PROBLEM: Middle school and adolescent populations demonstrate high rates of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, with young people in inner cities in the United States especially vulnerable. Teen births remain high, and youth are affected physically, mentally, socially, and economically.
METHODS: The Sex After Marriage primary prevention program, a federally funded, community-based abstinence education (CBAE) initiative, was implemented for 3 years in Philadelphia neighborhoods with vulnerable youth 12 to 18 years of age, supporting adults, healthcare professionals, and

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: People with spinal cord injury (SCI) have limited options for aerobic exercise. Existing options are often difficult to access, or they result in muscle imbalances that can eventually contribute to joint dysfunction. These difficulties can cause individuals to live a more sedentary lifestyle, putting them at greater risk for developing obesity and other cardiovascular disease risk factors. Therefore, a mode of exercise that allows people with SCI an affordable, accessible, and effective way to engage in cardiovascular exercise is needed.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The participa

BACKGROUND: People with mental illness in the United States are almost twice as likely to be obese compared with those without a mental illness. Lifestyle factors, such as poor dietary choices and physical inactivity, are often cited as causes of obesity in this population, which limits the response to the obesity epidemic primarily to behavioral change interventions. In response, this project is grounded in a human rights framework to assure that the people most affected by the problem are included in understanding and addressing the problem. We sought to investigate social and structural fac

Scientific evidence supports an interactive model of biopsychosocial influences on the etiology of eating disorders. New genome-wide association studies suggest underlying metabolic dysregulation in anorexia nervosa. Among the psychological factors, body dissatisfaction (IC) is the most consistent predictor, mainly in females. Low self-esteem, negative affect and internalization of the ideal of thinness predict IC. Certain personality traits and other individual factors such as a high body mass index, emotional problems and some metabolic and digestive diseases, social factors such as some spo

BACKGROUND: Approximately 4.5 million people live with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the United Kingdom. Evidence shows that structured education programs can improve glycemic control and reduce the risk of complications from T2DM, but they have low attendance rates. To widen access to T2DM structured education, National Health Service England commissioned a national rollout of Healthy Living, a digital self-management program.
OBJECTIVE: The objectives were to understand the barriers and enablers to adopting, implementing, and integrating Healthy Living into existing T2DM care pathways

BACKGROUND: Intensive lifestyle programs promoting weight loss have been shown to induce long-term remission of early Type 2 diabetes (T2D). Further, multicomponent weight loss interventions are recommended for all patients with obesity, but these programs are largely unavailable for people living in low-income and medically underserved areas in the United States (US) and little is known about the benefits, feasibility, and costs of such interventions in community settings.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility, preliminary effectiveness, and costs of a multicomponent intensive healthy eating

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that educational programs that impact well-being show the greatest promise for promoting behavioral change and providing incarcerated men and women with the skills necessary to reintegrate into communities successfully. The development of well-being is a key component of such educational programs, as it affords important protective factors in the face of stress and difficulty and improves individuals' chances of stable re-entry to their communities. The Urban Ministry Institute (TUMI) is a faith-based, seminary-level, higher-education program that enhances healthy

INTRODUCTION: Social determinants of health (SDOH) affect outcomes of people living with psychiatric disorders, including substance use disorders. As experts in medication optimization, pharmacists play a vital role in identifying and addressing medication-related problems associated with SDOH. However, there is a paucity of literature on how pharmacists can be part of the solution.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to provide a narrative review and commentary on the intersection between SDOH, medication-related outcomes in people living with psychiatric disorders, and the role of pha

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death globally. Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs' benefits are overall consensual; however, during exercise, progressive physiological effects have not been studied yet in cardiac patients. Our study aims to analyze physiological parameters of thermography, heart rate variability (HRV), blood pressure, central nervous system (CNS) fatigue, and cortical arousal in heart attack patients (HAP) who belong to CR programs of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and Moderate-intensity Continuous Training (MICT) compared to healthy particip

INTRODUCTION: Quetiapine is an oral atypical antipsychotic drug commonly used to treat a large number of neuropsychiatric disorders and conditions. However, a substantial number of patients who may benefit from treatment with quetiapine are unable to ingest quetiapine or other medications by mouth and thus require alternative routes of administration. There are currently no studies evaluating non-oral compounded dosage forms of quetiapine.
METHODS: We conducted a single-dose open-label crossover pharmacokinetic study in 10 healthy adults to determine whether quetiapine compounded as a rectal

OBJECTIVE: This study explores the association of Tai Chi and square dance with cognitive function and compares the effects of the two fitness programs on cognitive function in Chinese older adults.
METHODS: A total of 1732 older people (aged 60 years and over) met the inclusion criteria from the 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. Based on the frequency of participating in Tai Chi and square dance, older adults were divided into three groups: a Tai Chi group (n = 234), a square dance group (n = 345), and a control group (n = 1153). Cognitive function was measured using a modi

INTRODUCTION: Physical exercise (PE) is essential for alleviating the symptoms of sarcopenia. Low motivation is a major barrier to PE. Mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) has the potential to improve motivation. However, few studies have used a mindfulness-based PE (MBPE) intervention among older people with sarcopenia.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary effects of the MBPE program among community-dwelling older people with sarcopenia.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A two-arm pilot randomised controlled trial will be conducted to assess the feasibility, acceptabilit

BACKGROUND: While pharmacists have provided vaccinations to patients in the community pharmacy setting, pharmacist involvement within the medical office setting is not well documented in the literature. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists reports that ambulatory care pharmacists are screening for and administering vaccinations at a declining rate, despite standards of practice. Vaccination rates for adults 19-64 years of age remain low, based on Healthy People 2020 goals, putting them at risk for vaccine-preventable diseases.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to assess vaccin

Social networks play important roles in mental and physical health among the general population. Building healthier social networks might contribute to the development of self-sufficiency among people struggling to overcome homelessness and substance use disorders. In this study of homeless adults completing a job- and life-skills program (i.e., the Moving Ahead Program at St. Francis House, Boston), we prospectively examined changes in social network quality, size, and composition. Among the sample of participants (n = 150), we observed positive changes in social network quality over time. Ho

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Engagement in sport offers the potential for improved physical and psychological well-being and has been shown to be beneficial for promoting healthy aging. Opportunities for older adults to (re)engage with sport are limited by a paucity of age-appropriate introductory sports intervention programs. As such, the study evaluated the efficacy of a newly designed 8-week badminton training program (Shuttle Time for Seniors) on markers of healthy aging and the lived experiences of participation.
METHODS: Forty-three older adults assigned to a control (N = 20) or intervention

BACKGROUND: Haemoglobin genotype screening at prenatal care offers women an opportunity to be aware of their genotype, receive education on sickle cell disease (SCD) and may increase maternal demand for SCD newborn screening. In developed countries, most pregnant women who access prenatal care and deliver at the hospital receive haemoglobin genotype screening. In settings with low prenatal care attendance and low hospital deliveries, community-based screening may provide similar opportunity for pregnant women. We assessed the feasibility and acceptability of integrating haemoglobin genotype sc

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that adolescents aged 11-12 years routinely receive vaccines to prevent diseases, including human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cancers, pertussis, and meningococcal disease (1). To assess vaccination coverage among adolescents in the United States, CDC analyzed data collected regarding 21,875 adolescents through the 2015 National Immunization Survey-Teen (NIS-Teen).* During 2014-2015, coverage among adolescents aged 13-17 years increased for each HPV vaccine dose among males, including ≥1 HPV vaccine dose (from 41.7% to 49.8
