A Case Report on Dysgraphia in a Patient Receiving Blinatumomab: Complex Characters Are Easy to Find in a Handwriting Test.

Recent advances in chemotherapy have led to the emergence of new types of anticancer agents. With these advances, cases of side effects that have not been witnessed in the past have emerged. The systems of side effect evaluation and their grading have been based on the existing knowledge, such as the CTCAE (Common Terminology Standard for Adverse Events) for evaluating adverse drug reactions in cancer chemotherapy clinical trials. Therefore, new types of side effects may be overlooked or underestimated. Blinatumomab is a bispecific T-cell-engager (BiTE) antibody with specificity for CD19 on B

Dystonia-Ataxia with early handwriting deterioration in COQ8A mutation carriers: A case series and literature review.

Cerebellar ataxia is a hallmark of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) deficiency associated with COQ8A mutations. We present four patients, one with novel COQ8A pathogenic variants all with early, prominent handwriting impairment, dystonia and only mild ataxia. To better define the phenotypic spectrum and course of COQ8A disease, we review the clinical presentation and evolution in 47 reported cases. Individuals with COQ8A mutation display great clinical variability and unpredictable responses to CoQ10 supplementation. Onset is typically during infancy or childhood with ataxic features associated with devel

The Effect of Handwriting Training on Language Learning Among Deaf Children and Their Matched Hearing Peers in China.

Comparing deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children with their hearing peers in learning Chinese, the study tested the lexical quality hypothesis (Perfetti, 1992, 2007), which asserts the importance of building orthographic, phonological, and semantic connections in high-quality lexical representations. DHH children and hearing peers matched on reading age were randomly assigned to one of two groups: One received writing training on both Day 1 and Day 2; the other received pinyin typing training on Day 1 and writing training on Day 2. Compared with younger hearing controls, DHH children showed e

Advantage of Handwriting Over Typing on Learning Words: Evidence From an N400 Event-Related Potential Index.

The growing implementation of digital education comes with an increased need to understand the impact of digital tools on learning. Previous behavioral studies have shown that handwriting on paper is more effective for learning than typing on a keyboard. However, the impact of writing with a digital pen on a tablet remains to be clarified. In the present study, we compared learning by handwriting with an ink pen on paper, handwriting with a digital pen on a tablet, and typing on a keyboard. Behavioral and electroencephalographic indices were measured immediately after learning with each writin

Handwriting difficulties in children with dyslexia: Poorer legibility in dictation and alphabet tasks, slowness in the alphabet task.

Several studies have shown that children with dyslexia (DYS), in addition to their reading and spelling deficits, encounter handwriting difficulties that are still poorly understood in terms of their nature and origin. The present study aimed to better understand the handwriting difficulties of children with DYS by comparing their handwriting quality and speed in two tasks, a dictation task and an alphabet task, which required fewer spelling skills than the dictation task. Twenty-nine French-speaking children (Mage = 9.5 years) participated in the study, including 18 children with DYS and nine

Analysis of Fine Motor Skills in Essential Tremor: Combining Neuroimaging and Handwriting Biomarkers for Early Management.

Essential tremor (ET) is a highly prevalent neurological disorder characterized by action-induced tremors involving the hand, voice, head, and/or face. Importantly, hand tremor is present in nearly all forms of ET, resulting in impaired fine motor skills and diminished quality of life. To advance early diagnostic approaches for ET, automated handwriting tasks and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offer an opportunity to develop early essential clinical biomarkers. In this study, we present a novel approach for the early clinical diagnosis and monitoring of ET based on integrating handwriting an

Analysis and evaluation of handwriting in patients with Parkinson's disease using kinematic, geometrical, and non-linear features.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Parkinson's disease is a neurological disorder that affects the motor system producing lack of coordination, resting tremor, and rigidity. Impairments in handwriting are among the main symptoms of the disease. Handwriting analysis can help in supporting the diagnosis and in monitoring the progress of the disease. This paper aims to evaluate the importance of different groups of features to model handwriting deficits that appear due to Parkinson's disease; and how those features are able to discriminate between Parkinson's disease patients and healthy subjects. Sim-to-Real Domain Adaptation for Early Alzheimer's Detection from Handwriting Kinematics Using Hybrid Deep Learning.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive and motor decline. Early detection remains challenging, as traditional neuroimaging and neuropsychological assessments often fail to capture subtle, preclinical changes. Recent advances in digital health and artificial intelligence (AI) offer new opportunities to identify non-invasive biomarkers of cognitive impairment. In this study, we propose an AI-driven framework for early AD based on handwriting motion data captured using a sensor-integrated Smart Pen. The system employs an inertial measuremen

A Multimodal Convolutional Neural Network Model for Parkinson's Disease Diagnosis Based on Fused Handwriting Dynamics Signals.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a prevalent and complex neurodegenerative disorder, with early diagnosis playing a critical role in timely treatment and management. Handwriting dynamics has emerged as a promising biomarker for early detection of PD, yet current diagnostic methods often lack precision and robustness. This study introduces a novel multimodal deep learning-based decision support system to enhance PD diagnosis. Our approach leverages static and dynamic features of handwriting data by combining images of handwritten drawings with fused time-frequency representations of grip pressure, a

Hybrid Transformer for Early Alzheimer's Detection: Integration of Handwriting-Based 2D Images and 1D Signal Features.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative condition where early detection is vital. Handwriting, often affected early in AD, offers a non-invasive and cost-effective way to capture subtle motor changes. State-of-the-art research on handwriting, mostly online, based AD detection has predominantly relied on manually extracted features, fed as input to shallow machine learning models. Some recent works have proposed deep learning (DL)-based models, either 1D-CNN or 2D-CNN architectures, with performance comparing favorably to handcrafted schemes. These approaches, however, overloo

From Online Handwriting to Synthetic Images for Alzheimer's Disease Detection Using a Deep Transfer Learning Approach.

Early diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD), is very important to reduce their effects and to improve both quality and life expectancy of patients. In this context, it is generally agreed that handwriting is one of the first skills altered by the onset of AD. For this reason, the analysis of handwriting and the study of its alterations has become of great interest in order to formulate the diagnosis as soon as possible. A fundamental aspect for the use of these techniques is the definition of effective features, which allows the system to distinguish the na

Cutting-edge transformer-based deep learning for Parkinson's disease diagnosing using multimodal hand-drawing and handwriting analysis.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a significant mental health condition, and patients greatly benefit from prompt diagnosis and treatment if the disease is identified early. One powerful method for diagnosing PD at an early stage is the analysis of hand-drawing and handwriting samples from individuals with PD. The novelty of this research lies in developing a handwriting and hand-drawing Parkinson's Disease (HwdPD) framework for detecting PD. This framework utilizes hand-drawing and Arabic handwriting samples, which have been observed to be effective in detecting PD. Based on VGG19 and transformer,

Visual language and handwriting movement: functional magnetic resonance imaging at 3 tesla during generation of ideographic characters.

A functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment at 3 tesla was performed to investigate the collaborative mechanism between visuospatial processing and motor execution in performing visual language generation tasks. Japanese Kanji, ideographic characters, were utilized to design tasks. The bilateral border portions between the inferior parietal lobule and the occipital lobe were involved during a Kanji puzzle task, which required subjects to combine several parts into a Kanji. The higher motor areas, such as the premotor areas and the pre-supplementary motor areas, were also activated bilat

Parents' perspectives on a collaborative approach to the application of the Handwriting Without Tears(®) programme with children with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The active involvement of parents and children in goal setting and intervention is integral to contemporary occupational therapy process models. However, parental perspectives on collaborative handwriting intervention are limited. This paper presents parental perspectives on a three-way collaboration involving teachers, parents and an occupational therapist in the application of Handwriting Without Tears(®) (HWT(®) ) with children with Down syndrome. METHODS: Within a larger mixed methods study, 44 parents completed purpose-designed questionnaires and six parents participated in a

Reliability-Guided Dynamic Fusion for Few-Shot Writer-Specific Stroke-Width Estimation in Offline Handwriting Biometric Sensing.

Offline handwriting functions as a practical biometric sensing modality for identity verification and controlled stress testing of recognition pipelines, yet recovering writer-specific stroke appearance from only a few enrollment samples remains difficult. In trajectory-based rendering used to probe such sensing systems, stroke width is often fixed or only weakly adapted, so the sensed thickness cue fails to reflect individual writing habits. The key obstacle is an operational reliability imbalance: a learned width estimator and handcrafted geometric priors disagree in trustworthiness across w

Kinematic handwriting impairments in olfactory dysfunction-related post-acute covid syndrome: short and long-term neurophysiological considerations.

BACKGROUND: Post-Acute COVID-19 Syndrome (PACS) frequently includes persistent olfactory dysfunction (OD) and may share neurocognitive features with Alzheimer's disease (AD). While fine motor impairments in handwriting are established in AD, they have not been systematically investigated in PACS. METHODS: In this prospective-retrospective study, handwriting kinematics from 30 patients with OD-related PACS were compared with those of 30 healthy participants (HP) matched for age, sex, and education. Tasks were performed on a digital tablet which automatically extracted kinematic parameters incl

Amplitude Manipulation Evokes Upper Limb Freezing during Handwriting in Patients with Parkinson's Disease with Freezing of Gait.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies show that besides freezing of gait (FOG), many people with Parkinson's disease (PD) also suffer from freezing in the upper limbs (FOUL). Up to now, it is unclear which task constraints provoke and explain upper limb freezing. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether upper limb freezing and other kinematic abnormalities during writing are provoked by (i) gradual changes in amplitude or by (ii) sustained amplitude generation in patients with and without freezing of gait. METHODS: Thirty-four patients with PD, including 17 with and 17 without FOG, performed a writing task on
