Effects of speech tracking method using hearing aids for hearing disorder in older people.

OBJECTIVES: Speech tracking is defined as a complex act or task of listening in which the learner tracks the speech heard and repeats it as accurately as possible while paying attention to incoming contextual information. This ability involves auditory input, speech output, repetition, and divided attention. In this small-scale study, we aimed to use a speech-tracking method to train older adults with hearing loss and examine its effects on hearing loss from multiple perspectives, including hearing handicap, frailty, and neuropsychological testing. METHODS: Auditory rehabilitation was provide

Hearing loss and brain disorders: A review of multiple pathologies.

Several causative factors are associated with hearing loss (HL) and brain disorders. However, there are many unidentified disease modifiers in these conditions. Our study summarised the most common brain disorders associated with HL and highlighted mechanisms of pathologies. We searched the literature for published articles on HL and brain disorders. Alzheimer's disease/dementia, Parkinson's disease, cognitive impairment, autism spectrum disorder, ataxia, epilepsy, stroke, and hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy majorly co-interact with HL. The estimated incidence rate was 113 per 10,000 person-y

Explainable AI-based clinical decision support system for hearing disorders.

In clinical system design, human-computer interaction and explainability are important topics of research. Clinical systems need to provide users with not only results but also an account of their behaviors. In this research, we propose a knowledge-based clinical decision support system (CDSS) for the diagnosis and therapy of hearing disorders, such as tinnitus, hyperacusis, and misophonia. Our prototype eTRT system offers an explainable output that we expect to increase its trustworthiness and acceptance in the clinical setting. Within this paper, we: (1) present the problem area of tinnitus

Reliability of Measures Intended to Assess Threshold-Independent Hearing Disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Recent animal studies have shown that noise exposure can cause cochlear synaptopathy without permanent threshold shift. Because the noise exposure preferentially damaged auditory nerve fibers that processed suprathreshold sounds (low-spontaneous rate fibers), it has been suggested that synaptopathy may underlie suprathreshold hearing deficits in humans. Recently, several researchers have suggested measures to identify the pathology or pathologies underlying suprathreshold hearing deficits in humans based on results from animal studies; however, the reliability of some of these meas

Incidence and relative risk of hearing disorders in professional musicians.

BACKGROUND: Hearing disorders have been associated with occupational exposure to music. Musicians may benefit from non-amplified and low-intensity music, but may also have high risks of music-induced hearing loss. AIMS: To compare the incidence of hearing loss (HL) and its subentities in professional musicians with that in the general population. METHODS: We performed a historical cohort study among insurants between 19 and 66 years who were employed subject to social insurance contributions. The study was conducted with data from three German statutory health insurance providers covering th

[Frequency of hearing disorders in children with langerhans' cell histiocytosis].

BACKGROUND: The aims of the study were to find out the frequency of hearing disorders in children with Langerhans' cell histiocytosis (LCH) and to find out possible risk factors for hearing disorders due to the disease itself and the therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 30 patients with LCH were examined audiologically by using standard audiometric procedures. In cases of central nervous system (CNS) lesions, brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA) was done additionally. A significant hearing disorder was defined as a hearing impairment affecting speech, thus being characterized by the followin

Ocular and optic nerve head ischemic disorders and hearing loss.

PURPOSE: To investigate in an exploratory study whether any evidence suggests that ophthalmic ischemic disorders, particularly of the optic nerve head, are associated with hearing loss. METHODS: We investigated prospectively 583 consecutive patients in eight primary ocular diagnostic groups for associated hearing loss: nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (n = 81), normal-tension glaucoma (n = 36), primary open-angle glaucoma (n = 138), other types of glaucoma (n = 142), ocular arterial occlusive disorders (n = 22), retinal vein occlusion (n = 89), ocular vasculitis (n = 42), and a

[Results of screening for hearing disorders using the Ewing test].

Late developments support that deaf children have an urgent need for rehabilitation and hence for early search for hearing defects. One of the modalities to achieve this goal is mass screening of populations. In Belgium the long established well-baby-clinics provide a commodity for these programs. As most infants attend regularly these clinics, it was evident to perform here the testing procedure. The Ewing-test was chosen as the tool for the screening. We started about 1980. In this discussion the statistics from 1984 to 1986 from one province (West-Vlaanderen) are used. It appeared that appr

[Examination of 1,300 children for incidence and therapy of hearing disorders in pediatric speech disorders].

This study presents the results on 1305 children with speech disorders. The examination includes ENT-inspection, audiometry, speech-evaluations and if required, psychological tests. In 48% we found hearing losses, most frequently in the age up to four years. In 95% hearing losses were fluctuating about 20 decibels, caused by malfunction of the tube or by adenoids, not even in autumn and winter, but also all the year. In this case, fluctuating hearing function reduces the total hearing input over the year. In only 5% we found cochlear hearing loss. In hearing impaired children speech developmen

Hearing Characteristics of Stroke Patients: Prevalence and Characteristics of Hearing Impairment and Auditory Processing Disorders in Stroke Patients.

BACKGROUND: Stroke survivors may suffer from a range of hearing impairments that may restrict their participation in postacute rehabilitation programs. Hearing impairment may have a significant impact on listening, linguistic skills, and overall communication of the affected stroke patient. However, no studies sought to systematically characterize auditory function of stroke patients in detail, to establish the different types of hearing impairments in this cohort of patients. Such information would be clinically useful in understanding and addressing the hearing needs of stroke survivors. PU

[Spatial hearing in elderly people with mild or moderate chronic sensorineural hearing loss and central auditory processing disorders.].

The ability to localize stationary sources of speech and music allows for the organization of auditory attention and promotes successful communication and learning, while the ability to localize technical devices, especially moving ones, is of fundamental importance for life safety and professional suitability in some specialties. The aim of the study was to assess the state of spatial hearing in elderly and senile patients with chronic sensorineural hearing loss and central auditory processing disorders. A total of 39 patients aged 69±9 years were examined in the Audiology Department of the C

The Natural History of Hearing Disorders in Asymptomatic Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection.

Background and Aim: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the main cause of congenital infection in developed countries leading to deafness but the burden of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in asymptomatic children remains incompletely characterized. Aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term audiological outcome in this group of patients. Methods: Consecutive neonates with congenital CMV infection were followed from 2002 to 2018. Patients were considered asymptomatic if free from any clinical and instrumental impairment at referral and underwent serial clinical exams, audiological evaluations and C

Neural crest contributions to the ear: Implications for congenital hearing disorders.

Congenital hearing disorders affect millions of children worldwide and can significantly impact acquisition of speech and language. Efforts to identify the developmental genetic etiologies of conductive and sensorineural hearing losses have revealed critical roles for cranial neural crest cells (NCCs) in ear development. Cranial NCCs contribute to all portions of the ear, and defects in neural crest development can lead to neurocristopathies associated with profound hearing loss. The molecular mechanisms governing the development of neural crest derivatives within the ear are partially underst
