Hostility and the educational gradient in health. The mediating role of health-related behaviours.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to study hostility as a factor intermediate in the association between educational level and health. METHODS: 1997 cross-sectional data from the Dutch GLOBE study (1675 men and 1819 women) was used. The analyses distinguishes between direct effects of hostility on health, and indirect effects, which are through health-related behaviours. The latter indicates that hostile people may be at risk of adverse health, because they engage in unhealthy behaviours. Data were analysed with logistic regression techniques. RESULTS: Among men and women, the odds of less than good h

No Free Lunch in Competency-Based Health Professions Education: Exploring Trade-Offs, Value, and Shared Investment in Health Professions Education.

BACKGROUND/PROBLEM: Competency-Based Health Professions Education (CBHPE) aims to improve workforce readiness, patient safety, and equity, but achieving these outcomes requires sustained investment. The "No Free Lunch" (NFL) rule underscores that value cannot be realized without visible costs, which can be financial, cultural, temporal, and structural. Although costs are ideally shared across the health professions education and health care ecosystem, interest holders often invest unevenly despite broad benefits. As a result, many programs and institutions struggle to implement and sustain CBH

The military health system: a community of solutions for medical education, health care delivery, and public health.

Multiple strategies have been proposed to improve health care in the United States. These include the development of communities of solution (COSs), implementation of patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs), and lengthening family medicine residency training. There is scant literature on how to build and integrate these ideal models of care, and no literature about how to build a model of care integrating all 3 strategies is available. The Military Health System has adopted the PCMH model and will offer some 4-year family medicine residency positions starting in 2013. Lengthening residency trai

Learner-Educator Co-creation of Student Assessment in Health Professional Education Courses: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Co-creation means engaging learners in working collaboratively to make decisions about course planning, implementation, or student assessment. Involving students in these decisions potentially enhances learning. When co-creation is part of assessment, it may reach more learners but may also pose pragmatic challenges. In this review, we focused on co-creation of assessment that may occur at any time during a health professional course. Systematic examination of learner-educator co-creation is needed to inform how educators can engage strategically in co-creation with healthcare stud

Integrating Behavioral Health Into Cancer Education: Learner Perspectives From a Cancer Education Pathway Program.

INTRODUCTION: Comprehensive cancer care requires providers to address significant psychological and social challenges, yet behavioral health is often underemphasized in early medical education. The Student-centered Pipeline to Advance Research in Cancer Careers (SPARCC) program provided a setting to enhance learners' understanding of the psychosocial aspects of cancer by integrating behavioral health-focused sessions. METHODS: We evaluated 2 behavioral health sessions implemented as part of the SPARCC curriculum: one addressing the psychological impact of a cancer diagnosis and the other expl

Impacts of continuing education for health professionals in primary health care: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Continuing Health Education (CHE) is an essential strategy for the continuous qualification of Primary Health Care (PHC) professionals, promoting knowledge updating and improving the quality of services. In Brazil, this process is especially relevant given the challenges faced by the Unified Health System (SUS) and the need for training aligned with local demands. Understanding the impact of CHE actions in PHC is crucial to identify their effects on professional practice and health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To identify and analyze the evidence on the impacts of CHE for health profess

The mental health of children in homeless families and their contact with health, education and social services.

Previous research indicates that children in homeless families have a high risk of physical and mental illness. This study reports the initial stage of a longitudinal research programme to measure the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among parents and children in homeless families. A sample of parents in 113 homeless families were interviewed within 2 weeks of admission to seven homeless centres in the City of Birmingham, and compared with a sample of 29 low-income families who were not homeless. Both sets of interviews used the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL), the Communication Domain of

Breast screening clinic versus health education session as outlets for education in breast self-examination.

A population based programme to educate women in breast self-examination (BSE) was organised as part of the UK Trial of Early Detection of Breast Cancer. Women who responded to an invitation to a meeting were educated in groups and were not routinely screened. Open access clinics offered x ray and clinical examination to all women in the study age group of 45 to 64. Women who presented for screening without prior BSE education were taught individually by clinic staff. Women taught by the two methods were surveyed by post and their BSE practice since education was compared. It was hypothesised

Advancing health equity through simulation-based education for pre-health students.

INTRODUCTION: Basic sciences are foundational for a career in the health professions. However, interest in the sciences wanes as students in the United States progress through K-12 education and reaches a nadir in the undergraduate years; this decline is particularly marked in underrepresented communities. In addition, difficulty in basic sciences may present as a barrier to entering the health professions. This study examines clinical simulation as an adjunct to lectures for promoting pre-health students' understanding, retention, and recall of the basic sciences as well as the feasibility an
