Intracranial pressure changes in craniosynostotic rabbits.

Cranial vault and brain deformities in individuals with craniosynostosis are thought to result, in part, from changes in intracranial pressure, but clinical findings are still inconclusive. The present study describes intracranial pressure changes in a rabbit model with naturally occurring, uncorrected coronal suture synostosis. Longitudinal and cross-sectional intracranial pressure data were collected from 241 New Zealand White rabbits, divided into four groups: normal controls (n = 81); rabbits with delayed-onset coronal suture synostosis (n = 78); rabbits with early-onset unilateral coronal

[Postoperative otorrhagia: an unknown complication of Trendelenburg position during laparoscopic surgery?].

Two patients have presented postoperative otorrhagia following gynaecologic laparoscopic procedures. This occurred after uneventful anaesthesia and recovery for surgery performed in forced Trendelenburg position (35 degrees with horizontal position). Different responsible mechanisms are discussed including haemodynamic changes induced by both the Trendelenburg position and the pneumoperitoneum. Particularities of external ear blood supply directly submitted to arterial and venous pressure changes, may also have contributed to the appearance of otorrhagia.

Optogenetic inhibition of Purkinje cell activity reveals cerebellar control of blood pressure during postural alterations in anesthetized rats.

The cerebellar uvula (lobule IX), a part of the vestibulocerebellum, is extensively connected to the areas of the brainstem that participate in cardiovascular regulation and vestibular signal processing. This suggests that the uvula regulates blood pressure (BP) during postural alterations. Previous studies showed that lesions of the uvula affected the baroreceptor reflex and cardiovascular responses during postural alterations. To investigate the mechanisms underlying this BP regulation, it is necessary to have a method to selectively modulate the activity of Purkinje cells (PCs), the sole ou

Continuous wavelet transform of aortic pressure oscillations in anesthetized dogs: effects of 45 degrees tilting.

The time-frequency analysis of signals by means of continuous wavelet transform (CWT) was applied to blood pressure oscillations recorded from the aorta of anesthetized dogs. This method yielded two and three-dimensional representations of either the module or phase in function of time, in contrast with the fast Fourier transform (FFT) which gives the spectrum in the frequency domain. From the CWT of arterial pressure oscillations we obtained visual information on aortic valves closure, heart rate, respiratory rate and smooth muscle contractions in arterial and arteriolar walls (very low frequ

Pressor response elicited by nose-up vestibular stimulation in cats.

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether selective activation of vestibular receptors produces changes in blood pressure. Blood pressure was recorded during trapezoidal head rotations in cats with extensive denervations to eliminate nonlabyrinthine inputs that could be produced by the movements. Large (50 degrees) nose-up trapezoidal head tilts produced an increase in blood pressure of approximately 18 mmHg; ear-down tilt produced little change in blood pressure. The changes in blood pressure began approximately 1.4 s after the plateau of the stimulus. The responses to nose-up

Differences in overshoot of blood pressure after head-up tilt in two groups with chronic autonomic failure: pure autonomic failure and multiple system atrophy.

On head down tilt to the supine horizontal position (tilt reversal) after head up tilt (HUT), patients with orthostatic hypotension may show an increase in blood pressure (BP) relative to baseline readings. We assessed this BP overshoot in 8 patients with pure autonomic failure (PAF, 64+/-13 years) and 8 patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA, 66+/-10 years). BP was intermittently measured during pre-tilt supine, HUT (60 degrees , 10 min), and post-tilt supine periods. In addition, beat-to-beat BP was measured continuously using the Portapres model 2 device to calculate stroke volume (SV),

10-degree reverse Trendelenburg position on hemodynamic parameters and block characteristics in unilateral spinal anesthesia in below knee orthopedic surgeries - can head up position do the trick?

Unilateral spinal anesthesia (USpA) is a technique used to restrict the effect of the spinal block on the operative side. 10-15 degrees reverse Trendelenburg position has been used to control the height of the spinal block using hyperbaric drugs. We aimed to study the effect of the 10-degree reverse Trendelenburg position on the quality of block and hemodynamic stability in unilateral spinal anesthesia in this hospital-based, double-blind, randomized clinical trial. 60 patients of both sexes between 20-60 years of age, undergoing below-knee orthopedic surgeries, were randomized into 2 groups.

Effect of jump exercise training on long-term head-down bed rest-induced cerebral blood flow responses in arteries and veins.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? What is the effect of an exercise countermeasure on microgravity-induced change in cerebral blood flow? What is the main finding and its importance? Jump exercise training as a countermeasure did not modify the heterogeneous cerebral blood flow response to head-down bed rest, suggesting that this method is effective in preventing cardiovascular system deconditioning but is not good for cerebral haemodynamics. ABSTRACT: This study aimed to examine the effect of an exercise countermeasure on cerebral blood flow (CBF) response to long-ter

Well leg compartment syndrome postorthognathic surgery under hypotensive anesthesia and reverse Trendelenburg position: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Well leg compartment syndrome is a rare postoperative condition that occurs as a result of non-traumatic ischemic insult. It has similar pathophysiology to compartment syndrome; however, no definitive etiology is identified. Several risk factors such as patient position, leg position, young age, and high BMI for the development of this condition are considered. CASE REPORT: A 30 years old male smoker and overweight, underwent mandibular and maxillary osteotomies in reverse Trendelenburg position. He developed a WLCS post-operative and treated with fasciotomy. CONCLUSION: Increa

[A device to stimulate sea sickness in horizontal and head-down positions].

A device enabling to expose small laboratory animals (rabbits, cats, etc.) to sea sickness using the swing with one suspended bar in an automatic mode both in horizontal and head-down position with different tilt angles has been developed. The device can be used for affecting during unlimited periods of time the otolith apparatus and semicircular canals in combination, if need be, with antiorthostatic hypokinesia. The design provides quick and easy installation of the container with an animal in horizontal or head-down position.

The effect of sleeping posture on occupant injury in frontal coach crashes.

The safety of coaches in frontal crashes is attracting attention in various countries. Coach crash studies are done based on standard postures. Occupants travelling long distances in coaches may fall asleep, with postures that can be different from the standard posture. This paper investigates the effects of different sleeping postures on occupant injuries in frontal coach collisions by using sled test model and dummies. Four different sleeping postures are considered including head tilted sideway, slide down on seat in neutral position, turned torso-head diagonal with backrest and turned tors

Assessment of Perioperative Atelectasis Using Lung Ultrasonography in Patients Undergoing Pneumoperitoneum Surgery in the Trendelenburg Position: Aspects of Differences according to Ventilatory Mode.

BACKGROUND: During robotic gynecologic pneumoperitoneum surgery in the Trendelenburg position, aeration loss leads to perioperative atelectasis. Recently developed ventilator mode pressure-controlled ventilation volume-guaranteed (PCV-VG) mode could provide adequate ventilation with lower inspiratory pressure compared to volume-controlled ventilation (VCV); we hypothesized that PCV-VG mode may be beneficial in reducing perioperative atelectasis via low tidal volume (VT) of 6 mL/kg ventilation during robotic gynecologic pneumoperitoneum surgery in the Trendelenburg position. We applied lung ult

Orthostatic Hypotension: Epidemiology, Prognosis, and Treatment.

Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is a common cardiovascular disorder, with or without signs of underlying neurodegenerative disease. OH is diagnosed on the basis of an orthostatic challenge and implies a persistent systolic/diastolic blood pressure decrease of at least 20/10 mm Hg upon standing. Its prevalence is age dependent, ranging from 5% in patients <50 years of age to 30% in those >70 years of age. OH may complicate treatment of hypertension, heart failure, and coronary heart disease; cause disabling symptoms, faints, and traumatic injuries; and substantially reduce quality of life. Despite

Cerebellar control of the cardiovascular responses during postural changes in conscious rabbits.

In conscious control rabbits, tilting the head 30 degrees up from a position 30 degrees down induced initially an inhibition in the renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA), however this inhibition immediately released and became a transient increase. Following these responses in RSNA, blood pressure (BP) initially decreased but recovered to the control level within 3-5 s. After bilateral destruction of the lateral nodulus-uvula in the cerebellum, in contrast, the same tilting of the head caused an immediate large increase in RSNA without early inhibition, which was sustained at a high level. Body volume changes during simulated microgravity: auditory changes, segmental fluid redistribution, and regional hemodynamics.

Space adaptation syndrome (SAS), manifested by cephalad fluid shifts, spacial disorientation, nausea, and vomiting, is of varied expression and uncertain etiology. One theory is that fluid shift to the upper body alters the function of the vestibular apparatus to create an entity similar to Meniere's disease. Since clinical vestibular dysfunction syndromes are mirrored by altered cochlear function, this experiment was undertaken to study the relation between fluid redistribution and the auditory effects of initial antiorthostatic bed rest. Manual and bone audiometry, impedance tympanometry, an
