Food systems determinants of nutritional health and wellbeing in urban informal settlements: A scoping review in LMICs.

INTRODUCTION: Increasing food and nutritional inequities are apparent in urban settings across Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), along with nutrition transition towards ultra-processed diets high in fat, sugar, and salt. In urban informal settlements, characterized by insecurity and inadequate housing and infrastructure, food systems dynamics and their nutritional implications are poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: This paper explores the food system determinants of food and nutrition security in urban informal settlements in LMICs with the goal of identifying effective approaches and ent

Health management information system (HMIS) data quality and associated factors in Massaguet district, Chad.

BACKGROUND: Quality data from Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) are important for tracking the effectiveness of malaria control interventions. However, HMIS data in many resource-limited settings do not currently meet standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO). We aimed to assess HMIS data quality and associated factors in Chad. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 14 health facilities in Massaguet district. Data on children under 15 years were obtained from the HMIS and from the external patient register covering the period January-December 2018. An addition

Health management information system (HMIS) data verification: A case study in four districts in Rwanda.

INTRODUCTION: Reliable Health Management and Information System (HMIS) data can be used with minimal cost to identify areas for improvement and to measure impact of healthcare delivery. However, variable HMIS data quality in low- and middle-income countries limits its value in monitoring, evaluation and research. We aimed to review the quality of Rwandan HMIS data for maternal and newborn health (MNH) based on consistency of HMIS reports with facility source documents. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 76 health facilities (HFs) in four Rwandan districts. For 14 MNH data elemen

Analysis of the pediatric health information system database as a surveillance tool for travel-associated infectious diseases.

The Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) database collects admission, diagnostic, and treatment data among 44 children's hospitals across the United States (U.S.) and presents an opportunity for travel-associated infectious disease (TAID) surveillance. We calculated cumulative incidence rates among children admitted to 16 PHIS hospitals for dengue, malaria, and typhoid, and pooled TAID using discharge codes from 1999 to 2012. We compared incidence rates before, during, and after the 2007-2009 economic recession. Among 16 PHIS hospitals during the study period (1999-2012), incidence of de

Public health surveillance systems involving Indigenous Peoples: a scoping review protocol to inform circumpolar mental health and wellness surveillance.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health and well-being are urgent priorities across circumpolar regions, where suicide and psychological distress contribute substantially to premature mortality and disability. Indigenous communities in Arctic and sub-Arctic settings continue to face profound inequities linked to colonisation and intergenerational trauma, while also advancing wellness frameworks grounded in cultural continuity, language, land and self-determination. Progress in mental health promotion and suicide prevention depends on timely, consistent and culturally relevant population-level information.

Strengthening National Public Health Institutes for resilient health systems: evidence to inform policy and decision makers in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

National Public Health Institutes (NPHIs) are pivotal to health security, yet their performance could be constrained by complex, interlinked barriers. This paper examines these operational challenges, with a focus on the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), and argues that strengthening NPHIs requires context-specific, cross-domain policy action rather than isolated technical fixes. Drawing on global and EMR-specific experiences, we undertook an evidence-informed narrative synthesis of selectively identified peer-reviewed literature, documented case studies, and regional reports, to map barrier

Increased Hospitalizations for Neuropathies as Indicators of Zika Virus Infection, according to Health Information System Data, Brazil.

Evidence is increasing that Zika virus can cause extensive damage to the central nervous system, affecting both fetuses and adults. We sought to identify traces of possible clinical manifestations of nervous system diseases among the registers of hospital admissions recorded in the Brazilian Unified Health System. Time series of several diagnoses from the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, were analyzed by using control diagrams, during January 2008-February 2016. Beginning in mid-2014, we observed an unprecedented and significant rise in the hospitalization rate for cong

Electronic Health Record-Embedded, Behavioral Science-Informed System for Smoking Cessation for the Parents of Pediatric Patients.

BACKGROUND: Helping parents quit smoking is a public health priority. However, parents are rarely, if ever, offered tobacco use treatment through pediatric settings. Clinical decision support (CDS) systems developed for the workflows of pediatric primary care may support consistent screening, treatment, and referral. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop a CDS system by using human-centered design (HCD) that identifies parents who smoke, provides motivational messages to quit smoking (informed by behavioral science), and supports delivery of evidence-based tobacco treatment. METHODS: Our m
