Evaluation of hearing loss after failed neonatal hearing screening.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the causes of hearing loss found after failed universal newborn hearing screening and compared the results with the previously used behavioral observation test (Ewing/CAPAS). STUDY DESIGN: Hearing loss in neonates, born between September 1999 and October 2007 and referred to our center after failed screening, was determined by audiologic testing and physical examination. RESULTS: In 340 included neonates the results of hearing tests were as follows: normal hearing 21.2%, conductive hearing loss 20.3%, and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) 57.9%. Children referred from

Identification of neonatal hearing impairment: infants with hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: This article describes the audiologic findings and medical status of infants who were found to have hearing loss, detected as part of the Identification of Neonatal Hearing Impairment (INHI) project. In addition, the neonatal and maternal health variables for the group of infants who could not be tested with visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA) due to developmental and visual disability are presented. DESIGN: The overall goal of the INHI project was to evaluate the test performance of auditory brain stem response and evoked otoacoustic emission (OAE) tests given in the newborn per

Conductive hearing loss produces a reversible binaural hearing impairment.

Conductive hearing loss, produced by otitis media with effusion, is widespread in young children. However, little is known about its short- or long-term effects on hearing or the brain. To study the consequences of a conductive loss for the perception and processing of sounds, we plugged the left ear canal of ferrets for 7-15 months during either infancy or adulthood. Before or during plugging, the ferrets were trained to perform a binaural task requiring the detection of a 500 Hz tone, positioned 90 degrees to the right, that was masked by two sources of broad-band noise. In one condition ("c

[Hearing in old age. Hearing loss is never physiologic].

The common form of hardness of hearing seen in old age is not, in the first instance, due to physiological age-related changes as is, for example, presbyopia, but rather to a complex sensorineural pattern of injury. The underlying causes are not yet fully understood. Typical medical risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, etc. apparently play a smaller role than increasing environmental noise and modern life styles. The various forms of presbyacusis and their presentation in the pure tone audiogram are discussed.

Crossmodal plasticity in hearing loss.

Crossmodal plasticity is a textbook example of the ability of the brain to reorganize based on use. We review evidence from the auditory system showing that such reorganization has significant limits, is dependent on pre-existing circuitry and top-down interactions, and that extensive reorganization is often absent. We argue that the evidence does not support the hypothesis that crossmodal reorganization is responsible for closing critical periods in deafness, and crossmodal plasticity instead represents a neuronal process that is dynamically adaptable. We evaluate the evidence for crossmodal

Syndromic Hearing Loss in Children.

Pattern recognition of specific temporal bone radiological phenotypes, in association with abnormalities in other organ systems, is critical in the diagnosis and management of syndromic causes of hearing loss. Several recent publications have demonstrated the presence of specific radiological appearances, allowing precise genetic and/or syndromic diagnosis, in the right clinical context. This review article aims to provide an extensive but practical guide to the radiologist dealing with syndromic causes of hearing loss.

Diabetes mellitus and hearing loss.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major disease threatening human health and its incidence is increasing year on year. As a chronic complication of DM, hearing loss mostly occurs undetectably. However, the mechanism of this diabetes-related hearing loss (DRHL) remains unclear and there is no effective clinical treatment. Studies of animal or human pathology show that DM causes damage to the blood vessels, spiral ganglion neurons, afferent nerve fibers, the organ of Corti, and the stria vascularis of the inner ear. In recent years, more advances in pathological research have revealed the possible mec

Conductive Hearing Loss in Children.

A variety of congenital and acquired disorders result in pediatric conductive hearing loss. Malformations of the external auditory canal are invariably associated with malformations of the middle ear space and ossicles. Isolated ossicular malformations are uncommon. Syndromes associated with external and middle ear malformations are frequently associated with abnormal development of first and second pharyngeal arch derivatives. Chronic inflammatory disorders include cholesteatoma, cholesterol granuloma, and tympanosclerosis.

Genetics of Childhood Hearing Loss.

Compelling evidence indicates that some newborns harboring genetic variants associated with hearing loss might not be identified by current physiologic newborn hearing screening (NBHS) rendering current NBHS protocols suboptimal. Incorporating genomic sequencing into NBHS would improve clinical diagnosis and decrease time to early intervention efforts.

[Presbycusis - Age Related Hearing Loss].

Presbycusis or age related hearing loss can be defined as a progressive, bilateral and symmetrical sensorineural hearing loss due to age related degeneration of inner ear structures. It can be considered a multifactorial complex disorder with environmental and genetic factors. The molecular, electrophysiological and histological damage at different levels of the inner ear cause a progressive hearing loss, which usually affects the high frequencies of hearing. The resulting poor speech recognition has a negative impact on cognitive, emotional and social function in older adults. Recent investig

Pediatric Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is defined as sudden unilateral or bilateral sensorineural hearing loss with at least 30 dB decrease in threshold in 3 contiguous test frequencies occurring over 72 hours or less. It is rare among children. The mechanism of the process and prognosis of the disorder remains unclear. The current incidence of sudden sensorineural hearing loss among pediatric population is unknown. The authors carried out a retrospective chart analysis of patients under 15 years of age from 2004 to 2015, who consulted to the Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Department of Inonu

[Hereditary macrothrombocytopenia and hearing loss].

We describe an autosomal dominant hereditary thrombocytopenia syndrome caused by a defect in the MYH9 gene. Of our three patients, all have thrombocytopenia from birth, and their thrombocytes are large in size. The hemorrhagic tendency caused by thrombocytopenia is often mild. Approximately 60% of the patients develop sensorineural hearing loss and approx. 30% develop renal insufficiency that frequently progresses to require hemodialysis. It is of particular importance to recognize the thrombocytopenia as being hereditary and permanent in order to save the patients from useless and harmful the

Hearing loss in shipyard employees.

BACKGROUND: Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is one of the most prevalent occupational illnesses, with a higher incidence in the heavy industry. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of NIHL in Greece and explore its correlations with other job and individual-related factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Questionnaires were administered, and audiograms were conducted to 757 employees of a shipyard company in Greece, both white- and blue-collar, during the period 2006-2009. A modification of the 1979' equation of the American Academy of Otolaryngology was
