Acute effects on heart rate variability when exposed to hand transmitted vibration and noise.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates possible acute effects on heart rate variability (HRV) when people are exposed to hand transmitted vibration and noise individually and simultaneously. METHODS: Ten male and 10 female subjects were recruited by advertisement. Subjects completed a questionnaire concerning their work environment, general health, medication, hearing, and physical activity level. The test started with the subject resting for 15 min while sitting down. After resting, they were exposed to one of four exposure conditions: (1) only vibration; (2) only noise; (3) both noise and vibr

Vibration dose and carpal tunnel syndrome in sandstone quarry workers: A cross-sectional study from Thailand.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is common in vibration-exposed occupations, but evidence from informal sandstone workers is limited. This cross-sectional study examined hand-wrist symptoms and the association between cumulative hand-arm vibration exposure and CTS severity among 92 sandstone workers. Data were collected through structured interviews and ergonomic observation, and CTS severity was assessed using the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire-Symptom Severity Scale (BCTQ-SSS). CTS (mild or greater severity) was observed in 58.7% of workers. Compared with the lowest exposure quartile (Q1), w

A roadmap for assessing the diagnostic usefulness of neurosensory testing and an updated method for exposure assessment among vibration-exposed workers in northern Sweden.

Workers who use handheld vibrating machines such as grinders, hammers and chainsaws expose themselves to hand-arm vibration (HAV). Exposure to HAV may cause injuries to both the neurological and the vascular system. The occupational health services (OHS) in Sweden use a formal guideline for secondary prevention focusing on early detection of vibration-related injuries. The guide includes several screening tools, such as a screening questionnaire, clinical examinations, and laboratory tests. There are no studies, to our knowledge, on the diagnostic value of the separate items on symptoms in the

Hand-arm vibration in tropical rain forestry workers.

Working conditions and health hazards including vibration syndrome related to forestry work using chain-saws were studied in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. The subjects comprised 291 workers including 97 chain-saw operators. The health examination consisted of peripheral circulatory and sensory tests in the upper extremities. The vibration spectrum measured at the handle of the chain-saw indicated that these acceleration levels would lead to a moderately high risk of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). The peripheral circulatory function tests revealed dysfunction after more than five years v

Hand-arm vibration and the risk of vascular and neurological diseases-A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Increased occurrence of Raynaud's phenomenon, neurosensory injury and carpal tunnel syndrome has been reported for more than 100 years in association with work with vibrating machines. The current risk prediction modelling (ISO-5349) for "Raynaud's phenomenon" is based on a few studies published 70 to 40 years ago. There are no corresponding risk prediction models for neurosensory injury or carpal tunnel syndrome, nor any systematic reviews comprising a statistical synthesis (meta-analysis) of the evidence. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to provide a systematic review of the literature o

Simulation of mechanical responses of fingertip to dynamic loading.

Extended exposure to mechanical vibration has been related to many vascular, sensorineural and musculoskeletal disorders of the hand-arm system, frequently termed 'hand-arm vibration syndrome' (HAVS). A two-dimensional, nonlinear finite element model of a fingertip is developed to study the stress and strain fields of the soft tissue under dynamic loading, that may be encountered while grasping and operating a hand-held power tool. The model incorporates the most essential anatomical elements of a fingertip, such as soft tissue, bone, and nail. The finger is assumed to be in contact with a ste

Hand-Arm Vibration Exposures in Male Drummers: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) is associated with the development of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), one of the most frequently reported playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs) in drummers (i.e., percussionists who play the drum kit). Moderate levels of HAV exposure were previously reported for short durations of drumming (i.e., 3 minutes), but investigating HAV exposure under more realistic playing conditions is warranted. In this cross-sectional study, a triaxial accelerometer recorded HAV exposures while participants played three songs of their choosing (mean set duration: 12

Raynaud's phenomenon of occupational origin.

Vibration delivered to the hand and arm by industrial pneumatic tools is a common cause of vascular and neurovascular problems, including cold-induced vascular spasm (vibration white finger) and peripheral neuropathies with paresthesias, dysesthesias, and sensory abnormalities. A decade ago, the US Public Health Service estimated that 1.2 million American workers were at risk. Differentiation of primary and secondary Raynaud's phenomenon from the thoracic outlet syndrome and from the carpal tunnel syndrome pose potential diagnostic difficulties. Despite growing public recognition of upper extr

[Biomechanical overload diseases: epidemiologic data].

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are a major problem for industrialised societies, particularly in view of the elevated prevalence of low back pain (LBP) and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) among manual workers. Epidemiological studies show that work-related risk factors, such as lifting, twisting, bending, exposure to whole body vibration, and prolonged postures are prominent risk factors for LBP. For CTS, repetitive movements, hand-arm vibrations and use of forceful hand movements appear to be the major work-related risk factors. Psychological and psychosocial factors can also affect the

Contact area affects frequency-dependent responses to vibration in the peripheral vascular and sensorineural systems.

Repetitive exposure to hand-transmitted vibration is associated with development of peripheral vascular and sensorineural dysfunctions. These disorders and symptoms associated with it are referred to as hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Although the symptoms of the disorder have been well characterized, the etiology and contribution of various exposure factors to development of the dysfunctions are not well understood. Previous studies performed using a rat-tail model of vibration demonstrated that vascular and peripheral nervous system adverse effects of vibration are frequency-dependent, w

Thermal perception thresholds among young adults exposed to hand-transmitted vibration.

INTRODUCTION: Quantitative sensory testing assesses non-invasively the function of the sensory pathways from receptors to cortex. Studies of workers exposed to vibration support evidence that neuro-sensory hand-arm vibration syndrome also encompasses neuropathy of the small-diameter nerve fibres. OBJECTIVES: To assess the risk of disturbed thermal perception developing among young adults exposed to vibration and hand-intensive manual work. The aim also encompasses the study of alternative covariates in small-diameter nerve fibre neuropathy assessment. METHODS: This cross-sectional multi-cent

Sensory and autonomic function in the hands of patients with non-specific arm pain (NSAP) and asymptomatic office workers.

Chronic pain in the upper limb associated with repetitive movements of the arm and hand is often seen in patients in the absence of specific pathology such as epicondylitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and tenosynovitis. This condition has been given many names and will be referred to here as non-specific arm pain (NSAP). Previous work has shown elevated vibration thresholds and reduced flare suggesting a neuropathic cause for this condition. In order to examine this further the present study has assessed functions that involve both large sensory nerve fibres (vibration) and small dorsal root fibre

Analysis of skin deformation profiles during sinusoidal vibration of fingerpad.

Vibrotactile perception threshold measurement has been widely used to diagnose the severity of peripheral neuropathy associated with hand-arm vibration syndrome and sensory losses in stroke and diabetic patients. The vibration perception threshold is believed to be influenced by many factors, such as contact force and vibration frequency. The present study is intended to analyze, theoretically, the time-dependent deformation profile of skin surface, strain distributions within soft tissue, and response force of a fingertip when it is stimulated by a probe vibrating with a sinusoidal movement.

Is Dupuytren's disease an occupational illness?

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence for the risk of Dupuytren's disease (DD) from occupational exposure. For workers exposed to hand-transmitted vibrations (HTVs) and heavy manual work (HMW) who develop the disease, the inclusion of DD in hand-arm vibration syndrome and diseases of skeletal muscle overload could be beneficial for compensation purposes. AIMS: To assess the risk of DD in workers exposed to HTVs and HMW, and to evaluate the length of exposure times that may significantly affect the development of DD. METHODS: This study included male workers in Košice, Slovak Republic. Partic
