Virus sharing, genetic sequencing, and global health security.

This Perspective focuses on the future of the Pandemic Influenza Preparedness (PIP) Framework, which was initially established to promote the fair sharing of public health-related pandemic influenza samples between countries. We examine the changes that need to be made to address the growing likelihood that genetic sequence data might be shared instead of physical virus samples, as well as the need to expand the PIP framework's scope and to improve its fairness.

Association between prostate cancer and mental health: a comparison across cancer types using the medical expenditure panel survey, 2017-2022.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate whether men with prostate cancer (PCa) experience better mental health outcomes than those with other major cancers, using nationally representative data. METHODS: We conducted a repeated cross-sectional study using Medical Expenditure Panel Survey Household Component data (2017-2022). Respondents were categorized as having no history of cancer, PCa, or non-prostate cancer (non-PCa). The primary outcome was fair/poor self-rated mental health. Secondary outcomes included major depressive symptoms (PHQ-2 ≥ 3) and serious psychological distress (K6 ≥ 13). Multivariable lo

Self-rated health and the risk of incident chronic kidney disease: a community-based Korean study.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between self-rated health (SRH) and the development of incident chronic kidney disease (CKD) has not been explored in the general population. METHODS: We reviewed the data of 7027 participants in the Ansung-Ansan cohort study. SRH was categorized as poor, fair, or good, and the outcome was the development of CKD, defined as the first event of an estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2, at least twice during the follow-up period. Hazard ratios (HRs) and confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using Cox proportional hazards regression analysis.

A Longitudinal Analysis of Self-Rated Health Correlates and Predictors in Hurricane Survivors.

INTRODUCTION: Poor self-rated health (i.e., perceived health status relative to same-aged individuals) is associated with elevated all-cause mortality. Research examining post-disaster self-rated health is limited but could inform disaster theory and interventions. Identifying and subsequently mitigating individual and contextual determinants of self-rated health could address adverse, downstream effects. METHOD: The current study includes secondary analyses from a randomized controlled trial of a digital mental health intervention in a diverse sample of 1357 hurricane-affected adults (49.5%

Qualitative Analysis of Colorectal Cancer Screening in Rural Nebraska.

Compared to urban residents, rural populations are less likely to engage in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. As part of a statewide cancer needs assessment, we aimed to elicit rural perspectives about CRC screening and resources. We conducted three focus groups with rural Nebraska cancer survivors and caregivers (N = 20) in Spring 2021 using a collective case study design. Participant awareness of and knowledge about CRC screening methods varied across focus groups; overall, 95% of participants had heard of colonoscopy. Participants were less familiar with fecal tests and had confusion about

Organ transplants and education: experience of the Universidade Federal de Ciências da Saúde de Porto Alegre with subjects.

INTRODUCTION: Today there is an insufficient number of donated organs in Brazil. This is particularly due to the general population's and health care professionals' lack of information. Therefore, with this project we intend to consolidate knowledge on organ donation to teach health care students of different areas so they are able to propagate such knowledge. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 2006, at Universidade Federal de Ciências da Saúde de Porto Alegre, an "Organ donation and transplants" subject was created, with the aim to educate health care students. In the next years, it was split in two

Urinary arsenic, heavy metals, phthalates, pesticides, polyaromatic hydrocarbons but not parabens, polyfluorinated compounds are associated with self-rated health: USA NHANES, 2011-2012.

Links between environmental chemicals and human health have emerged, but the effects on self-rated health were less studied. Therefore, it was aimed to study the relationships of different sets of urinary environmental chemicals and the self-rated health in a national and population-based study in recent years. Data was retrieved from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, 2011-2012, including demographics, serum measurements, lifestyle factors, self-rated health (with two grouping approaches) and urinary environmental chemical concentrations. The Relationship Between Living Alone and Self-Rated Health Varies by Age: Evidence From the National Health Interview Survey.

Despite growing attention to the connection between living arrangements and health, less is known about how the health of individuals living alone varies by age. Using data from the 2016 National Health Interview Survey (N = 30,079), we estimated logistic regression models stratified by age group, comparing health by living arrangement and controlling for sociodemographic characteristics. Middle-aged adults living alone had higher odds of poor/fair self-rated health, compared with adults living with others (35-64 years of age: adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.19, p < .05). In contrast, older adul

Lumbar disc herniations: the predictive value of the Health Attribution Test (HAT) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI).

Ninety-one patients who were treated for lumbar disc herniation with chymopapain chemonucleolysis were evaluated preoperatively by means of the Health Attribution Test (HAT) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). There were 54 good, 10 fair, and 27 poor results after chemo-nucleolysis. Nineteen patients subsequently underwent lumbar laminectomy and discectomy and the ultimate outcome for the entire series including these laminectomy patients was 66 good, 10 fair, and 15 poor results. The fair/poor chemonucleolysis outcome patients scored significantly lower than did the go

Perceived Discrimination Based on Criminal Record in Healthcare Settings and Self-Reported Health Status among Formerly Incarcerated Individuals.

Perceived discrimination based on criminal record is associated with social determinants of health such as housing and employment. However, there is limited data on discrimination based on criminal record within health care settings. We examined how perceived discrimination based on criminal record within health care settings, among individuals with a history of incarceration, was associated with self-reported general health status. We used data from individuals recruited from 11 sites within the Transitions Clinic Network (TCN) who were released from prison within the prior 6 months, had a ch

Prevention Adaptation of an Evidence-Based Treatment for Parents Involved With Child Welfare Who Use Substances.

Background: Parental substance use, especially opioid misuse and/or methamphetamine use, is a key driver for recent increases in family involvement with child welfare and foster care placements in the United States. There is an urgent need for programs that prevent parental substance use disorders, yet few prevention programs exist that target parents' unique needs and strengths. Adapting evidence-based treatment approaches for prevention might be an efficient, effective way to address this gap. The current study informed the rigorous adaptation of an evidence-based treatment that supports fam

Assessment fairness at the nexus of validity: Linking fairness threats to score meaning.

INTRODUCTION: Nearly a century after Kelley's seminal work Interpretation of educational measurements, we revisit the concept of validity to argue that fairness is not a downstream equity add-on but a core requirement throughout the assessment lifecycle. In health professions education, where assessment decisions shape learner progression and patient care, validity arguments must justify the meaning and use of scores for all examinees in equity-relevant contexts. METHODS: We advance a fairness-as-validity position: Fairness consists of validity claims about whether scores carry comparable mea

High prevalence of metabolic syndrome in young Hispanic women: findings from the national Sister to Sister campaign.

BACKGROUND: Hispanics are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population and have a higher prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors as compared with non-Hispanic whites. Further data suggests that Hispanics have undiagnosed complications of metabolic syndrome, namely diabetes mellitus, at an earlier age. We sought to better understand the epidemiology of metabolic syndrome in Hispanic women using data from a large, community-based health screening program. METHODS: Using data from the Sister to Sister: The Women's Heart Health Foundation community health fairs from 2008 to 2009 held in

Building a Global Research Network for Fair, Accountable, Interpretable, and Responsible AI in Emergency Care: Protocol for a FAIR-EC Study.

BACKGROUND: The current landscape of emergency care (EC) is marked by high demand, leading to issues such as emergency department boarding, overcrowding, and subsequent delays that impact the quality and safety of patient care. Integrating data science into EC can enhance decision-making with predictive, preventative, personalized, and participatory approaches. However, gaps in adherence to fairness, accountability, interpretability, and responsibility are evident, particularly due to barriers to data-sharing, which often result in a lack of transparency and robust oversight in these applicati
