Health information needs of women with gestational diabetes mellitus: a qualitative study.

Glycemic control in women with gestational diabetes mellitus(GDM) is largely dependent on effective self-management. The adequacy of health information provided plays a critical role in determining self-management success. While existing studies recognise the importance of addressing health information needs, the specific needs of women with GDM in China remain unclear. Sixteen women diagnosed with GDM were recruited using purposive sampling from a tertiary general hospital in Hefei, Anhui Province, China. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted individually. The verbatim transc

Prehospital time indicators before and after the implementation of an electronic information management system (EIMS): a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The prehospital emergency system faces significant challenges, including a lack of coordination, primarily due to poor communication of information. An electronic information management system (EIMS) was introduced in Iran to improve coordination. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the impact of the system on the time indicators in prehospital emergency services in Kermanshah, Iran. METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study conducted in 2022, time indicators were compared for 900 PCRs: 450 from the paper-based system (2016–2017) and 450 from the electronic PCR system

Oil on the water: Government regulation of a carcinogen in the twentieth-century Lancashire cotton spinning industry.

In the Lancashire cotton textile industry, mule spinners were prone to a chronic and sometimes fatal skin cancer (often affecting the groin). The disease had reached epidemic proportions by the 1920s, which necessitated action by the government, employers, and trade unions. In contrast to previous accounts, this article focuses on the government's reaction to mule spinners' cancer. Using official records in the National Archives, the slow introduction of health and safety measures by the government is explored in detail. Although obstructionism by the employers played a key role, one of the re

Surveillance of occupational noise exposures using OSHA's Integrated Management Information System.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to noise has long been known to cause hearing loss, and is an ubiquitous problem in workplaces. Occupational noise exposures for industries stored in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) can be used to identify temporal and industrial trends of noise exposure to anticipate changes in rates of hearing loss. METHODS: The noise records in OSHA's IMIS database for 1979-1999 were extracted by major industry division and measurement criteria. The noise exposures were summarized by year, industry, and employme

Information system concepts for quality measurement.

BACKGROUND: Health care information systems in use today frequently fall short of what is needed to meet the demands for data and reporting on performance. Many observers believe substantial improvements in information systems will be necessary if the potential of a national quality measurement and reporting system (NQMRS) is to be realized. A shared vision will facilitate progress in improving information systems. OBJECTIVES: To articulate a set of guiding principles and operational steps for the development of functional information systems in health care. RESEARCH DESIGN: Experience in bu

Coordinated computerized systems aimed at management, control, and quality assurance of medical processes and informatics.

PURPOSE: As part of the routine work of the medical committees in the Israel Defense Forces, a unique nationwide computerized control system is being implemented to assess and manage medical processes. The purpose of this paper is to report on that implementation. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The computerized system consists of three main components: a specific status indicating the processes in each file, an appointment system, and an internal computerized system that uses a magnetic card for the regulation of the local waiting lists. FINDINGS: The combined computerized system improves the

Introduction to the newborn screening fact sheets.

Newborn screening fact sheets were last revised in 1996 by the Committee on Genetics of the American Academy of Pediatrics. These fact sheets have been revised again because of advances in the field, including technologic innovations such as tandem mass spectrometry, as well as greater appreciation of ethical issues such as informed consent. The fact sheets provide information to assist pediatricians and other professionals who care for children in performing their essential role within the newborn screening public health system. The newborn screening system consists of 5 parts: (1) newborn te

Assessing information needs and use of online resources for disease self-management in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a qualitative study.

To explore the information needs of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and their acceptance of online resources and Facebook in particular, as a source of information, interaction, and support among peers. Participants were adults with RA of ≤ 10 years duration, had ongoing or prior treatment with disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs or biologic agents, and internet access. We conducted 20 in-depth interviews using semi-structured interview guide to explore: (1) RA information needs, (2) use of self-management health behaviors, (3) use of internet resources for disease management, (4) r

Recommendations for treating depression in community-based older adults.

OBJECTIVE: To present recommendations for community-based treatment of late-life depression to public health and aging networks. METHODS: An expert panel of mental health and public health researchers and community-based practitioners in aging was convened in April 2006 to form consensus-based recommendations. When making recommendations, panelists considered feasibility and appropriateness for community-based delivery, as well as strength of evidence on program effectiveness from a systematic literature review of articles published through 2005. RESULTS: The expert panel strongly recommende

Health information system in primary health care units of the Central Zone, Tigray, Northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Health information systems require the management of health information through health management information systems and research and knowledge management. In many low-income countries, including Ethiopia, poor data quality and limited use of health information remain major challenges in the health system. Reliable health data quality is essential for evidence-based decision-making and improving quality health service delivery. This study aimed to assess and explore the contextual factors of the quality and utilization of health information in primary health care units in the Cent

Gaps in Evidence-Based Recommendations for Low Back Pain: Analysis of the Accuracy of the Care Pathway in Primary Care.

BACKGROUND: Primary health care is the gateway to low back pain (LBP) management. Effective management of LBP can reduce disability and socioeconomic burden. Standardised, accurate, and evidence-based information for assertive decision-making in care pathways for LBP has the potential to improve health service efficiency. OBJECTIVE: To describe and analyse the accuracy of the information on the care pathway for the management of LBP in primary care provided by the Ministry of Health from Brazil. Periodontal health and global public health.

Chronic diseases are a growing burden to people, to health-care systems and to societies across the world. The rapid increase in the burden of chronic diseases is particularly prevalent in the developing countries. Periodontal disease is one of the two most important oral diseases contributing to the global burden of chronic disease. In addition to social determinants, periodontal health status is related to several proximal factors. Modifiable risk factors, such as tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet and nutrition, obesity, psychological stress and insufficient personal/oral

Availability and Accuracy of EMS Information about Chronic Health and Medications in Cardiac Arrest.

INTRODUCTION: Field information available to emergency medical services (EMS) about a patient's chronic health conditions or medication therapies could help direct patient care or be used to investigate outcome disparities. However, little is known about the field availability or accuracy of information of chronic health conditions or chronic medication treatments in emergent circumstances, especially when the patient cannot serve as an information resource. We evaluated the prehospital availability and accuracy of specific chronic health conditions and medication treatments among out-of-hospi
