Haemophilus influenzae type b bacteremia in older children.

Haemophilus influenzae type b (HIB) is a well-recognized cause of serious infection in infants and toddlers. However, little information exists regarding HIB infections in older children. This report describes serious HIB infections in 23 children (eight immunocompromised; 15 immunocompetent) older than 59 months of age. Data were collected over an 11-year period. The mean age of the children was 7.6 years (range, 5-15 years), and 14 were male. While three of the eight immunocompromised children had HIB pneumonia, none of the immunocompetent group had this diagnosis. Eleven of the 15 immunocom…

Lethal Haemophilus influenzae type b infection in mice.

Previous animal models of invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b (HITB) infection are characterized by a low mortality rate. We produced a highly lethal infection in CF1 mice using mouse passage, mucin, and hemoglobin to enhance infectivity. Infection by the intraperitoneal route was followed by progressive peritonitis and bacteremia with subsequent HITB infection of the brain and meninges, and death. Death occurred between eight and 72 hours after infection and was associated with 10(6) to 10(9) HITB per ml of blood and with 10(2) to 10(5) HITB per g of brain. Mucin-hemoglobin did not augment…

Haemophilus influenzae Bacteremia and Pneumonia: A Case Report.

This study reports a case of respiratory failure and pneumonia attributed to infection from a confirmed case of Haemophilus influenzae in a patient with past medical history of interstitial lung disease following a COVID-19 infection. An 88-year-old man with significant past medical history of interstitial lung disease (ILD) and self-catheterization due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) presented to the ED with shortness of breath and cough. Examination revealed reduced respiratory effort and scattered rhonchi throughout the lung fields. Urine cultures were positive for extended spectrum b…

Haemophilus influenzae purulent pericarditis in an immunocompetent individual.

Purulent pericarditis is a rare bacterial illness in the post-antibiotic era that is defined as pericardial infection with gross or microsco … ed 350-400 ml of yellow murky pericardial fluid. Blood cultures and pericardial fluid cultures grew Haemophilus influenzae (H. influenzae). Upon further history taking, patient revealed experiencing upper respiratory symptoms and being diagnosed with pansinusitis 2 months before his admission. He was treated with IV ceftriaxone for 4 weeks from the day of negative blood …

Pediatric endogenous Haemophilus influenzae endophthalmitis with presumed hyposplenism.

BACKGROUND: Endogenous bacterial endophthalmitis is a rare but potentially devastating intraocular infection that can have severe sight-thre … e right eye and was treated with intravenous, topical, and intravitreal antibiotics and vitrectomy. Haemophilus influenzae was isolated from the blood and cerebrospinal fluid cultures, but not from the aqueous and vitreous cultures. Four months later, her pediatrician diagnosed Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis, but she had no clinical signs of endophthalmitis. Seven …

Systemic humoral immunity to non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae.

Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is a major cause of respiratory but rarely systemic infection. The host defence to this bacterium has not been well defined in patients with chronic airway infection. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of humoral immunity in host defence to NTHi. Responses were measured in control and bronchiectasis subjects who had recurrent bronchial infection. Antibody and complement-mediated killing was assessed by incubating NTHi with serum and the role of the membrane-attack complex and classical/alternate pathways of complement activation measured. …

[Epidemiologic profile of Haemophilus influenzae infection in Tunisia].

Haemophilus influenzae, a commensal bacteria, is frequently incriminated in broncho--pulmonary surinfections and severe diseases as meningitis, pneumonia and septic arthritis, particularly in young children. A multicenter study was conducted to establish the epidemiological profile of Haemophilus influenzae diseases, to determine the rate of antibiotics resistance for guide therapeutic and preventive strategies. The identification was based on the requirements for X and V factors, and the serotype b determined by agglutination. The betalactamase production was done by nitrocefin test. Antimicr…

[Epidemiologic aspects of Haemophilus influenzae type b infection].

This paper reviews the role of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) as one of the most important pathogens causing invasive infectious diseases, especially in the first 2 years of life. In developing countries H. influenzae is responsible for 30% of all pneumonia cases with positive cultures and for 20% to 60% of all bacterial meningitis cases. In this study we compared Brazilian and international epidemiologic data obtained from several bibliographic databases (MEDLINE, 1966 to 1995; LILACS, 1982 to 1995; Thesis Databank, 1980 to 1995; and Dissertation Abstracts, 1988 to 1994). The incidence o…

Haemophilus influenzae intra-amniotic infection with intact membranes.

BACKGROUND: Amnionitis rarely occurs with intact membranes. Haemophilus influenzae is a rare pathogen in intra-amniotic infection, but its importance and prevalence could be increasing, as reflected by the growing number of reported cases in the last 20 years. METHODS: Using the key words "amnionitis," "intra-amniotic infection," "chorioamnionitis," and "Haemophilus influenzae," we searched MEDLINE files from 1980 to the present. Articles dating before 1980 were accessed from cross-reference of the more recent studies. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: H. influenzae, a nonmotile, aerobic, gram-negati…

Epidemiology of invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b disease.

Invasive disease caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) is typically a disease of young children, starting when the protection afforded by maternal antibodies is exhausted and ending when the child's own antibody production to the Hib capsular polysaccharide begins efficiently. There are, however, large variations between population groups in the incidence of the disease and the age at which it appears. Potential factors behind this variation include virulence genes of the bacteria and genetic susceptibility genes of the host. Although such genes and their effects can be identified, the…

Haemophilus influenzae causing conjunctivitis in day-care children.

The role of Haemophilus influenzae in acute purulent conjunctivitis was studied during an outbreak among children in day care. Five day-care centers contributed 20 cases and 35 controls. All the children were subjected to culture of the nasopharynx and the eyes. H. influenzae was carried in the nasopharynx of 53% of the children (range between day care centers, 20 to 91%). Of the 20 children with acute conjunctivitis 8 had eye cultures positive for H. influenzae, 2 had Moraxella and the remaining were culture-negative. Ten colonies of H. influenzae were isolated from each positive culture and …

Acute scrotum due to Haemophilus influenzae type b.

The acute scrotum in infants and children is generally due to torsion of the spermatic cord, torsion of the appendix testis, or acute epididymitis. An infant is presented who was found to have epididymitis and a scrotal abscess due to Haemophilus influenzae type b at the time of surgical exploration for suspected torsion of the spermatic cord.

Ventriculoperitoneal shunt-associated infection due to Haemophilus influenzae.

We report two children with ventriculoperitoneal shunt infections due to Haemophilus influenzae, type b. One child was cured with systemic and intraventricular antimicrobial therapy alone. The other child had persistently positive ventricular fluid cultures, ultimately required shunt removal in addition to antimicrobial therapy, and still had a relapse, which responded to antimicrobial therapy alone. In treating children with this problem we recommend removal of the shunt apparatus unless there is prompt sterilization of ventricular fluid and clinical improvement. Systemic antimicrobial therap…
