Longitudinal bracketed epiphysis (delta phalanx) is a rare congenital anomaly that affects phalanges in the hand more commonly than toes. We present a rare case of congenital hallux varus with longitudinal bracketed epiphysis of proximal phalanx with bifid distal phalanx of the great toe, which was managed with monorail type of external fixator. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of its successful implementation in simultaneous treatment of longitudinal bracketed epiphysis of the proximal phalanx of the great toe and hallux varus. Apart from adding to the literature a case

BACKGROUND: Recurrence is one of the most common complications following hallux valgus surgery. Moreover, hallux varus occurs in cases of overcorrection. We aimed to quantitatively measure, using radiographic examination, the dynamics of the soft tissues that act on deformities (recurrence of valgus and occurrence of varus) after the surgery.
METHODS: This retrospective single-institution study included 60 patients (98 feet) who underwent hallux valgus surgery between 2009 and 2018. According to radiographic findings of the foot under weightbearing conditions at postoperative month 1, we exam

Sixteen patients with duplication of the hallux were reviewed. Follow-up averaged 21 years. Duplication may be classified into three groups: simple hallucal duplication, a transitional type with a short thick first metatarsal, and complete first ray duplication. Routine removal of the most medial hallux or ray is to be avoided. Careful preoperative assessment is necessary to compare hallucal function, cosmesis, and metatarsal weightbearing. Surgery should also correct the associated congenital hallux varus. Surgical complications include functionless hallucis from inappropriate selection and m

To identify complications that necessitated revision surgery after the primary operation, a multicenter retrospective chart review was conducted for 646 patients who received either a modified chevron-Austin osteotomy (270 patients), modified Lapidus arthrodesis (342 patients), or closing base wedge osteotomy (34 patients) to correct hallux valgus deformity. Revision surgery for complications was calculated and compared. All surgery was performed by 1 of 5 staff foot and ankle surgeons at Kaiser Permanente medical centers. Complications included recurrent hallux valgus, iatrogenic hallux varus

UNLABELLED: All reported rheumatoid arthritis (RA) forefoot deformities in the literature thus far have arisen from shoe wearing populations. Our aim in this study was to compare hallucal deformities seen in a shod population with an unshod population. A population comparison was undertaken in 2 specialized foot and ankle units, one in India and one in the United Kingdom. In the shod population, there was 1 hallux varus deformity, 10 without hallucal deformity, and 90 hallux valgus deformities. In contrast, in the unshod population, there were 19 hallux varus deformities and 6 hallux valgus de

BACKGROUND: Polydactyly of the foot is a relatively common condition. Approximately 15% of cases are preaxial, with one third of these cases involving duplication of the metatarsal [metatarsal type preaxial polydactyly (MTPP)].Surgical reconstruction of polydactyly is indicated to improve shoe tolerance. Reconstruction of MTPP has traditionally involved resection of the hypoplastic lateral ray in addition to soft tissue reconstruction to correct hallux varus. Poor postoperative results have frequently been reported, primarily due to residual hallux varus. We present a novel surgical technique

Longitudinal epiphyseal bracket of the first metatarsal, also known as first enclosed metatarsal, is a rare congenital disorder characterized by an abnormal development in the length of the first metatarsal ray because of the asymmetric presence of a longitudinal epiphyseal bracket. This causes interruption in the lengthways development of the affected bone, which becomes squat and short, with a trapezoidal or triangular shape, leading to a hallux varus deformity. First enclosed metatarsal occurs in 2% to 14% of all congenital defects in the hands and feet; with bilateralism in 75% of cases an

BACKGROUND: Modified Bösch osteotomy, or distal linear metatarsal osteotomy (DLMO), is one of the minimally invasive correctional operations for hallux valgus deformity. Although the clinical and radiographic results of DLMO have been previously shown, the relationship between clinical outcomes using a validated patient-reported outcome measure and radiographic corrections have yet to be evaluated.
METHODS: A total of 70 patients (97 feet) treated at our hospital were included in the study. The Self-Administered Foot Evaluation Questionnaire (SAFE-Q) and radiographic data were evaluated at a

The research results are inconsistent that assessing whether the increased obliquity of the distal articular surface of the medial cuneiform leads to an increase in hallux valgus angle. Thus, this study investigated the relationship between distal medial cuneiform obliquity and hallux valgus by measuring various angles in weightbearing anteroposterior radiographs of the foot. In total, 679 feet of 538 patients with the radiographs were included in the study. We measured radiographic parameters including hallux valgus angle, first to second intermetatarsal angle, metatarsus adductus angle, firs

Metatarsus adductus is common congenital deformity. Usually during growth, the deformity resolves. If the deformity persists, it can be associated with hallux valgus (HV) deformity. There is high prevalence (30%) of metatarsal angle (MTA) in patients having HV. There are lateral toe deformities associated with this setting. Correction HV associated with metatarsus adductus is a challenging surgery, and the outcomes have been disappointing over the years. The surgical approach should address all the deformities-the HV, the MTA, and the lateral toes deformities at the same setting. Minimal invas

Metatarsus adductus is common clinical entity with an estimated prevalence of approximately 30%. Multiple radiographic methods exist to evaluate the extent of the deformity, with the Sgarlato and Engel methods most commonly used. Surgical treatment varies, consisting of proximal versus distal metatarsal osteotomies, TMT arthrodesis, and realignment of the lesser rays. Particularly in severe cases, addressing all deformities is critical to obtaining a good outcome.

Underlying metatarsus adductus (MA) is commonly seen in patients with hallux valgus (HV) deformity, with implications regarding procedure selection and hallux valgus recurrence. Lapidus, or first tarsometatarsal fusion, is commonly performed allowing reduction in intermetatarsal angle (IMA) but this procedure has not been established as an approach to provide partial correction of MA deformity. Retrospective assessment of preoperative and postoperative metatarsus adductus angle (MAA), IMA and hallux abductus angle (HAA) in patients treated with Lapidus fusion for HV. Significance was determine

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to (1) determine the association between varus knee deformity and ipsilateral foot and ankle morphology, and (2) evaluate the relationship between varus knee deformity and foot and ankle pain in patients with end-stage varus knee osteoarthritis (KOA).
METHODS: A total of 213 patients who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty for end-stage varus KOA were enrolled in this study and divided into a 'severe varus group' (n = 119) and a 'mild varus group' (n = 94) based on preoperative knee varus degree. Morphological parameters and pain incidence in the foot and an

The hydrolethalus syndrome is an autosomal recessive malformation syndrome which has been recently described in Finland. The name hydrolethalus refers to the main findings, namely polyhydramnios, hydrocephalus and lethality. The patients are either stillborn or die soon after birth. The typical roentgenologic findings are hypoplasia of the tibia associated with the anomalies of the respective bone ray, e.g. metatarsus primus varus atavisticus, hallux varus or hallux duplex varus and hydrocephalus with extreme micrognathia and a specific midline defect of the occipital bone.

The aim of this study is to find basic quantitative geometric data that may contribute to the understanding of the etiology of hallux valgus. Embalmed specimens with existing hallux valgus (N = 39) were dissected; 28 variables were measured with a Vernier caliper gauge and toe goniometer. Correlations between pairs of independent variables were calculated. Linear dependency of the hallux angle, varus angle, and the width of the forefoot on a number of independent variables was analyzed by multiple linear regression. A least squares method and a stepwise procedure were used. The distance from t

Many options exist for surgical correction of hallux valgus and associated metatarsus primus varus deformities. First-ray realignment and stabilization are keys to successful deformity correction. This article presents a brief review of first-metatarsal osteotomies in the correction of hallux valgus or metatarsus primus varus and summarizes arguments for proximal osteotomy with soft tissue balancing.

This study was to analyze intrasubject radiographic progression of the hallux valgus deformity by comparing the mildly and severely affected sides in patients with bilateral asymmetric hallux valgus in the whole group as well as the metatarsus adductus and the nonmetatarsus adductus subgroups. A total of 186 patients with bilateral asymmetrical hallux valgus deformity with a difference of 5° or greater in the hallux valgus angle were included, and 11 radiographic measurements were analyzed. The radiographic differences between the mildly and severely affected sides were compared. Correlation b
