[Structure of communication between physicians and patients from the viewpoint of community health].

Understanding the structure and problems of communication between physicians and patients should be achieved before introducing a medical information network system for community health. To this end a questionnaire survey was performed on 2,362 patients who saw physicians in medical facilities in a certain district of Hiroshima city. As a result, it was revealed that 'explanations given by doctors' and 'explanatory ability of patients' were mutually closely related and formed a basis for other aspects of communication and patient behavior. Satisfaction with the explanation given by physicians

Effectiveness of family-provider communication interventions on family's psychological health, communication quality, and health care utilization in the ICU: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

OBJECTIVE: This review aims to assess evidence regarding the effectiveness of family-provider communication interventions. METHODS: We searched six databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, EMBASE, CINAHL and the Cochrane Library). Two researchers independently extracted data and assessed bias. Data were analyzed using Stata software and Review Manager. RESULTS: Nineteen studies were included. Communication interventions had a moderate effect on family needs (SMD = -0.43, 95 % CI: -0.81 to -0.06, P = 0.025), small effects on 6-month psychological distress (Overall: SMD = -0.14, 95 % CI: -

Qualitative accounts of community health workers providing and shaping mental health support in climate-vulnerable communities in Bangladesh.

Despite a clear need for mental health services in Bangladesh, there is limited access and provision, especially in areas vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Community health workers (CHWs) are commonplace primary care givers in rural communities and promise to deliver more culturally sensitive and pragmatic services. This study seeks to understand the experiences and perceptions of CHWs who have received basic training in mental health and are providing initial mental health support as the only providers of such care in underserved communities in Bangladesh. We conducted an explorato

Implementation of the national community health policy in Guinea: a decision space analysis of the roles and responsibilities of community health workers.

INTRODUCTION: Community health workers (CHW) are crucial for universal health coverage (UHC) in low- and middle-income countries. Decentralization supports this goal but can cause issues if local actors misunderstand their roles. This study explores how Guinea's local health system actors understood and executed their responsibilities in delivering community health services from 2017 to 2021. METHODS: This is a subanalysis of 168 CHW from a larger study of 522 respondents on the implementation of community health policy in Guinea. We used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design to asses

From data to action: a community-centered framework for translating community health assessment into coordinated public health strategy.

Public health agencies routinely conduct community health assessments, yet many jurisdictions continue to face challenges translating population health data into coordinated action that addresses structural determinants of health, health equity, and public health infrastructure needs. These challenges became increasingly visible during the COVID-19 pandemic and highlight the need for community-centered approaches that align public health, healthcare systems, and community partnerships across sectors. This Policy and Practice Review presents a community-centered framework for translating local

Linguistic explicitness and lay‑adapted translation in health communication: A randomized controlled trial of prostate cancer screening communication among elderly Chinese males.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer incidence in China is rising rapidly, yet health communication remains hindered by cultural stigma, low health literacy, and a lack of linguistically accessible materials. This study investigates how translation strategies prioritizing lay-friendliness and cultural relevance impact comprehension of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening benefits and risks among elderly Chinese males-a demographic underrepresented in health literacy research. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial comparing two translated versions of PSA screening guidelines: a large

Examining Patterns of Community Health Worker Core Roles Within the Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities Program: A Latent Class Analysis.

Objectives. To examine patterns of community health worker (CHW) core roles within the Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities (CCR) program through a latent class analysis (LCA). Methods. We used data from a CHW self-report survey (n = 689) conducted in the United States during February and March 2024. LCA was used to examine whether distinct classes existed according to patterns of reported engagement in CHW core roles in the CCR program. Results. The study findings supported a 2-class model: (1) "low assessment and evaluation CHWs," which represented 52.6% of C

Assessing the acceptability of photographs and medical illustrations in Buruli ulcer health communication among health providers, community volunteers and community members in endemic districts of Ghana.

BACKGROUND: The control of Buruli ulcer (BU) relies on early case detection to improve disease outcomes. While lesion photographs are currently used in health communication materials, they have many drawbacks. Medical illustrations, though proven effective in many contexts, remain unutilised for skin NTDs. We therefore aimed to assess their acceptability in health communication materials in BU-endemic districts of Ghana. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted eleven focus group discussions, using a guide developed from the PICO framework and the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability (T

Risks posed by AI actants in human-AI health communication: AI health assistants facing HIV-related stigma inquiries.

This study conceptualizes AI health assistants as agentic non-human actants and examines how a mainstream Chinese AI health assistant responds to HIV-related stigmatizing inquiries. The findings reveal that in 22% of its responses, the AI reproduced or exacerbated both public and self-stigma by using structured interaction scripts-predefined conversational patterns designed to guide the dialogue. Notably, a key finding is the presence of an asymmetric emotional modulation mechanism in the AI's replies: when patients expressed anger or sadness, the AI tended to provide destigmatizing support; h

Multiple risk factors and the likelihood of patient-physician communication and health maintenance services in medicare health plans.

This study examined both individual and combined effects of race, education, and health-based risk factors on health maintenance services among Medicare plan members. Data were from 110 238 elderly completing the 2006 Medicare Health Outcomes Survey. Receipt of recommended patient-physician communication and interventions for urinary incontinence, physical activity, falls, and osteoporosis was modeled as a function of risk factors. Low education decreased the odds of receiving services; poor health increased odds. Race had little effect. Evidence suggested moderation among competing effects. W

A systematic review of the evidence on the effect of parental communication about health and health behaviours on children's health and wellbeing.

Parents report feeling unsure how best to talk with their children about sensitive health topics and may avoid such conversations; yet if children have questions or concerns about their health, talking to a parent could enhance their health and wellbeing. We investigated the effects of parental communications about health and health behaviours on children's health and wellbeing, and explored what strategies can encourage parents to communicate about health. We conducted a systematic review and narrative synthesis of research published between January 2008 and April 2020 from five databases. Of

Two Health Communication Researchers Watch The Pitt: A Collaborative Dialogue Exploring Paradigmatic Difference.

Health communication is a paradigmatically diverse field shaped by post-positivist, interpretive, critical, and cultural studies traditions. While these approaches provide rich scholarly insights on their own, we believe there is something to be gained by engaging in cross-paradigmatic research, specifically through dialogue. This research explores how divergent paradigmatic orientations can intersect productively through a collaborative dialogue analyzing of The Pitt, a medical drama that premiered on HBO Max in January 2025. As two health communication scholars-one post-positivist and one cr

Sociodemographic differences in dementia prevention knowledge in Germany: Implications for targeted health communication.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a leading cause of disability and mortality worldwide. While the disorder is widely recognized, public awareness of modifiable risk and potentially protective factors remains limited. This is despite evidence that a substantial proportion of cases could be prevented or delayed by modifying personal risk factors. To date, the influence of sociodemographic factors on knowledge about dementia prevention has not been sufficiently examined, particularly in Germany, leaving a critical gap for targeted public health strategies. OBJECTIVES: To assess awareness of the preventab

Addressing HPV vaccine hesitancy and misinformation in India through public health communication strategies.

India witnessed a significant step forward in cervical cancer prevention and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine coverage with the rollout of a nationwide free HPV vaccination drive aimed at vaccinating 14‑y‑old girls. However, the campaign's success rate can be significantly reduced if timely measures to tackle vaccine hesitancy and related misinformation are not taken into account. This commentary article discusses the effects of HPV vaccine misinformation, identifies global vaccine hesitancy factors, and highlights behavioral determinants affecting HPV vaccine hesitancy and its coverage in I

Earning Trust Before the Crisis: Health Literacy and Communication Readiness in Healthcare Systems.

Risk communication and community engagement are fundamental to healthcare preparedness, yet many systems still focus solely on communication during a public health emergency. At this point, trust may be fragile, misinformation may be circulating, and healthcare professionals may be asked to explain changing guidance without sufficient preparation or organizational support. This Perspective starts from the premise that communication and community engagement should begin before a crisis. We argue that messaging alone is insufficient to earn trust; healthcare systems must be transparent, accessib
