Heart rate and heart rate variability in pregnant warmblood and Shetland mares as well as their fetuses.

Heart rate (HR) is an important parameter of fetal well-being. In horses, HR and heart rate variability (HRV) can be determined by fetomaternal electrocardiography (ECG) from mid-pregnancy to foaling. Normal values for physiological parameters in larger breeds are often used as reference values in ponies. However, HR increases with decreasing size of the animal and in ponies is higher than in warmblood horses. It is not known if fetal HR is affected by breed and if values obtained in larger breeds can be used to assess Shetland fetuses. We have determined fetomaternal beat-to-beat (RR) interva

Brain activation associated with changes in heart rate, heart rate variability, and plasma catecholamines during rectal distention.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that gut stimulation provokes autonomic arousal via activation of regional cerebral cortices. How the human brain processes interoceptive signals and forms initial autonomic arousal is one of the key questions to be answered in research on emotion. METHODS: Twelve healthy males participated in this study. A barostat bag was inserted in the rectum and intermittently inflated with 0, 20, or 40 mm Hg at random for 80 seconds. H(2)(15)O positron emission tomography (PET) of the brain, electrocardiography, and blood sampling for catecholamines were performed. Chan

Vagally mediated heart rate variability and heart rate entropy as predictors of treatment outcome in flight phobia.

In the present study a computer-assisted exposure-based treatment was applied to 54 flight phobics and the predictive role of vagally mediated heart rate (HR) variability (high frequency, 0.15-0.4 Hz band power) and heart rate entropy (HR time series sample entropy) on treatment outcome was investigated. Both physiological measures were taken under controlled breathing at 0.2 Hz and during exposure to a fearful sequence of audiovisual stimuli. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to assess the predictive power of these variables in these conditions on treatment self-report measures

Implication of heart rate optimization in patients with heart failure.

Prognostic impact of heart rate reduction therapy using ivabradine, a selective inhibitor of If channel that purely reduces heart rate, in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and sinus tachycardia has been demonstrated. However, ideal heart rate remains unknown. We experienced an 80-year-old woman with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction who was hospitalized due to congestive heart failure. Following the ivabradine administration that decreased her heart rate from 100 bpm down to around 60 bpm, the "overlap" between E-wave and A-wave in the trans-mitral Doppler ec

Aldosterone blockade reduces vascular collagen turnover, improves heart rate variability and reduces early morning rise in heart rate in heart failure patients.

BACKGROUND: Experimental data suggest that aldosterone has harmful effects promoting myocardial fibrosis and disturbing autonomic balance. There has been no evidence of these potential effects in intact man. METHODS AND RESULTS: We report the findings in 31 patients with stable chronic heart failure (CHF) who were treated with spironolactone (50-100 mg/day) or placebo in addition to diuretics and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition. In a controlled randomised double-blind study, we found that spironolactone treatment reduced circulating levels of procollagen type III N-terminal ami

Heart rate variability and heart rate in a sample of medicated and unmedicated adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Alterations in autonomic nervous system activity - measured by heart rate variability (HRV) and heart rate (HR) - have been proposed as a relevant biopsychological mechanism in several psychiatric disorders. However, only few studies have examined these parameters in OCD, and evidence from pediatric samples is particularly limited. The aim of this study was to investigate autonomic activity in pediatric OCD. METHODS: A five minute resting state electrocardiogram was recorded in adolescents with OCD (n = 64) and age- and IQ-matched healthy controls (HC, n = 52). Autonomic activity w

Heart rate and heart rate variability in obsessive-compulsive disorder: Evidence from patients and unaffected first-degree relatives.

Altered heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) are common observations in psychiatric disorders. Yet, few studies have examined these cardiac measures in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The current study aimed to investigate HR and HRV, indexed by the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) and further time domain indices, as putative biological characteristics of OCD. Electrocardiogram was recorded during a five-minute resting state. Group differences between patients with OCD (n = 96), healthy participants (n = 112), and unaffected first-degree relatives of patients

Recovery of heart rate and heart rate variability after a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test in novice female runners.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown delayed cardiac vagal reactivation after high-intensity endurance exercise when estimated with heart rate variability (HRV). However, the recovery dynamics of RR intervals (RRI) and HRV after a maximal incremental exercise test have been studied less in non-athletic population and especially in females. The main aim of the study was to examine the recovery dynamics of RRI and HRV immediately after a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) in adult females. METHODS: Twenty-eight healthy, novice recreational female runners (33.7 ± 4.2 years) were select

Sex differences in heart rate and heart rate variability responses to transcutaneous auricular vagal nerve stimulation in rats.

The identification of reliable biomarkers of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) responsiveness is a key challenge both at the clinical and preclinical level. Vagally-mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV), a surrogate measure of cardiac vagal efferent activity, is an ideal candidate. Yet, the effects of taVNS on vmHRV remain inconclusive, likely due to the high degree of heterogeneity in stimulation protocols (e.g., taVNS parameters and side of the ear target), and little consideration of contributing factors such as sex differences. This study investigates sex differenc

Heart rate and high frequency heart rate variability during stress as biomarker for clinical depression. A systematic review.

The interaction of physical and mental vulnerability and environmental constraints is thought to foster the development of psychiatric disorders such as major depressive disorder (MDD). A central factor in the development of psychopathology is mental stress. Despite some evidence for parasympathetic withdrawal and sympathetic overactivity in MDD, the psychophysiological response to stress in depression is not clear-cut. Given the growing interest in heart rate and heart rate variability as indicators for remote monitoring of patients, it is important to understand how patients with MDD react t

Intrinsic heart rate response as a predictor of rate-adaptive pacing benefit.

OBJECTIVE: More than half of the pacemaker systems now being implanted can be rate adaptively paced. Our objective was to determine which patients benefit from rate-adaptive pacing in terms of improvement in maximum performance and aerobic capacity. METHODS: Thirty patients with implanted accelerometer-driven, rate-adaptive pacemakers underwent a standardized, ergospirometrically and maximally symptoms = limited cardiopulmonary exercise (CPX) stress test with both rate-adaptive and fixed-rate stimulation in a randomized order. The patients were divided into three groups depending on the intri

Temporal dissociation between heart rate recovery and heart rate variability recovery after submaximal exercise in healthy older adults.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate recovery (HRR) is commonly used to evaluate post-exercise recovery. However, it might not fully represent the recovery of heart rate variability-derived autonomic indices in older adults. This study examined whether heart rate and heart rate variability-derived indices of cardiac autonomic modulation show divergent recovery patterns following submaximal exercise in healthy older adults. METHODS: Fifty-eight community-dwelling adults aged 60-81 years completed a 5-minute submaximal step test following a 10-minute seated resting period. Heart rate (HR) and heart rate vari

TSH index and 24-hour mean heart rate in euthyroid adults: opposing FT3 and heart rate variability components.

BACKGROUND: Central thyroid homeostasis may contribute to variation in heart rate even within the euthyroid range, but the relative contributions of endocrine and autonomic correlates remain uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between the TSH index (TSHI) and 24-hour mean heart rate and to explore whether this association could be statistically decomposed into components involving free triiodothyronine (FT3) and heart rate variability. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted as a secondary analysis of a previously described cohort. The cohort comprised 55

Impedance-Derived Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability from tDCS Output Voltage: Sensorless Physiological Monitoring During Electrical Neuromodulation.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) devices adjust output voltage to maintain the target current despite varying impedance. Pulsatile blood flow produces beat-synchronous changes in tissue impedance. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether impedance-derived heart rate (IHR), heart rate variability (IHRV), and respiration (IDR) can be estimated from tDCS output voltage without additional physiological sensors. METHODS: A custom analog front-end acquires the tDCS output voltage across its full dynamic DC range and superimposed AC fluctuations with high precision. Beats detected

Apparent reduction in heart rate during oviposition revealed by non-invasive heart rate monitoring of gravid loggerhead turtles.

Reproductive processes place significant physiological demands on animals, often accompanied by hormonal and neural changes. In this study, we examined changes in heart rate of gravid loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) during nesting activities on the beach, especially during egg-laying phase. To examine heart rate throughout the nesting activities, non-invasive electrocardiogram (ECG) loggers and accelerometers were deployed on five gravid females. Heart rate increased markedly upon beach landing and remained elevated during most nesting phases. However, a significant decrease in heart rate

The Effects of Caffeine on Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability at Rest and During Submaximal Cycling Exercise.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of caffeine on heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV) at rest and during submaximal exercise. Using a balanced, double-blind, randomized, crossover design, 16 male cyclists (age: 37 ± 9 years; V˙O2max: 4.44 ± 0.67 L·min-1) completed three trials in an air-conditioned laboratory. In Trial 1, cyclists completed two incremental cycling tests to establish the V˙O2-power output relationship and V˙O2max. In trials 2 and 3, cyclists were evaluated for heart rate and HRV at rest, after which they ingested a capsule containing 5 mg·kg-1 of caffe

Use of Deep Learning to Detect the Maternal Heart Rate and False Signals on Fetal Heart Rate Recordings.

We have developed deep learning models for automatic identification of the maternal heart rate (MHR) and, more generally, false signals (FSs) on fetal heart rate (FHR) recordings. The models can be used to preprocess FHR data prior to automated analysis or as a clinical alert system to assist the practitioner. Three models were developed and used to detect (i) FSs on the MHR channel (the FSMHR model), (ii) the MHR and FSs on the Doppler FHR sensor (the FSDop model), and (iii) FSs on the scalp ECG channel (the FSScalp model). The FSDop model was the most useful because FSs are far more frequent

Application and Clinical Analysis of Remote Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring Platform in Continuous Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring Images.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Fetal heart sound is an important part of fetal monitoring and has attracted extensive research and attention from scholars at home and abroad in recent years. The fetal heart rate, extracted from the fetal heart sound signal, is one of the important indicators that reflect the health of the fetus in the womb. In this study, a maternal-fetal Holter monitor based on f ECG technology was used to collect maternal heart rate, fetal heart rate, and uterine contractions signals, isolate the fetal heart rate, and design an algorithm to extract the fetal heart rate baseline, acceleration, variation, w

Early sinusoidal heart rate patterns and heart rate variability to assess hypoxia-ischaemia in near-term fetal sheep.

KEY POINTS: •Therapeutic hypothermia needs to be started as early as possible in the first 6 h after acute injury caused by hypoxia-ischaemia (HI), but the severity and timing of HI are often unclear. In this study we evaluated whether measures of heart rate variability (HRV) might provide early biomarkers of HI. •The duration but not magnitude of suppression of HRV power and conversely increased sample entropy of the heart rate were associated with severity of HI, such that changes in the first 3 h did not discriminate between groups. •Relative changes in HRV power bands showed different patt
