Workplace programmes for HIV and tuberculosis: a systematic review to support development of international guidelines for the health workforce.

The health service sector has a vital role to play in delivering human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis (TB) prevention, treatment and care, yet evidence indicates that healthcare workers (HCWs) themselves lack adequate access to HIV and TB services. HCWs are also at increased risk from TB and other infectious diseases at work, and therefore accessing HIV services is particularly important. A systematic review was therefore conducted to inform the development of World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines to improve access to HIV and TB services, and specifically, to assess the evi

Workforce participation by persons with disabilities: the National Health Interview Survey Disability Supplement, 1994 to 1995.

Using the National Health Interview Survey Disability Supplement of 1994 to 1995, we examined the factors associated with employment among Americans with disabilities. Persons with disabilities who were more educated were more likely to be working. Married men were more likely to work than unmarried men (odds ratio [OR], 1.58). Blacks were less likely to work than whites (OR, 0.56). Persons with disabilities related to cardiovascular disease (OR, 0.23), musculoskeletal disease (OR, 0.37), and respiratory disease (OR, 0.23) were less likely to work than other Americans with disabilities. Health Care Analytics Challenges: A 3-Pillar Framework Connecting Analytics Maturity, Workforce Agility, and Technical Enablement.

Health care organizations face a "triple threat" of low analytics maturity, high workforce instability, and semantic technical barriers that together produce a crisis of "institutional amnesia." Leadership turnover, workforce shortages, and widespread intent to leave among informatics specialists systematically erase the tacit knowledge required to navigate complex clinical data schemas, trapping organizations in a cycle where knowledge loss outpaces knowledge capture. Viewed through the socialization, externalization, combination, and internalization model of knowledge creation by Nonaka, the

Healing after war/conflict: transformative health workforce strategies for a resilient future: a systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Human resources for health (HRH) are critical for effective healthcare delivery, particularly in post-conflict settings where health systems face severe challenges. Post-conflict environments often exacerbate pre-existing HRH challenges, such as shortages, poor working conditions, and limited training opportunities. This scoping review aims to identify and synthesize evidence on interventions addressing HRH in post-conflict settings, highlighting strategies, outcomes, and barriers to their implementation. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across multiple databases (e.g.,

Source country perceptions, experiences, and recommendations regarding health workforce migration: a case study from the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: The Philippines continues to overproduce nurses for export. Little first-hand evidence exists from leading organisations in the Philippines concerning their experiences and perceptions in relation to Filipino nurse migration. What are their views about health workforce migration? This paper addresses this research gap by providing a source country perspective on Filipino nurse migration to Australia. METHODS: Focus-group interviews were conducted with key informants from nine Filipino organisations in the Philippines by an Australian-Filipino research team. The organisations were

Attending to the Emotional Well-Being of the Health Care Workforce in a New York City Health System During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an enormous strain on health care workers, and its potential impact has implications for the physical and emotional well-being of the workforce. As hospital systems run well over capacity, facing possible shortages of critical care medical resources and personal protective equipment as well as clinician deaths, the psychological stressors necessitate a strong well-being support model for staff. At the Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) in New York City, health care workers have been heroically providing frontline care to COVID-19 patients while facing their own a

Understanding the mental health and intention to leave of the public health workforce in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence about the mental health and intention to leave of the public health workforce in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of burnout, symptoms of anxiety and depression, and intention to leave among the Canadian public health workforce, and associations with individual and workplace factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data collected by a Canada-wide survey from November 2022 to January 2023, where participants reported sociodemographic and workplace factors. From practice to academia: Specialist formation, stewardship and the sustainability of Australia's mental health nurse academic workforce.

Sustaining mental health capability in undergraduate nursing education requires an academic workforce able to teach, interpret and steward that knowledge over time. In Australia, however, the pathway from specialist mental health practice to academia is increasingly fragile: it is narrowed at multiple stages, weakly replenished, and vulnerable to further erosion when specialist expertise is valued but not structurally required. The problem extends beyond broader nurse academic shortages or individual reluctance to enter university work. It reflects the interaction of transition disincentives w

Women's health workforce and outpatient care delivery in Alberta: Evidence from 26 years of population-based data.

BACKGROUND: Many female-specific health services in Canada are delivered by obstetrician-gynecologists and family physicians. However, little is known about how patterns of care delivery, physician workforce supply, and patient characteristics have changed over time, limiting evidence-informed workforce and health system planning. OBJECTIVE: To examine long-term trends in outpatient women's health service delivery, physician workforce supply, and patient characteristics in Alberta and identify implications for workforce planning, access, and health system reform. METHODS: This population-bas

How Does the Mental Health Lived Experience Workforce Describe and Enact Our Discipline? A Narrative Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, mental health systems continue to grapple with providing recovery-oriented services as part of broader reform efforts. Critical to the objective of transforming mental health services is the employment of a rights-based, non-clinical lived experience workforce. Vital to undertaking the roles, and supporting this workforce, is a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge and practices of the discipline, particularly in situations where rapid growth may see this workforce developing in an ad hoc way. The aim of this review was to determine how members of the mental hea

New Linked Employee-Employer Data Show Workforce Composition Is Associated With Health Insurance Offers Among Small Employers.

Decades of research shows that small firms are much less likely to offer health insurance than large firms, but less is known about differences among small employers. We examine this issue using the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey-Insurance Component with Administrative Records (MEPS-ICAR), a unique employer-employee linked data set that is constructed by matching the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey-Insurance Component (MEPS-IC) to Internal Revenue Service administrative records and the Decennial Census. Multivariate analyses show that among firms with fewer than 50 workers, the probability

Interdisciplinary training academy for integrated substance/opioid use disorder prevention and health care: A workforce catalyst report.

INTRODUCTION: Addressing the opioid crisis requires attention to the fact that people with opioid use disorder are affected by multiple systems and professionals working across disciplines (e.g., primary health care, social work, psychology). Thus, we developed the Interdisciplinary Training Academy for Integrated Substance/Opioid Use Disorder Prevention and Health care (ITA). The purpose of the ITA is to connect multiple systems to aid in the development of practitioners who are broadly prepared to address the opioid crisis. METHOD: Herein, we use preliminary descriptive methods to illustrat

Occupational upper extremity disorders in the federal workforce. Prevalence, health care expenditures, and patterns of work disability.

Upper extremity disorders (UEDs) account for a significant number of work-related illnesses in the US workforce. Little information exists on the distribution of UEDs, their associated health care and indemnity costs, or patterns of work disability. The study presented is an analysis of upper extremity claims within the federal workforce. In this study, the universe consisted of all claims accepted by the US Department of Labor, Office of Workers' Compensation Programs (OWCP), from October 1, 1993, through September 30, 1994. A total of 185,927 claims of notices of injury were processed during

Separation from the CDC and its consequences for the public health workforce: findings from the CDC WISE Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Since January 2025, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shed more than one-quarter of its workforce through layoffs, contract cancellations, and fellowship terminations, raising urgent questions about the consequences for affected individuals and for national public health capacity. METHODS: We surveyed 430 former CDC employees, contractors, and fellows to examine the economic, health, and psychological impacts of these separations. RESULTS: Among respondents representing over 7300 combined years of public health experience, nearly 80% experienced involunta

Artificial Intelligence Replacement Dysfunction (AIRD): A Call to Action for Mental Health Professionals in an Era of Workforce Displacement.

Artificial intelligence replacement dysfunction (AIRD) is a new, proposed clinical construct describing the psychological and existential distress that could be experienced by individuals facing the threat or reality of job displacement due to artificial intelligence (AI). As AI systems increasingly automate tasks across industries, workers may present to mental health professionals with symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, depression, or identity confusion symptoms that may reflect deeper fears about relevance, purpose, and future employability. This paper introduces AIRD as a conceptual frame

Strengthening the Occupational Safety and Health Workforce: A Mixed Methods Evaluation of a NIOSH-Funded Education and Research Center.

BACKGROUND: Workplace injuries and fatalities remain persistent public health and occupational concerns in the United States. At the same time, emerging hazards, including automation, psychosocial stressors, climate-related exposures, and an aging workforce, are reshaping occupational risk profiles. These challenges underscore the need for a well-prepared occupational safety and health (OSH) workforce. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)-funded Education and Research Centers (ERCs) play a central role in workforce development through graduate education, research train
