Accuracy and User Acceptability of 24-hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring by a Prototype Cuffless Multi-Sensor Device Compared to a Conventional Oscillometric Device.

OBJECTIVE: 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (24ABPM) is state of the art in out-of-office blood pressure (BP) monitoring. Due to discomfort and technical limitations related to cuff-based 24ABPM devices, methods for non-invasive and continuous estimation of BP without the need for a cuff have gained interest. The main aims of the present study were to compare accuracy of a pulse arrival time (PAT) based BP-model and user acceptability of a prototype cuffless multi-sensor device (cuffless device), developed by Aidee Health AS, with a conventional cuff-based oscillometric device (Ref

Real-Time Monitoring of Blood Pressure Using Digitalized Pulse Arrival Time Calculation Technology for Prompt Detection of Sudden Hypertensive Episodes During Laryngeal Microsurgery: Retrospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Laryngeal microsurgery (LMS) is often accompanied by a sudden increase in blood pressure (BP) during surgery because of stimulation around the larynx. This sudden change in the hemodynamic status is not immediately reflected in a casual cuff-type measurement that takes intermittent readings every 3 to 5 min. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the potential of pulse arrival time (PAT) as a marker for a BP surge, which usually occurs in patients undergoing LMS. METHODS: Intermittent measurements of BP and electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals were rec

Acute Effects of Exercise on Blood Pressure: A Meta-Analytic Investigation.

Hypertension affects 25% of the world's population and is considered a risk factor for cardiovascular disorders and other diseases. The aim of this study was to examine the evidence regarding the acute effect of exercise on blood pressure (BP) using meta-analytic measures. Sixty-five studies were compared using effect sizes (ES), and heterogeneity and Z tests to determine whether the ES were different from zero. The mean corrected global ES for exercise conditions were -0.56 (-4.80 mmHg) for systolic BP (sBP) and -0.44 (-3.19 mmHg) for diastolic BP (dBP; z ≠ 0 for all; p < 0.05). The reduction

Epidemiological study of blood pressure in domestic dogs.

Previous experience has shown that a non-invasive (indirect) technique using an oscillometric monitor in conjunction with a tail cuff makes routine clinical blood pressure measurement practicable in dogs. The relationship between indirect and direct readings has been evaluated in both anaesthetised and conscious dogs (Bodey and others 1994, 1996). In this study, more than 2000 pressure measurements were taken from 1903 dogs. It was found that systolic is the most variable pressure parameter and that it depends on age, breed, sex, temperament, disease state, exercise regime and, to a minor exte

Compensatory adaptation of the heart to chronic rate overload: increase in calcium transport ATPase activity of myocardial sarcoplasmic reticulum.

This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that a compensatory response of the heart to a chronic and continuous, metabolic and heart rate overload was an increase in the calcium sequestering activity of the myocardial sarcoplasmic reticulum. Calcium sequestering activity was estimated by determination of the calcium-dependent ATPase (Ca2+-ATPase) activity of isolated microsomes. Chronic rate overload was modelled by comparing: dysthyroid and control rats; control swine and swine with implanted cardiac pacemakers set at 180 beats/min; and different species of mammals with widely differen

[Clinical symptoms and the diagnosis of the hyperkinetic cardiac syndrome].

The authors examined 40 patients with the hyperkinetic syndrome (HS) who underwent thorough clinical and instrumental examination including ECG, PCG, bicycle ergometry, hyperventilation and orthostatic tests, and determination of the central hemodynamic indices by echocardiography and the rate heart indices in dopplercardiography. The great diagnostic possibilities of doppler-cardiography are demonstrated. The diagnostic criteria of HS are suggested and general recommendations for treatment are given.

Arm position is important for blood pressure measurement.

AIM: To test the effect of positioning the arm on the arm-rest of a common chair, below the officially recommended right atrial level, on the blood pressure (BP) readings in a group of out-patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A group of 69 patients (58 hypertensives; 39 males; mean +/- s.d. age 54.1 +/- 16.0 years) participated in the present study. BP and heart rate values obtained in each of the following two positions were compared: (1) sitting with the arms supported on the arm-rests of the chair and (2) sitting with the arms supported at the level of the mid-sternum (the approximation of the

Blood pressure during normal daily activities, sleep, and exercise. Comparison of values in normal and hypertensive subjects.

Blood pressure (BP) readings were taken every 15 minutes using a noninvasive ambulatory BP recorder during 24 hours in 25 subjects with normal BP, 25 with borderline hypertension, and 25 with established essential hypertension. Readings were analyzed for four situations: (1) physician's office, (2) work, (3) at home, and (4) asleep. Treadmill exercise tests were also performed on a separate occasion with the Bruce protocol. The 24-hour recording in all three groups showed the highest BPs at work and the lowest during sleep. The situational BP changes were generally similar, but both hypertensi

Comparison between heart rate variability and recovery in ischemic patients.

Both heart variability (HRV) and heart rate recovery (HRR) after exercise are considered to reflect the sympathetic-vagal balance and low values of them have negative prognostic significance, especially in ischemic patients. The main goal of the research was to establish if there is a correlation between HRR and HRV in ischemic patients and if interchangeability between them is possible. There were studied 63 patients with ischemic heart disease: old myocardial infarction, stable angina. unstable angina and silent ischemia. All patients performed exercise stress testing, the heart rate recover

Instantaneous and averaged heart rate profiles: Developing strategies for programming pacing rates in dogs.

Pacemakers use heart rate histograms (% beats) and sensor indicated rate histograms (% time) to illustrate rate distributions. When programmed to the rate adaptive modes, these data are used to determine the appropriateness of rate response to activity. These histograms are generated from instantaneous heart rate calculations. In humans, such data are compared to known histographic rate profiles. Such rate profiles during 24 h in the dog are not available. Moreover, data representation differ between Holter monitoring and pacemakers making comparisons challenging. The rate distribution in dogs

Severity of obstructive sleep apnea is associated with the nocturnal fluctuation of pulse rate, but not with that of blood pressure, in older hypertensive patients receiving calcium channel blockers.

AIM: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with increased variability in nocturnal blood pressure (BP). Calcium channel blockers (CCB) are superior to other classes of antihypertensives in decreasing BP variability. We investigated whether OSA severity is associated with nocturnal BP variability in older hypertensive patients treated with CCB. METHODS: We measured home systolic and diastolic BP and pulse rate (PR) automatically during sleep at an interval of an hour once a week using an electronic sphygmomanometer in 29 hypertensive patients (aged ≥65 years) receiving CCB. We calculated

[Heart rate and refractoriness of accessory A-V- pathways (author's transl)].

In 20 patients with WPW-syndrome, the effective refractory periods of accessory A-V conduction were measured by programmed atrial stimulation during His-bundle electrography. The effects of basic heart rate on this parameter were evaluated. Three groups of patients were distinguished: A) The effective refractory periods of accessory A-V conduction were clearly longer than the effective refractory periods of the right atrium in 12 patients. In these patients, acceleration of heart rate shortened the effective refractory period of accessory A-V conduction. Refractoriness of accessory A-V conduct

Effect of beta-blockade on baroreflex sensitivity and cardiovascular autonomic function tests in patients with coronary artery disease.

We wished to assess the effects of beta-blockade on baroreflex sensitivity and standard tests of integrity of autonomic nervous function in patients with coronary artery disease, and to determine whether the effects of lipophilic (metoprolol) and hydrophilic (atenolol) beta-blockers differ. Beta-blocking drugs increase spontaneous heart rate variability in healthy subjects and in patients with coronary heart disease, but little is known about their effects on baroreflex sensitivity and heart-rate based tests of autonomic integrity. [Coronary reserve determination by intracoronary papaverine: effects of various doses on coronary circulation and hemodynamics].

In 40 male coronary patients during heart catheterization the coronary flow reserve was investigated by continuous thermodilution in the coronary sinus after intracoronary papaverine application. Simultaneously a number of heart function parameters were recorded. Already the lowest dosage of papaverine (5 mg) was able to induce a maximal flow acceleration. Higher dosages were accompanied with haemodynamic side effects (increase of heart rate and left ventricular end-diastolic pressure, decrease of left ventricular systolic pressure, appearance of myocardial ischemia) without further increase o

Evaluation of fetal and neonatal acid-base status.

Determination of fetal acid-base status, either at birth, intrapartum, or antepartum, is the gold standard for the diagnosis of fetal asphyxia. Indirect methods such as Apgar scores and fetal heart rate monitoring show at best only minimal correlation. It is evident that intrauterine hypoxia is a rare cause of central nervous system injury, and the finding of a normal acid-base status at birth should lead the clinician to search for other causes of central nervous system injury or birth depression. A combination of techniques including fetal acid-base assessment, electronic fetal heart rate mo

Effects of sedation with dexmedetomidine and buprenorphine on echocardiographic variables, blood pressure and heart rate in healthy cats.

Objectives Sedative agents are occasionally used to enable echocardiographic examination when screening cats for heart disease, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Owing to their haemodynamic effects, sedative agents may alter echocardiographic measurements. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of the sedative combination dexmedetomidine and buprenorphine on echocardiographic variables, blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) in healthy cats. Methods Fifty healthy, client-owned cats were prospectively recruited and included after physical examination. Cats were sedated intra

Resting high frequency heart rate variability selectively predicts cooperative behavior.

This study explores whether the vagal connection between the heart and the brain is involved in prosocial behaviors. The Polyvagal Theory postulates that vagal activity underlies prosocial tendencies. Even if several results suggest that vagal activity is associated with prosocial behaviors, none of them used behavioral measures of prosociality to establish this relationship. We recorded the resting state vagal activity (reflected by High Frequency Heart Rate Variability, HF-HRV) of 48 (42 suitale for analysis) healthy human adults and measured their level of cooperation during a hawk-dove gam
