Allergens in Medical Hand Skin Cleansers.

Health care workers may be at risk of occupational allergic contact dermatitis because of their frequent exposure to medical hand skin cleansers. We identified American Contact Dermatitis Society Core 80 Allergens found in medical hand skin cleansers (waterless skin soaps, water-needed skin soaps, and skin disinfectants) in the United States and developed a list of "low-allergen" medical hand skin cleansers. Waterless skin soaps most commonly contained fragrance, tocopherol, and sodium benzoate. Top allergens in water-needed skin soaps included fragrance, chloroxylenol, propylene glycol, and c

Hand eczema symptoms, exposures and skin care in orthodontics : A national, cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey.

OBJECTIVES: Occupational hand eczema is a common inflammatory skin condition among healthcare professionals. Orthodontists are frequently exposed to a variety of irritating and allergenic substances, and therefore they belong to a predisposed group to develop hand eczema. However, current data on the prevalence and predisposing factors among orthodontists to provide adequate prophylaxis are lacking. METHODS: An anonymous online survey was conducted in Germany between January and February 2023 and distributed to 2402 orthodontists. The questionnaire addressed general information on current ski

Contact Dermatitis from Hand Hygiene Practices in the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues to spread globally at a staggering speed. At present, there is no effective treatment or vaccine for COVID-19. Hand disinfection is a cost-effective way to prevent its transmission. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines, we should wash our hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, alcohol-based hand rubs (ABHRs) with at least 60% alcohol are the alternative. With diligent hand disinfection reinforced during COVID-19, there is an increased prevalenc

Comparative evaluation of five surgical hand scrub preparations.

Surgical hand scrubs should remove microorganisms from health care professionals' hands and forearms and maintain the lowest possible microbial counts during surgical procedures. This study evaluated the immediate, persistent, and residual efficacy of five surgical hand scrub products. The two chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) products achieved significant immediate reduction in the microorganism count and demonstrated persistent and residual efficacy. The iodophor product exhibited effective immediate and persistent antimicrobial properties but failed to show significant residual effects. The par

Microbial Keratitis Before, During and After the COVID-19 Pandemic, and the Role of Contact Lens Wear and Hand Hygiene.

INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a significant decline in the number of patients with both non-urgent and urgent ophthalmologic conditions presenting to emergency departments, leading to concerns about the whereabouts of patients in need of care. We hypothesized that there was an actual decrease in microbial keratitis (MK) cases, due to reduced contact lens (CL) wear and improved hand hygiene, including alcohol-based hand disinfection. Besides, we questioned if non-pharmaceutical interventions would have a sustained effect after the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Retrospecti

AI-optimized pulsed electric field for low-carbon urban water disinfection.

Urban water systems are critical hubs for the flow of carbon and materials in urban metabolism. Traditional disinfection methods, such as chlorination, face a dual challenge. On one hand, they rely on energy-intensive chemical production and transportation, resulting in significant indirect carbon emissions. On the other hand, they release disinfection by products that harm ecosystems and public health, which directly contradicts the "One Health" framework. To address these issues, we have developed a new disinfection platform centered around an AI-optimized pulsed electric field system. Using

[Prevention of infections in the ophthalmology office].

Transmission of infectious agents from a patient to the following one in the medical office may result from infected collyria, from contact to the cornea by infected instruments or simply by the hands of the medical staff if some rules of hygiene are not respected. The prevention comprises the instillation without contact of the collyria, the adequate disinfection of instruments and the frequent hand washing. The disinfection of the tonometers and contact glasses aims particularly the elimination of viruses. If the virus of herpes, hepatitis and acquired immunodeficiency are eliminated by hypo

Can intensive use of alcohol-based hand rubs lead to passive alcoholization?

Hand disinfection with alcohols-based hand rubs (ABHRs) are known to be the most effective measure to prevent nosocomial infections in healthcare. ABHRs contain on average 70% by weight of one or more alcohols. During the hand rubbing procedure, users are exposed to these alcohols not only through dermal contact, but also via inhalation, due to the physical and chemical properties of alcohols volatilizing from alcoholic solutions or gels into the air. Ethanol ingestion is well known to increase risks of several diseases (affecting the pancreas, liver, cardiovascular system…), but there is a la

[Two cases of anaphylactic shock induced by chlorhexidine].

We reported two patients who developed skin eruptions and severe hypotension immediately after scrubbing their wound in the leg using 4% chlorhexidine solution. Both patients were successfully treated by epinephrine administration. Patient-1 (a 42-year-old man) had his wound scrubbed using this antiseptic several times before the operation. He showed a positive skin scratch test for chlorhexidine. Patient-2 (a 74-year-old man) had no prior treatment with chlorhexidine. Positive lymphocyte transformation test was not demonstrated in these patients. It has been reported that more than 10% of pat

Efficacy of Enhanced Environmental Cleaning/Disinfection Using Pulsed Xenon Ultraviolet Light in Preventing Outbreaks of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In recent years, non-contact room disinfection devices using ultraviolet light and hydrogen peroxide have emerged as disinfection methods. However, data on their usefulness in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are limited. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of environmental disinfection in controlling methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) outbreaks in a NICU/growing care unit (GCU). METHODS: Daily cleaning/disinfection of the patient environment was changed from using a cloth containing quaternary ammonium salts to

Innovations in hand hygiene: Manugel from SSL International.

Hand hygiene is the single most effective method of preventing cross-infection. Barriers to performing effective hand hygiene include lack of time and the poor cosmetic acceptability of many of the available hand decontaminants. These problems are exacerbated in domiciliary nursing care where conditions in some homes may prevent adequate decontamination, especially when drying hands. Damp hands transfer bacteria more effectively than dry ones. The availability of newer alcoholic hand gels is helping to overcome these problems and the introduction of single-use sachets is of particular benefit

The effect of disinfecting procedure on the glucose concentration using a personal glucose meter.

BACKGROUND: Personal glucose meters, primarily designed for self-control of glucose concentration in patients with diabetes, are frequently used in clinical practice as point-of-care equipment. The procedure of washing hands with water and soap before testing, as recommended by the manufacturer of personal glucose meters, in hospital wards is often difficult to fulfil and is replaced by disinfecting the place of blood sampling with isopropyl alcohol. AIM: The purpose of the research was to evaluate the effect of different disinfecting procedures on glycemia measurement in capillary blood usin

Olfactory Cues and Patient Safety Behavior in Virtual Reality Medical Simulation: Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Simulation-based medical education is essential for improving patient safety. In virtual reality (VR)-based simulation, immersion is primarily generated through visual and auditory cues, while other sensory modalities are typically absent. This sensory limitation may reduce the emergence of authentic safety-relevant behaviors. Olfaction plays an important role in clinical reasoning, risk perception, and self-protective behavior and is closely linked to memory and emotion. Although olfactory cues have been shown to influence hand hygiene behavior in real or simulated environments, t

Effects of disinfectants and detergents on skin irritation.

We investigated the biological response of regular human skin to alcohol-based disinfectants and detergents in a repetitive test design. Using non-invasive diagnostic tools such as transepidermal water loss, laser-Doppler flowmetry and corneometry, we quantified the irritative effects of a propanol-based hand disinfectant (Sterillium), its propanol mixture (2-propanol 45% w/w and 1-propanol 30% w/w), sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) 0.5% and distilled water. The substances were applied in a 2-D patch test in a repetitive occlusive test design to the back. Additionally, we performed a wash test on t

Disinfection for prevention and control of infections on the threshold of the 21 century for the critically ill patient.

In infectious diseases we can discern a cause and effect chain, which in particular offers the practicable perspectives of prophylaxis and treatment. However, to date we have not been able to control them. Apart from new epidemics, such as those caused by HIV and SARS, long-forgotten scourges like TB are enjoying a comeback. Furthermore, the advances made in clinical medicine mean that induced immunosuppression, for instance as a result of major surgery or organ transplantation, has become a serious problem in intensive care units. The body's natural barriers are breached through medical inter

Acceptability of an alcohol-based handrub gel with superfatting agents among healthcare workers: a randomized crossover controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare workers often experience skin dryness and irritation from performing hand hygiene frequently. Low acceptability and tolerability of a formulation are barriers to hand hygiene compliance, though little research has been conducted on what specific types of formulation have higher acceptability than others. OBJECTIVE: To compare the acceptability and tolerability of an ethanol-based handrub gel with superfatting agents to the isopropanol-based formulations (a rub and a gel formulation) currently used by healthcare workers at the University of Geneva Hospitals, Geneva, Sw

Microbiological contamination of young children's hands in rural Bangladesh: Associations with child age and observed hand cleanliness as proxy.

BACKGROUND: Hands are a route of transmission for fecal-oral pathogens. This analysis aimed to assess associations between hand E. coli contamination and child age and determine if observed hand cleanliness can serve as a proxy for E. coli contamination on young children's hands. METHODS: Trained field workers collected hand rinse samples from children aged 1-14 months in 584 households in rural Bangladesh and assessed the visual cleanliness of child hands (fingernails, finger pads and palms). Samples were analyzed using the IDEXX most probable number (MPN) methodto enumerate E. coli. We asse

Survival of hepatitis A virus on human hands and its transfer on contact with animate and inanimate surfaces.

The survival of hepatitis A virus (HAV; strain HM175) on the hands of five volunteers was determined by depositing 10 microliters of fecally suspended virus on each fingerpad and eluting the inoculum after 0, 20, 60, 120, 180, and 240 min. The amount of virus recovered from each fingerpad at 0 min was approximately 6.0 x 10(4) PFU. At the end of 4 h, 16 to 30% of the initially recoverable virus remained detectable on the fingerpads. HAV inocula (10 microliters; approximately 1.0 x 10(4) PFU) placed on fingerpads or 1-cm-diameter metal disks were used to determine virus transfer to clean surfac
