UNLABELLED: The role of vitamin D (VD) in the etiopathogenesis of autoimmune diseases (AI) is extensively studied. However, its association with autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) is still controversial. AIM of this study was to assess the relationship between the vitamin D status and thyroid autoimmunity in Slovak premenopausal women with newly diagnosed AITD.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This prospective case-control study included 57 women with AITD and 41 age- and BMI-matched controls. All subjects were examined for summer and winter serum 25(OH)D, thyroid autoantibodies (a-TPO, a-TG), freeT4 and

The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genomic region spanning about 4 Mb is the most gene dense and the polymorphic stretches in the human genome. A total of the 269 loci were identified, including 145 protein coding genes mostly important for immunity and 50 noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs). Biological function of these ncRNAs remains unknown, becoming hot spot in the studies of HLA-associated diseases. The genomic diversity analysis in the HLA region facilitated by next-generation sequencing will pave the way to molecular understanding of linkage disequilibrium structure, population diversity, histocompa

Morphological femininity depends mainly on estrogen levels at puberty and is perceived as a cue of a woman's biological condition. Due to the immunostimulant properties of estradiol, estradiol-dependent feminine traits are expected to be positively related to immunity. However, heightened immunity in women may increase the risk of autoimmune disease, thus the relationship between femininity and immune quality may be complex. This study aimed to assess the relationship between morphological femininity and both the occurrence and severity of Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) in women of reproductive ag

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder characterized by the destruction of thyroid cells through immune-mediated mechanisms involving cells and antibodies. The condition can trigger disturbances in metabolism, leading to the development of other autoimmune diseases, known as concomitant diseases. Multiple concomitant diseases may coexist in a single individual, making it challenging to diagnose and manage them effectively. This study aims to propose a novel hybrid algorithm that classifies concomitant diseases associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis based on sequences. The approach

The popularization of the gluten-free diet brings with it a fashion for its use, which can harm the treatment of Hashimoto's disease. The few studies in this regard do not confirm positive changes resulting from a gluten-free diet. At the same time, the presence of other comorbid autoimmune diseases in this group of patients is increasing. This may have important implications for the interpretation of test results and the need for a gluten-free diet in some patients. In this review, the PubMed database was searched for links between a gluten-free diet, Hashimoto's disease, and autoimmune disea

To explore the role of gut microbiota in Graves' disease (GD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). Seventy fecal samples were collected, including 27 patients with GD, 27 with HT, and 16 samples from healthy volunteers. Chemiluminescence was used to detect thyroid function and autoantibodies (FT3, FT4, TSH, TRAb, TGAb, and TPOAb); thyroid ultrasound and 16S sequencing were used to analyze the bacteria in fecal samples; KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) and COG (Clusters of Orthologous Groups) were used to analyze the functional prediction and pathogenesis. Erythema elevatum diutinum (EED) is a cutaneous vasculitis that is characterized by histopathologic findings of neutrophilic infiltration, vessel fibrosis, and leukocytoclasia. It most often presents as papules, plaques, and nodules on the extensor surfaces of the extremities. Herein, we present a case of a 44-year-old woman with Hashimoto's disease with an atypical presentation of EED on the palmar surface of the thumb, in addition to the classic appearance on the elbow. Diseases associated with EED, including autoimmune conditions, are discussed.

Human thyroid peroxidase (TPO), is an important enzyme responsible for the biosynthesis of thyroid hormones and is a major autoantigen in autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs) such as the destructive Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Although the structure of TPO has yet to be determined, its extracellular domain consists of three regions that exhibit a high degree of sequence similarity to domains of known three-dimensional structure: the myeloperoxidase (MPO)-like domain, complement control protein (CCP)-like domain, and epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like domain. Homology models of TPO can therefore be

OBJECTIVE: Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis are the most common causes of hyper and hypothyroidism, respectively. Differentiation of these 2 diseases, if the patient is euthyroid, may sometimes be extremely difficult on the basis of clinical and laboratory findings. The purpose of this study was to determine the sensitivity and specificity of gray scale sonography in differentiation of Graves' disease from Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
METHODS: This study included 149 patients divided into three groups, patients with Graves' disease (34 patients, mean age = 36.8 ± 10.17 years), Patients

Genome-wide association studies have led to the discovery of several susceptibility genes related to autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs). However, controversial results have been reported regarding the role of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of CD40 in the disease susceptibility. The objective of this study was to identify the relationship of the polymorphisms of three sites of CD40 with the susceptibility to AITD in the Chinese population. We genotyped three polymorphisms of CD40: C/T -1 SNP, 58038T site of the third exon and C64610G site of the ninth exon in 196 GD cases, 121 HT cases a

A middle-aged Hispanic woman presented to the emergency department (ED) reporting of acute new onset pressure-like chest pain developed at rest. It was radiated to the right arm and associated with malaise. Initial ECG demonstrated T-wave inversions (TWIs) in all anterior and lateral leads. Electrolytes, serial cardiac troponin and D-dimer were all normal. Comprehensive transthoracic echocardiogram and nuclear stress test did not reveal a cardiac cause of her symptoms.Serum thyroid-stimulating hormone was markedly elevated (207 mIU/L) and free thyroxine was low (FT4 0.07 ng/dL), consistent wit

Hashitoxicosis is generally differentiated from Graves' hyperthyroidism by its shorter course and absence of ophthalmopathy. In this case report, we describe an adolescent girl who presented with significant clinical findings of hyperthyroidism, a diffuse goiter with homogenously increased uptake in scintigraphy, and with ocular findings of ophthalmopathy. The thyroid stimulating hormone receptor antibody test was positive, and the family history revealed thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy. Clinical findings supported the diagnosis of Hashimoto's disease (HD) in the follow-up period. Radioactiv

AIM: To define the association between Hashimoto's thyroiditis and coeliac disease in Dutch patients.
METHODS: A total of 104 consecutive patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis underwent coeliac serological tests (antigliadins, transglutaminase and endomysium antibodies) and HLA-DQ typing. Small intestinal biopsy was performed when any of coeliac serological tests was positive. On the other hand, 184 patients with coeliac disease were subjected to thyroid biochemical (thyroid stimulating hormone and free thyroxine) and thyroid serological tests (thyroglobulin and thyroid peroxidase antibodies)

A 69-year-old man was referred for elevated thyroid hormone levels. He had no symptoms apart from mild hyperhidrosis and heat intolerance with occasional headaches. Past medical history included a right hemithyroidectomy for a multinodular goiter and Hashimoto's disease. At presentation the patient had a firm, slightly enlarged left thyroid lobe. There were no visual abnormalities, and the rest of the physical findings were unremarkable. Laboratory findings included elevated values of free T4, free T3, total T3, thyrotropin-secreting hormone (TSH), antithyroglobulin, and antimicrosomal antibod

We have tried to characterize the thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb) involved in Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease by studying their affinity constants and binding capacities. Two populations of antibodies were found in half of the patients with either disease, TgAb(1) with a high affinity (K(1)) but a low binding capacity (B(1)) and TgAb(2) with a lower affinity (K(2)) but a much higher binding capacity (B(2)). The mean affinity constants and binding capacities were similar in the two diseases. In the other half of the patients only one population of antibody was present, with a low af

The association of Hashimoto thyroiditis and Graves' disease with papillary, follicular, and medullary thyroid cancer has not been comprehensively investigated until now. This comparative clinicopathological study of consecutive patients thyroidectomized at a surgical referral center aimed to explore interdependencies between chronic autoimmune thyroiditis and thyroid cancer. Altogether, there were 852 (58.4%) patients with papillary thyroid cancer, 181 (12.4%) patients with follicular thyroid cancer, and 426 (29.2%) patients with sporadic medullary thyroid cancer, of whom 75 (5.1%) patients a

BACKGROUND: Hashimoto disease is a chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. Despite adequate hormone substitution, some patients have persistent symptoms that may be the result of immunologic pathophysiology.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether thyroidectomy improves symptoms in patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis who still have symptoms despite having normal thyroid gland function while receiving medical therapy.
DESIGN: Randomized trial. (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02319538).
SETTING: Secondary care hospital in Norway.
PATIENTS: 150 patients aged 18 to 79 years with persistent Hashimoto-related symptoms
