Recent studies have revealed that eccentric-only resistance exercise has the potential to acutely decrease passive stiffness of some biarticular hamstring muscles. The biarticular hamstring muscles are hip adductors and thus are greatly lengthened in the hip abducted position. Based on these findings, this study aimed to investigate whether eccentric-only resistance exercise in hip abducted positions, rather than in the hip-neutral position, induces a greater acute decrease in the passive stiffness of the biarticular hamstring muscles. Eleven participants performed eccentric-only knee flexions

AIM: Dominance of one leg may cause asymmetry between the contralateral muscle groups and develop predisposition for injury to the leg with the weaker muscle strength. The purpose of this study was to examine the strength balance in the extensor and flexor muscle groups, as well as the hamstring to quadriceps (H/Q) ratios of both legs in professional soccer players with dominance on one or both legs.
METHODS: Forty-two professional soccer players of the first Greek division participated in this study. Participants were divided into 3 groups according to their leg use during training sessions

The purpose of this study was to investigate the muscle-tendon unit (MTU) and fascicle behavior of the biceps femoris long head (BFlh) along with the activation during the swing phase of high-speed running. Nine active males ran on a treadmill at 70, 80, and 90 % of their maximum running speed. Kinematics of the hip and knee joints were collected during running. The fascicle length of the BFlh was monitored using a B-mode real-time ultrasound imaging system. Muscle activation of the BFlh was simultaneously recorded using surface electromyography. During the swing phase of running, the changes

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a Nordic hamstring exercise intervention on biceps femoris long head, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus muscle's activity and relative contributions through multichannel electromyography. Twenty-four injury-free male basketball players (mean age 20 [3] y) were randomly assigned to a 12-week intervention (n = 13) or control group (n = 11). The primary outcome measures were normalized muscle activity (percentage of maximal voluntary isometric contraction, %MVIC) and relative contribution of hamstring muscles over 12 weeks. No effects were fou

BACKGROUND: Hamstring strain is one of the most common among sports injuries. A previous history of this injury is considered a strong predictor of recurrent hamstring strain injury. It has been suggested that fascial tissue alters after muscle strain injury. However, the association between previous hamstring strain injury and tissue stiffness and vibration sense detection has not been investigated.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine whether a previous history of hamstring strain injury affects tissue stiffness and vibration sense in professional soccer players.
METHOD: The stiffness (Myoton

This study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to compare individual muscle use in exercises aimed at preventing hamstring injuries. Thirty-six professional soccer players were randomized into 4 groups, each performing either Nordic hamstring, flywheel leg curl, Russian belt or conic-pulley exercise. MRIs were performed before and immediately after a bout of 4 sets of 8 repetitions. Pre-post exercise differences in contrast shift (T2) were analyzed for the long (BFLh) and short head (BFSh) of biceps femoris, semitendinosus (ST), semimembranosus (SM) and gracilis (GR) muscles. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between the concentric hamstrings/quadriceps muscle strength (Hcon :Qcon ) and cross-sectional area ratios (Hcsa :Qcsa ) in professional soccer players with Hcon :Qcon imbalance. Nine male professional soccer players (25·3 ± 4·1 years) performed five maximal concentric contractions of the knee extensors (KE) and flexors (KF) at 60 s(-1) to assess Hcon :Qcon . The test was performed using the dominant (preferred kicking), and non-dominant limb with a 5-min recovery period was allowed between them. Only players with Hcon :Qcon < 0·60 (range:

Proximal hamstring injuries occur during eccentric contraction with the hip and the knee on extension; hence they are relatively frequent lesions in specific sports such as water skiing and hurdle jumping. Additionally, the trend toward increasing activity and fitness training in the general population has resulted in similar injuries. Myotendinous strains are more frequent than avulsion injuries. Discrimination between the two types of lesions is relevant for patient management, since the former is treated conservatively and the latter surgically. MRI and Ultrasonography are both well suited

OBJECTIVE: To determine if there is any decrease in playing performance of athletes following return to sport after recovery from hamstring muscle strain injury.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
PARTICIPANTS: One professional Australian football team over two playing seasons.
METHODS: For every game, the team coach rated player performance proportional to time spent on the ground playing (an integer score out of a maximum of 10). Player performance ratings were compared pre- and post-hamstring muscle strain injury to assess player performance upon return to sport.
RESULTS: Thirteen athlet

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the effect of hamstrings muscle action on stability of the anterior cruciate ligament deficient knee during isokinetic exercise at various speeds.
DESIGN: Mathematical modeling and forward-dynamics computer simulation were used to study the interactions between knee-extension speed, hamstrings co-contraction activity, and anterior tibial translation in the intact and anterior cruciate deficient knee.
BACKGROUND: There is much experimental evidence available to believe that hamstrings co-contraction can reduce anterior tibial translation in the anterior cruciate deficie

The hamstring muscles have been recognized as an important element in compensating for the loss of stability in the ACL-deficient knee, but it is still not clear whether the hamstring muscle force can completely compensate for the loss of ACL, and the consequences of increased hamstring muscle force. A two-dimensional anatomical knee model in the sagittal plane was developed to examine the effect of various levels of hamstring muscle activation on restraining anterior tibial translation in the ACL-deficient knee during level walking. The model included the tibiofemoral and patellofemoral joint

The purpose of this study was to measure the change in hamstring muscle thickness between contracting and relaxing conditions following a return to sports after a hamstring muscle strain and thereby evaluate muscle function. Six male track and field sprinters participated in this study. All had experienced a prior hamstring strain injury that required a minimum of 2 weeks away from sport participation. Transverse plane scans were performed at the following four points on the affected and unaffected sides under contracting and relaxing conditions: proximal biceps femoris long head, proximal sem

Why do some hamstring and quadriceps strains take much longer to repair than others? Which injuries are more prone to recurrence? Intramuscular tendon injuries have received little attention as an element in 'muscle strain'. In thigh muscles, such as rectus femoris and biceps femoris, the attached tendon extends for a significant distance within the muscle belly. While the pathology of most muscle injures occurs at a musculotendinous junction, at first glance the athlete appears to report pain within a muscle belly. In addition to the musculotendinous injury being a site of pathology, the intr

PURPOSE: Recent studies raise an interesting possibility that resistance exercise also decreases passive muscle stiffness, as does stretching exercise. However, little is known about how program variables of resistance exercise acutely influence muscle stiffness. We aimed to examine the acute changes in passive stiffness of the individual hamstring muscles after resistance exercises using different combinations of contraction modes and ranges of motion (ROMs).
METHODS: Thirteen healthy young male participants performed three sessions of resistance exercises that comprised stiff-leg deadlift w

The aim of this assessor-blind randomised controlled trial was to determine the effect of four weeks of 30 minute stretches each weekday on extensibility of the hamstring muscles in people with recent spinal cord injuries. A consecutive sample of 16 spinal cord-injured patients with no or minimal voluntary motor power in the lower limbs and insufficient hamstring muscle extensibility to enable optimal long sitting were recruited. Subjects' legs were randomly allocated to experimental and control conditions. The hamstring muscles of the experimental leg of each subject were stretched with a 30

BACKGROUND: Injuries of the proximal attachment of the hamstring muscles are common. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship of the proximal attachment of the hamstring muscles with neighboring structures comprehensively.
METHODS: A total of 97 hemipelvis from 66 cryopreserved specimens were evaluated via ultrasound, anatomical and histological samples.
RESULTS: The proximal attachment of the hamstring muscles presents a hyperechogenic line surrounding the origin of the semimembranosus and the long head of the biceps femoris muscles, as well as another hyperechogenic line cov

High-velocity eccentric training elicits exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), predominantly attributed to mechanical strain. However, the potential contribution of metabolic stress to muscle damage remains underexplored, especially in trained populations. This study examined whether metabolic changes contribute to EIMD during maximal eccentric hamstring curls. Thirty male participants performed five sets of 15 maximal eccentric leg curls at 210°/s. Muscle oxygenation (SmO₂) and pulmonary gas exchange (VO2 and VCO₂) were recorded during the intervention. Creatine kinase (CK), muscle soreness,
