[On Sylvia Plath's Personality].

In this early study, written in 1985, I examined six of the most important personality traits of Sylvia Plath, the poet and writer (1). Sylvia oscillated between positions of dependency and independence; she was characterised by sexual inhibition and promiscuity, writer's block and an explosion of writing, achievement con- straint and liberation from the constraint, emotional dependence and independence. Paradoxically, she committed suicide when far more things (children, productive creative period, publication of her novel) tied her to life than was the case before her first suicide attempt (

[Eponyms in musculoskeletal radiology: stories of bones, persons, and civilizations].

Eponyms reflect the history of medicine, of disease, and of physicians, but eponyms also reflect the history of the societies in which these physicians lived. Both loved and hated, eponyms are at the center of an interminable debate about whether they should continue to be used or whether they should disappear, and this debate has become more intense since some scientific societies have purged their terminologies of eponyms related to Nazism. Eponyms abound in conventional musculoskeletal radiology. In this article, rather than attempt an exhaustive review of all these eponyms, we take a few r

Polygenic scores for empathy associate with posttraumatic stress severity in response to certain traumatic events.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is triggered by environmental stressors. Empathy may predispose an individual to respond to life events differently if high empathizers are emotionally more sensitive to trauma. For the first time, we test this hypothesis using genetic information. METHODS: We applied polygenic scoring (PGS) to investigate the shared genetics linking empathy (measured using the Empathy Quotient (EQ), a self-report measure of empathy; N = 46,861) and PTSD symptom severity (measured using the 6-item PTSD Checklist 6-item (PCL-6)) in the UK Biobank (N = 126,219).

Attitudes towards homosexuals in seven Caribbean countries: implications for an effective HIV response.

Between 2000 and 2015, the number of people newly infected with HIV in the Caribbean decreased by 76% and HIV-related deaths by 42%. The number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) on anti-retroviral therapy (ART) increased from near zero to 50% (44% to 57%) in 2015. In many Caribbean countries communities of men-who-have-sex-with-other-men (MSM) have higher incidence and prevalence of HIV. They are often stigmatized and subjected to both social and institutional discrimination. This study compared attitudes of the general public obtained through public opinion polls 2013-2014 towards homosexuals

Issues of diagnosis and care for the transgender patient: is the DSM-5 on point?

The experience of individuals who happen to be transgender is one that reflects a complex constellation of powerful influences both within and outside of the health care system in the United States. Profound stigma, prejudice, misunderstanding, and hate for these individuals are just a few examples of the formidable challenges that potently shape their lives. The combination of exposed vulnerabilities in the expression of their true selves, and the often hostile environment where this transformation occurs creates the perfect storm for the onset of serious psychiatric illnesses. Oddly enough,

Capgras: case study and reappraisal of psychopathology.

A case of the Capras phenomenon in a man of 58, arising during the course of a depressive illness, is described. Physical, electroencephalographic and psychometric investigations gave no sign of organic disease, and recovery was complete. Factors leading to the development of a depressive psychosis and its particular manifestation in the Capgras delusion are traced in detail. The psychopathology of the condition and the implications for treatment are discussed.

Mass Shootings in Public Places: Continuities and Complexities.

This study examined 71 mass shootings carried out by a single individual who opened fire on random victims in a public setting. Findings indicate that the (all-male) shooters commonly showed signs of anger, isolation, and marginalization. Many were motivated by a perceived grievance. However, among the sizeable group of young White men, extremist, hate-based ideologies often served as motivations. While very few of the shooters had been formally diagnosed, a number had shown signs of mental illness or suicidal tendencies, and close to 30% committed suicide following their attacks. The shooters

Aggression, trauma, and hatred in the treatment of borderline patients.

This article focuses on the etiology of aggressive affect, behavior, and fantasy in the treatment of patients with severe personality disorders in an effort to further our understanding of the psychopathology and treatment of these patients. In the process, the relationship between inborn disposition to aggressive behavior and the effect of severe trauma and psychosocial pathology in early childhood are examined. Various types of transferences marked by aggression and specific approaches to each of these are outlined. Particular reference is given to the management of intense hatred--as a deri

"We can make an impact": A mixed method examination of Asian American parents' and adolescents' bidirectional racial-civic socialization.

Little is known about Asian American family processes that support adolescents' civic engagement, especially in the context of anti-Asian racism. This convergent mixed-method explanatory study examined bidirectional racial-civic socialization (RCS) between Asian American parent-adolescent dyads around racial discrimination and how RCS relates to adolescents' civic engagement. Using observations of 78 Asian American parent-adolescent dyads discussing anti-Asian hate, exploratory qualitative analyses identified how critical consciousness is intertwined in bidirectional RCS. In surveys with 449 d

Childhood abuse, dissociation and hypnosis: Trauma-related transference.

This article presents how to apply psychodynamic theory of transference in the treatment of traumatized patients who have endured repeated early life trauma and a lack of relational safety. To make hypnosis safe, the author adapts her interventions to each patient's unique needs. Clinically relevant and experientially informed perspectives are provided, designed to support therapists in maintaining a safe hypnotic approach when patients relate to the therapist with negative transference, such as anger, hate, fear and distrust. In contrast to the popular focus on techniques, goals and treatment

[Johann Lucas Schönlein (1793-1864), a researcher and clinician].

From 1833 to 1840, Johann Lucas Schönlein, a native of Bamberg, Germany, was Professor of Internal Medicine at the newly created University of Zurich, Switzerland. His career and professional personality are described succintly in this paper. Schönlein was a most successful clinical teacher. He was the first German professor to teach at Würzburg, 1819-1832) clinical percussion and auscultation. On the other hand, he obviously hated writing and publishing. His 3 important discoveries, all made during his years in Zurich, were published on a total of 3 printed pages: so-called typhoid crystals i

Jérôme Lejeune (1926-1994): A Pioneer in Uncovering the Connection Between Congenital Conditions and Chromosomal Anomalies.

Jérôme Lejeune was a French physician and geneticist whose crucial contribution to the field of medicine was the discovery of an extra copy of chromosome 21 in those presenting with a range of physical and developmental anomalies known as Down syndrome. From this discovery on, the condition had a new name (trisomy 21) and a specific scientific explanation that left no room for discrimination against those affected and their parents. Lejeune promoted the idea that a medical doctor should hate the condition and love the patient: while working to find a cure for trisomy 21, Lejeune was also able

Violence experience among cis-gender women living with HIV in Atlanta, Georgia: impact on HIV-related health and their preferences for violence screening and support.

INTRODUCTION: People living with HIV (PLWH) experience multiple forms of violence at higher rates than the general population; however, research on experiences of violence among cis-gender women living with HIV (CWLH) mainly focuses on intimate partner violence (IPV), with inconsistent documentation across the literature. To begin improving trauma-informed practices in HIV care, we examined experiences of IPV, non-partner violence (NPV), hate crimes, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among CWLH. We then explored experiences and preferences regarding violence screening and support servic

Helicobacter pylori and gastroesophageal reflux disease: friends or foes?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is responsible for a high proportion of digestive symptoms attributable to the upper gastrointestinal tract. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is the main etiologic factor in chronic gastritis and gastroduodenal ulcer disease, but its relation with GERD has not yet been established. The aim of this paper is to review the relationship between H. pylori and GERD, trying to answer the question whether a nexus of "friendship" or "hate" exists between them. Although H. pylori may, in theory, represent a cause for GERD, available data suggest that the infection i
