This article documents the outcome of treatment of intraosseous ganglia and simple bone cysts of the carpal bones by curettage and injectable calcium phosphate bone cement (CPC) grafting. The patients consisted of five men and three women. One had a cystic lesion in the scaphoid, one in the hamate, and five in the lunate. Curettage of the lesions was performed, and CPC was injected into the cavity. Five patients were diagnosed with a ganglion and three with a simple bone cyst. Among the five patients with wrist pain, the pain disappeared completely in four. Radiographs showed apparent partial

We dissected 393 wrists to evaluate the incidence and distribution of anatomic features, arthrosis, chondromalacia, and soft tissue lesions. The data were then analyzed for any statistically significant associations among the different variables. The most common (73%) lunate morphology had a separate medial facet on its distal surface for the hamate. The capitate had a separate facet for the fourth metacarpal in 86% of the wrists. Fourth metacarpals with a dorsal radial facet, either separate from or connected to the rest of the fourth metacarpal base, were the most common types of fourth meta

PURPOSE: Determining peak height velocity age (PHVA) is crucial for understanding child growth and development and preventing injuries. Previous studies have used anthropometric measurements or X-ray evaluation to predict the timing of PHV, whereas ultrasound provides a radiation-free and portable alternative. This study aimed to predict the years to PHV by assessing multiple secondary ossification centers using ultrasound.
METHODS: A total of 12 sites across eight bones were evaluated using ultrasound in 181 children aged 6-12 years between June and December 2019. Height data were tracked fr

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the features and prevalence of radiographic abnormalities of the wrist in children with Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) and to determine whether the presence of radiographic abnormalities in the wrist correlates with the severity of KBD.
DESIGN AND PATIENTS: Two hundred and eight posteroanterior radiographs of the right hand (including wrist) in children with KBD, ranging in age from 4 to 11 years (mean age 7.7 years), from endemic areas of China were reviewed. Carpal bony margins were evaluated for blurring, thinning, irregularity with and without sclerosis, interruption

Multiple metacarpal dislocations combined with carpal fracture - dislocations are rare injuries. We report a new combination of these injuries where fracture-dislocation of the base of the 1st metacarpal bone occurred simultaneously with a comminuted fracture of the trapezium, dislocation of the trapezoid and metacarpal joints (2nd to 5th) and an avulsion fracture of the hamate. This specific carpal injury has not been previously described and our description will contribute to understanding the mechanism of these complex injuries. The injury pattern in the case featured here was multifaceted

Hamate fractures are estimated to represent 1.7% of all carpal fractures and can occur at the hamulus (hook) or hamate body depending on mechanism of injury. Fractures of the hamate body can be exceedingly difficult to identify on standard wrist and hand radiographs in the emergency department. If the diagnosis is missed in the emergency department, orthopedic referral is often delayed. This can result in lasting functional disability for the patient, as these fractures have a propensity to destabilize the fourth and fifth carpometacarpal (CMC) joints. In this pictorial essay, we present six r

Intra-articular fracture dislocations of the base of the middle phalanx are complex and debilitating injuries that present a management conundrum when nonreconstructable. Hemi-hamate arthroplasty (HHA) is a treatment modality of particular use in the setting of highly comminuted fractures. This systematic review aims to summarize the reported outcomes of HHA in this context. A literature search was conducted using MEDLINE, Embase, and PubMed, yielding 22 studies with 235 patients for inclusion. The weighted mean postoperative range of movement at the proximal interphalangeal joint was 74.3° (r

Dogs are commonly kept as household pets, but sometimes pet dogs bite people. We report the case of a 69-year-old man who was bitten by his pet pit bull terrier. The dog bite resulted in multiple open wrist fractures and dislocation of the distal radioulnar joint, requiring surgical debridement, open reduction and internal fixation, and bone grafting. CT of the fractures showed that the dog's maxillary canine teeth had been deeply embedded in the hamate and second metacarpal bones, requiring that the dog's mouth be opened and the teeth disengaged in order to remove the injured limb from the do

Fractures of the carpal bones, excluding the scaphoid, are less common and are often missed on standard, plain radiographs. The diagnosis requires knowledge of the anatomy and common fracture patterns of the bones and the specialized radiographic views necessary to image them. Although the hamate hook, trapezial ridge, and pisiform often fracture from direct trauma, other fractures of the carpus may indicate more widespread injury and require a detailed evaluation to rule out associated perilunate or carpometacarpal fracture-subluxations. Fortunately, if treated appropriately, the vast majorit

Background Spontaneous flexor tendon rupture is considered to be invariably associated with previous hand/wrist injury or systemic disease such as rheumatoid arthritis. Case Description A 54-year-old man presented with a 4-month history of mild ulnar wrist pain and spontaneous left little finger flexion loss in the absence of distant/recent trauma and systemic arthropathy. Surgical exploration confirmed a zone IV left little finger flexor digitorum profundus (FDP5) attritional rupture (100%), ring finger flexor digitorum profundus (FDP4) attenuation (40%) and a disrupted lunotriquetral ligamen

PURPOSE: This anatomical study details and categorizes variations in capitate morphology and associated structures in the human cadaveric wrist.
METHODS: We dissected 107 cadaveric wrists. Capitate morphology, the presence of capitate and hamate ridges, the lunate types, and the width of the medial hamate facet of type II lunates and 4th carpometacarpal joint types were recorded.
RESULTS: Three types of capitate were identified. The flat type (69/107, or 65%) was characterized by a horizontally oriented (radio-ulnar) lunate-capitate articulation and a longitudinally oriented (proximal-distal

Complex, perilunate fracture-dislocations of the wrist comprise severe and challenging injuries, characterised by a total loss of contact between the lunate bone and the head of the capitate as well as fracture of one, or more bones surrounding lunate bone. The principle of treatment of such injuries involves stable fixation of fractures, anatomical reduction of the displaced carpal bones with temporary arthrodesis wit K-wires to maintain their position. We present a patient who sustained a complex, perilunate fracture-dislocation of the wrist with fractures of the scaphoid, hamate and base of

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to determine which wrist fractures are not prospectively diagnosed at radiography using CT as a gold standard and to identify specific fracture patterns.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Through a search of radiology records from January 1 to December 31, 2005, 103 consecutive patients were identified as having radiographic and CT examinations of the wrist. After excluding incomplete or nondiagnostic examinations and those with a greater than 6-week interval between imaging studies, the final study group consisted of 61 wrist examinations in 60 patients. Carpal coalition, the union of 2 or more carpal bones, can be congenital or acquired. Congenital, nonsyndromic carpal coalition usually presents in otherwise healthy individuals. The most common coalition is between the lunate and the triquetrum, followed by the capitate and the hamate. Pancarpal coalition, or coalition of all or most of the bones of the carpus, is an extremely rare finding and usually occurs as part of a syndrome. We present a nonsyndromic case of this rare entity, in a 28-year-old woman of West African descent, with symptoms of left hand and wrist pain. Our literature review

BACKGROUND: Hook of the hamate fractures can be managed conservatively or fixed using a screw, but excision is recommended for prompt return to activities. Although various approaches have been described, there is no gold standard. Herein, the authors have described their clinical experiences in excising the hook of the hamate using the carpal tunnel approach, in athletes.
METHODS: A total of 36 athletes underwent excision of the hamate hook using the carpal tunnel approach. The mean age of the patients was 23 years, and most of them were baseball players (n = 31).
RESULTS: The mean operatio

BACKGROUND: Hook of the hamate fractures are particularly rare carpal fractures with significant morbidity if not diagnosed early. Classically, these fractures occur from localized blunt trauma to the hook of the hamate in racket sports. Common complaints include pain localized in the hypothenar eminence and reduced grip strength. Hook of the hamate fractures have the potential to cause significant injury to the ulnar nerve and artery.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 43-year-old man with hypothenar pain, paresthesias of the fifth finger and ulnar aspect of the fourth finger, and pallor
