OBJECTIVE: To describe lung cancer incidence, stage and post-diagnosis mortality in people accessing mental health services, focusing on people aged 50-70 targeted by Australia's new lung cancer screening programme.
METHODS: Linkage to the New South Wales Cancer Registry identified 39,680 lung cancer notifications from 2011 to 2020. Mental health services contact was defined as public mental health hospital or community care in the 5 years before cancer diagnosis. Measures include the following: (1) incidence standardised for age, sex and disadvantage; (2) odds of metastatic disease at diagno

OBJECTIVE: This study explored demographic characteristics of people who disclosed self-harm ideation (SHI) or behaviors (SH) and their accessing of mental health services (MHS) during three government-declared waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario, Canada.
METHODS: We analyze the results of a cross-sectional survey of adults in Ontario aged 18 years or older, representative of the provincial population based on age, gender, and location. The survey was conducted using Delvinia's AskingCanadians panel at three timepoints: August 2020 (n = 2500), March 2021 (n = 2500), and March 2022 (n =

Self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITBs) pose a clear risk to adolescents' health and well-being. Although established treatments (e.g., dialectical behavior therapy [DBT]) for youths experiencing SITB exist, numerous challenges reduce the feasibility of delivering such treatments in community-based settings. To address the need for increased access to specialized mental health treatments among youths, a state, provider, and university partnership was developed to codesign and implement a DBT-informed clinical training model within the existing community-based mental health provider teams

OBJECTIVE: Equitable access to hearing aids and related services remains a global health challenge, particularly in resource-limited settings. A major barrier to access is the lack of diagnostic and rehabilitative services, which is substantially attributable to the persistent shortage of ear and hearing care specialists. This discussion article provides an overview of limitations in the ear and hearing care workforce, the relevance of task sharing to ear and hearing care, and a new, evidence-based World Health Organization (WHO) technical resource aimed at improving access to hearing aids wor

BACKGROUND: Systemic inequities in health and social services exacerbate barriers for disadvantaged groups within the disability community, leading to poorer health outcomes and diminished quality of life. We aimed to evaluate how structural determinants function to shape disparities in access to health and support services for people with disability. METHODS: We followed Arksey and O’Malley’s methodological framework. A comprehensive search strategy was implemented across five major databases—Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus—focusing on four key concepts: social determinants, dis

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with disabilities face barriers to care. Using a life-course and socio-ecological perspective, we reviewed studies on the experiences of individuals with cognitive, intellectual, and developmental disabilities (CIDD) in accessing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services.
METHODS: We systematically searched six online databases and gray literature, selecting studies published from January 2010 to June 2024 written in English. Narrative synthesis was used to identify key themes using the socio-ecological framework. Data were collected by using a standardized extra

The objective was to analyze the factors associated with difficulty in accessing healthcare services among older population. This is a cross-sectional, analytical study using data from the 2019 National Health Survey, conducted between 2019 and 2020 with a random sample of 22,728 older adults. The outcome was the difficulty in accessing healthcare services, measured by seeking services but not being attended to, or when services were not sought despite a need due to individual difficulties. The exposures were sociodemographic characteristics, health insurance coverage, health conditions, and f

BACKGROUND: Many adolescents are at risk of dental caries and periodontal disease, which may be controlled through health education and clinical preventive interventions provided by oral health and dental therapists (therapists). Senior clinicians (SCs) can influence the focus of dental care in the New South Wales (NSW) Public Oral Health Services as their role is to provide clinical support and advice to therapists, advocate for their communities, and inform Local Health District (LHD) managers of areas for clinical quality improvement. The objective of this study was to record facilitating f

Migrant women, particularly those from low-resource settings, often face restricted access to reproductive health services in host countries due to intersecting social, economic, and structural barriers. This study explored these barriers among Afghan migrant women in Iran using the World Health Organization's Social Determinants of Health (SDH) model. This qualitative study employed semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 20 purposively sampled Afghan migrant women of reproductive age and 10 key informants from healthcare, midwifery, NGO, and policy backgrounds. Maximum variation sampling w

OBJECTIVE: Prior research has demonstrated the effectiveness of free, nonprofit mental health treatment programs for U.S. military veterans, but little is known about the characteristics and needs of veterans who use these services. This study aimed to examine demographic and clinical profiles of veterans receiving free tele-mental health care, with a focus on veterans' self-reported access to other treatment options.
METHODS: Veterans (N=148) who completed evidence-based mental health treatment were assessed for demographic factors, pre- and posttreatment psychological symptoms, and self-rep

INTRODUCTION: Children living in rural and remote communities experience challenges in dental care access. While several studies have reported barriers contributing to inequalities in services utilisation, a synthesis of evidence is lacking for those underserved children. In this review we explore the barriers and challenges to accessing oral health services among children and families living in rural and remote Australia.
METHODS: This review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for mixed-methods systematic review. We structured our review question using the PICO framework (popul

Vaccination and screening services are essential components of preventive care, yet access to these services remains unequal in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This narrative review examines health equity barriers affecting access to vaccination and screening services in LMICs, with screening evidence drawn predominantly from cervical cancer/HPV-related programs and selected other preventive screening contexts, and identifies strategies to improve equity in preventive care. Relevant English-language literature was identified through PubMed and Scopus and synthesized thematically

Achieving universal health coverage is a key component of the Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on equitable access to quality health services and minimising financial hardship. While strategies often target the demand-side, supply-side barriers such as travel time and facility-level constraints are often overlooked. Accurately quantifying who is affected by these barriers and identifying their locations and specific barriers is critical to improving service delivery. This study examines these barriers in Mali, a country with significant health system challenges exacerbated by high ferti

The sexual health of female sex workers is of particular concern due to severe complications arising from multiple and unprotected sexual relationships. This qualitative study, the initial study conducted in Iran, explored the sexual health needs, barriers, and facilitators to accessing sexual health services among women at high risk of STIs in Arak. In this qualitative research study, we used a content analysis design. Fourteen female sex workers who attended the specialized HIV center in Arak participated in the study. Data were collected and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Data

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a scoping review of 45 peer-reviewed articles to characterize the intersection of housing instability and homelessness, care, and services in rural North America. We sought gaps in literature related to geographically based health disparities among people experiencing housing instability and identify practices that may promote better health outcomes. We offer practical implications for health care and service provision for people experiencing housing instability in rural areas.
METHODS: We reviewed the literature and according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systemati

INTRODUCTION: Young women with disabilities (WWDs) face multiple barriers in accessing maternal healthcare services in low-resource settings. Consequently, they are at an increased risk of adverse maternal health outcomes due to young age and having a disability. This review focuses on synthesising evidence regarding the extent of access to maternal healthcare services and the barriers faced by young WWDs in Sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will conduct a scoping review guided by the updated Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews. A systematic search of MEDLINE, E

Background: Access to and use of health services represent crucial issues/challenges for older people experiencing frailty with functional limitations and chronic diseases, especially when they age in place alone. Both access to and use of health services are also characterised by gender differences. The present study analysed these factors in three Italian regions (Lombardy, North; Marche, Centre; and Calabria, South), where in 2019, the "Inclusive Ageing in Place" (IN-AGE) project was carried out, involving 120 senior people aged 65 years and of both genders. Methods: In this mixed-methods s

PURPOSE: Despite increased prevalence of sexual and reproductive health problems among people with severe mental illness (SMI), uptake of sexual and reproductive healthcare in this group is poor. The reasons for this are unclear. Therefore, this review aimed to identify the barriers and facilitators to accessing sexual and reproductive health services from a service user perspective.
METHODS: Three electronic databases were searched using key words for "sexual health" and "SMI". Data were screened and extracted by two independent reviewers. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tools
