BACKGROUND: Young adults (YA) with childhood-onset chronic conditions-particularly YA with cystic fibrosis (CF), congenital heart disease (CHD), and sickle cell disease (SCD)-continue to have pediatric hospital admissions. Factors associated with this continued pediatric hospital use remain underexplored.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if pediatric hospital use by YA differed (1) across condition and (2) within each condition by sociodemographic factors.
METHODS: Conducted a cross-sectional analysis of admissions for YA 22-35 years with CF, CHD, and SCD from 2016 to 2020 in the National Inpatient S

BACKGROUND: Socio-demographic factors have been suggested to contribute to differences in healthcare utilization for several elective orthopedic procedures. Reports on disparities in utilization of orthopedic trauma procedures remain limited. The purpose of our study is to assess the roles of clinical and socio-demographic variables in utilization of operative fixation of calcaneus fractures in the USA.
METHODS: The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) dataset was used to analyze all patients from 2005 to 2014 with closed calcaneal fractures. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performe

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder characterized by crescent-shaped red blood cells, which can result in a number of complications. SCD prevalence is higher in countries with limited resources and, in certain regions such as Lebanon, may be compounded by high consanguinity rates, posing significant challenges for both healthcare systems and patients. This study aimed to assess patient needs and the organization of SCD management centers, to identify service gaps, and enhance care.
METHODS: SCD patients, caregivers, or legal representatives completed questionnaires abo

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic adenocarcinoma of distal pancreas is hard to treat due to late presentation. While open distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy has had favourable outcomes, it has also had many complications which were low among Minimally invasive procedures. This retrospective cohort analysis compares minimally invasive and open distal pancreatectomy (MIDP) outcomes using a national inpatient database.
METHODS: The study used 2016-2020 NIS data. The study included 1577 distal pancreatic malignant tumor surgery patients. There were 530 Minimally Invasive and 1047 Open groups. Propensity

BACKGROUND: Diverse representation in clinical research is essential for equitable healthcare. Despite mandates from organizations like the NIH and ICMJE, race and gender remain underreported in surgical research, raising concerns about the generalizability of findings. This study examines demographic reporting trends in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and advanced endoscopy publications before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: A systematic review of Surgical Endoscopy, Journal of Robotic Surgery, and Surgical Innovation was conducted, analyzing articles published betwee

BACKGROUND: Transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) individuals comprise 0.5% to 0.6% of the U.S. population and face significant healthcare disparities, yet little is known about inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in this group. We aimed to characterize IBD prevalence, comorbidities, healthcare utilization, and the impact of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in TGNB individuals.
METHODS: Using TriNetX, we analyzed (1) IBD prevalence among TGNB adults, (2) comparisons of IBD patients who are and who are not TGNB, and (3) comparisons of TGNB IBD patients with and without HRT. Outcomes included demograp

OBJECTIVE: Early childhood health and economic burdens are disproportionately distributed across population groups. We examined the vulnerability-related (First Nations status and remoteness) disparities of early childhood healthcare costs from birth to age 5 years and quantified the contribution of adverse perinatal outcomes, such as preterm birth (PTB), small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and low birthweight, to these disparities in the Northern Territory (NT), Australia.
DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study of all singleton live births in the NT,

CONTEXT: Meningococcal ACWY conjugate vaccines (MenACWY) are recommended for all US adolescents. However, vaccine coverage is incomplete and varies by sociodemographic factors.
METHODS: We used publicly available data from the US 2022 National Immunization Survey-Teen (NIS-Teen), which includes both a survey of parents of 13-17-year-olds and that teen's provider(s) (analytic n = 15,489). We examine whether facility type of reporting provider (ie, public, private, etc.) was associated with receipt of MenACWY and whether this association varied by the MenACWY vaccination policy for the state in

OBJECTIVE: Adults with pediatric-onset spinal cord injury (SCI) require long-term care and demonstrate elevated risk of secondary health conditions and psychosocial challenges. Medical providers are typically found in more populous and wealthy areas, resulting in a relative lack of providers in rural areas, a discrepancy even more pronounced among specialty providers. As a result, those who reside in rural regions potentially have unmet medical needs, representing a significant public health concern. The purpose of this study was to assess differences between rural and urban-residing participa

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is a growing concern in the US, with 3.5 million people experiencing it annually and 600,000 on any given night. Homeless individuals face increased vulnerability to 30-day hospital readmissions and higher mortality rates, straining the healthcare system and exacerbating existing disparities. This study aims to inform neurosurgeons on evidence-based strategies to reduce readmission and mortality rates among homeless patients by reviewing the literature on the impact of medical respite on 30-day readmission rates. The study aims to gauge the efficacy of medical respite

OBJECTIVE: While prior studies showed lower socioeconomic status was associated with worse acute asthma exacerbations (AAE) and asthma-related emergency department/urgent care (ED/UC) visits, few have quantified contributions of risk factors. We aim to identify and quantify risk factors driving these disparities across levels of neighborhood deprivation.
METHODS: We conducted a cohort study of 79,562 adults with mild asthma in Kaiser Permanente Southern California, United States, during 2013-2018, with follow-up through 2019, comparing participants in Neighborhood Deprivation Index (NDI) quin

BACKGROUND: South Africa's divide between the public and private healthcare sectors has implications for healthcare access and quality of life (QoL) outcomes. This exploratory study aimed to identify the types of treatments used by people with Parkinson's disease (PWPD) in two different healthcare settings (public and private), and their perception of treatment satisfaction. Additionally, this study compared the QoL experienced between these healthcare settings, and investigated whether the number of treatments, internet access and income level were associated with QoL.
METHODS: Cross-section

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: At the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, all elective outpatient procedures were halted by Ohio public health authorities between March 2020 and June 2020, leading to limited screening colonoscopies. In this study, we studied the impact of COVID-19 on trends and disparities on screening colonoscopy use.
METHODS: We identified all patients who underwent colonoscopy at Cleveland Clinic Ohio facilities in 2019, 2020, and 2021 from July 1 to December 31 in each year. We then calculated rates of screening colonoscopy and factors associated with colonos
