BACKGROUND: Herpes gestationis (HG) is a rare, pregnancy-related skin disease characterized by the production of an autoantibody to a component of the hemidesmosome. It is associated with the class II antigens HLA-DR3 and HLA-DR4, but its potential association with the "class III antigens" C2, C4, and factor B has not previously been studied.
OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to study complement polymorphism in HG.
METHODS: Using electrophoresis and immunofixation techniques, we determined the allele frequencies of C4A, C4B, C3, and factor B in 42 patients with a history of HG.

HLA antigens were investigated in 129 patients with various types of carcinomas of Waldeyer's ring; most of them were undifferentiated carcinomas. Fifty-five Caucasoid patients with polymyalgia rheumatica or giant cell arteritis were typed for HLA, A, B, C and DR locus antigens. In the total patient group, DR4 had a significantly increased frequency. The prevalence of CW3 and CW6 was also significantly increased, the rise of CW3 possibly being attributable to its well-documented linkage disequilibrium with DR4. The rise in CW6 cannot be attributed to its known linkage disequilibrium with DR7.

AIM: To report on our large German collective and updated data of 142 patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) type 1.

Patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) in association with either Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) or Sclerodactyly were tested for HLA-A, B and Dr antigens and the phenotypes of the 4th component of complement (CA). Significant associations were identified between HLA-Bw62, Dr4, C4B2.9, C4A8 and females with SS-RA. The MHC antigen frequencies noted for secondary Sjögren's syndrome differed from those reported for their respective primary diseases and the implications of these observations are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the associations of HLA class II antigens with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in a Spanish population.

Agranulocytosis develops in approximately 1% of patients with chronic schizophrenia treated with the atypical neuroleptic drug clozapine. Previous studies have not identified the mechanism or risk factors for this adverse reaction. We describe two children who had Fisher syndrome subsequent to Campylobacter jejuni enteritis. The C. jejuni isolates from both patients, who lived in different areas, belonged to PEN 2: LIO 4. One patient had the following human leukocyte antigens (HLAs): HLA-A24, 33; B44, 52; DQ1; and DR2, 6 antigens. Another had the HLA-A24, 33; B44, 54; Cw1; DQ1, 4; and DR4, 6. An effort should be made to isolate C. jejuni from patients with Fisher syndrome and to perform HLA typing so that the pathogenesis of this syndrome can be clarified.
