migrated to continental France. The prevalence MS was 14.8/10(5) (95% CI: 11.9-17.7) on Dec. 31, 1999 and its mean annual incidence was 1.4/10(5) (95% CI: 1.0-1.8) for the period July 1997 to June 2002. The prevalence of MS in Martinique, that received more return migration, is higher than that of Guadeloupe (21.0/10(5) vs. 8.5/10(5)). This emergence o

Detection of persistent viremia by a live attenuated vaccine strain of the chikungunya virus in a blood donor.

We report here the case of a blood donor who tested positive for chikungunya RNA by nucleic acid testing introduced in Guadeloupe (a French island in the Caribbean) to prevent the transmission of arboviral infections by transfusion. The strain was isolated, and further investigations revealed the presence of the IXCHIQ live attenuated vaccine strain in blood 1 month after vaccination.

Imported zoonotic Ancylostoma ceylanicum and Ancylostoma braziliense infections in a cat in Romania.

Hookworms are widespread zoonotic parasites affecting humans and companion animals worldwide. We report molecular characterization of Ancylostoma ceylanicum and A. braziliense in a cat imported into Romania from Guadeloupe, an overseas administrative region of the French Republic in the Caribbean. This finding underscores the role of molecular diagnostics in detecting the transboundary introduction of exotic hookworms with significant zoonotic potential.
