Mitral valve prolapse and psychiatric complications: a case report.

This case study describes a 9-year-old-girl presenting with symptoms of anxiety and depression who was found to have mitral valve prolapse syndrome. The relationship of mitral valve prolapse and anxiety and depression has been studied and a review of the literature is presented. The family history of heart and psychiatric problems is explored. The importance of the bio-psycho-social approach is stressed as well as the suggestion that mitral valve prolapse be included as part of the differential diagnosis for anxiety.

Arrhythmic mitral valve prolapse: prevalence, characteristics, and high-risk features in children and adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Arrhythmic mitral valve prolapse is a rare yet potentially fatal syndrome. Recently, high-risk markers for malignant arrhythmias have been identified in adults with mitral valve prolapse, and a risk stratification scheme has been proposed. Little is known about the prevalence of arrhythmic mitral valve prolapse, the characteristics of the syndrome, and risk markers in children and young adults. METHODS: A database of a high-volume, tertiary congenital heart defects department was searched to identify all patients with MVP between 2018 and 2025 (8 years). Patients' characteristic

Mitral valve prolapse and joint hypermobility: evidence for a systemic connective tissue abnormality?

Clinical evidence for an abnormally of extracardiac connective tissue was sought in 21 patients with idiopathic mitral valve prolapse and was compared to that in 21 matched controls. The incidence of rheumatic and orthopaedic complaints and the prevalence of hypermobile joints, Marfanoid habitus, and skeletal deformity were compared in the 2 groups. Skin thickness and elasticity were measured, and the mean values in the 2 groups were compared. hypermobile joints were significantly commoner in patients with mitral valve prolapse. Easy bruising was reported significantly more commonly by patient

Familial mitral valve prolapse and myotonic dystrophy.

When a patient with mitral valve prolapse was found to have myotonic dystrophy, his family was studied to ascertain the occurrence of these abnormalities. Of 25 relatives screened, 8 had evidence of both myotonic dystrophy and mitral valve prolapse and 2 had evidence of myotonic dystrophy alone. Thirteen patients had evidence of neither condition and 1 had mitral valve prolapse alone. The association of these two conditions within a family has not previously been observed and valvular heart disease has not been recognized in myotonic dystrophy. This association should be looked for in other pa

[Mitral valve prolapse and parasystolic ventricular tachycardia: an unusual association].

Ventricular arrhythmias are common in patients with mitral valve prolapse. Conversely, parasystolic ventricular tachycardia is an uncommon arrhythmia that can be observed independent of preexisting heart disease. We report the case of an otherwise healthy 42-year-old woman with both mitral valve prolapse and parasystolic ventricular tachycardia.

Mitral valve prolapse due to coronary artery disease.

Controversy exists concerning the etiologic role of coronary artery disease in the prolapsing mitral valve leaflet syndrome. A 35 year old man with progressive coronary artery disease is described. Auscultation before and after his first myocardial infarction revealed only a fourth heart sound; subsequently left ventricular cineangiography demonstrated normal anatomy and function of the mitral valve, despite extensive wall motion abnormalities. Six months later he experienced another myocardial infarction after which the typical mid-systolic click, late systolic murmur of mitral valve prolapse

Transapical Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) of the mitral valve using the V-Clamp system - A promising approach for minimally invasive cardiology in veterinary and experimental human medicine.

Mitral valve (MV) regurgitation (MVR) is mainly associated with mitral valve leaflet prolapse. The leading cause of MV leaflet prolapse is degeneration of the mitral valve leaflets or functional MVR. Until recently, there has been a scarcity of surgical options for minimally invasive mitral valve repair in dogs. In contrast, humans often have forms of MVR that do not qualify for conventional heart surgery or existing minimally invasive mitral valve repair methods. Transapical Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) of the MV is an innovative new method that uses special clips that are inserte

[Ventricular function in mitral valve prolapse: effects of beta adrenergic blockers with and without intrinsic sympathomimetic activity].

A corollary of the "cardiomyopathy therapy" implies that mitral valve prolapse may cause intrinsic myocardial depression. The impairment of ventricular function may not be detected in basal conditions, but could be unmasked by superimposing depressant factors. The use of beta-blockers constitutes the first choice treatment for the symptomatic management of patients with mitral valve prolapse. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that myocardial depression could be shown during beta-blockade in the uncomplicated primary form of mitral valve prolapse. The results of echocardiographic and radionuc

[Left ventricular hemodynamics at rest and during exercise in patients with idiopathic mitral valve prolapse syndrome (author's transl)].

Idiopathic Mitral Valve Prolapse has been regarded by some authors as a primary cardiomyopathy. To determine, if left ventricular hemodynamics at rest and during exercise are impaired, 20 young symptomatic patients with idiopathic mitral valve prolapse, proven by echo- and phonocardiography, without coronary artery disease or severe mitral regurgitation, underwent supine bicycle exercise stress testing. Pulmonary artery pressure, central venous oxygen saturation and cardiac index as well as heart rate were measured with a Swan-Ganz thermodilution catheter and the results compared with those of

[Markers of connective tissue dysplasia in patients with idiopathic atrioventricular valve prolapse and anomalously sited chordae tendineae].

Phenotype was investigated in 86 patients with idiopathic prolapses of atrioventricular valves and in 21 patients with displaced chordae. 10 and 4 markers of connective tissue dysplasia were distinguished for patients with the prolapses and anomalous chordae, respectively. For patients with dysplasia of connective tissue of the heart a modified version of phenotypical length is proposed: norm-anomalous chordae--prolapse of the 1st degree--prolapse of the 2nd degree. For patients with 3 and more markers echo-CG registration is advisable to reject mitral and/or tricuspid valves.

Autonomic dysfunction in women with mitral valve prolapse syndrome.

Autonomic cardiovascular regulation was evaluated in 35 women, 19 with mitral valve prolapse and 16 healthy controls. Heart rate responses to the diving reflex and to phenylephrine infusion were diminished in patients. Noninvasive measures of cardiac output, heart rate, blood pressure, forearm flow and leg volume during lower body negative pressure (LBNP) showed that patients had less lower extremity pooling of blood and had lower forearm conductance. Blood pressures during LBNP rose or remained unchanged despite decreases in cardiac output of 20--25%. These data indicate that mitral valve pro

Mitral valve prolapse: an overview.

Since its original description by Barlow over a quarter of a century ago, mitral valve prolapse has become one of the commonest heart diseases around the world. It is commoner in women than men, in thinner than heavier subjects, and in younger than older persons. A unifying concept of a valvular-ventricular disproportion serves to explain the various conditions in which mitral valve prolapse occurs. The etiology of chest pain which is the most frequent symptom that brings the patient with mitral valve prolapse to a physician is multifactorial. Diagnosis of mitral valve prolapse is based on cli

Specificity of persistence of antibody to the streptococcal group A carbohydrate in rheumatic valvular heart disease.

The specificity of the persistence of antibody to the streptococcal group A carbohydrate for mitral valve disease induced by rheumatic fever was examined. Levels of the antibody were determined in serum samples of 30 patients with rheumatic mitral insufficiency, 30 patients with mitral valve prolapse, and an equal number of normal individuals and patients with congenital heart disease. Antistreptolysin titers and anti-deoxyribonuclease B titers were also assayed in all sera. There were no differences in the incidence of elevated antibody titers or in the geometric means of the antibody titers

Floppy mitral valve/mitral valve prolapse/mitral valvular regurgitation: effects on the circulation.

The floppy mitral valve prolapses into the left atrium in such a dynamic manner that the prolapsing floppy mitral valve becomes a space-occupying lesion within the left atrium. A significant result of the floppy mitral valve prolapsing into the left atrium during left ventricular systole is the development of a "third chamber" located between the mitral annulus and the prolapsing mitral valve leaflets. Since the blood in the third chamber does not contribute to forward stroke volume, the third chamber may have significant effects on stroke volume and cardiac output. The floppy mitral valve/mit

To determine factors influencing the strength of association between mitral valve prolapse and mitral regurgitation, ruptured chordae tendineae, and infective endocarditis, the prevalence of mitral prolapse in patients with disease was compared with both clinical and population control groups. The prevalence of mitral valve prolapse was 4 percent among population and clinical control groups (eight of 196 and 84 of 2,146, respectively) and was significantly higher (p less than 0.001) in patients with endocarditis (11 of 67, 16 percent), mitral regurgitation (17 of 31, 55 percent, and ruptured c

Increased plasma catecholamine levels in patients with symptomatic mitral valve prolapse.

Total plasma catecholamine levels, plasma norepinephrine levels, heart rate, and systolic and diastolic pressures were measured in 15 symptomatic patients with mitral valve prolapse and in 19 normal subjects in supine baseline conditions and in a standing position. In the 15 symptomatic patients, total plasma catecholamine levels and plasma norepinephrine levels were significantly elevated in both positions, and heart rate was lower than in normal subjects in the supine position but returned to normal in the upright position. Thus, symptomatic patients with mitral valve prolapse demonstrate in

Aborted sudden cardiac death due to ventricular fibrillation in a female patient with mitral valve prolapse.

BACKGROUND: Mitral valve prolapse is the most frequent valvular defect associated with a wide range of electro-hemodynamic abnormalities, leading to heart failure, arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Mitral valve prolapse, first described from Barlow in the 1960s, is defined as displacement of mitral leaflet tissue into the left atrium past the mitral annular plane during systole. The correlation between mitral valve prolapse and sudden cardiac death has been investigated and clarified by various studies in recent years. However, identifying patients at risk and applying measures to prevent

Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve and prolapse of the mitral valve.

The hearts from 10 necropsy patients with Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve were examined for abnormalities of the mitral valve. Five patients were under 1 year of age and none had an abnormal mitral valve. The other five patients were ages 18 to 72 years (mean 36 years); all had focal fibrous thickening of the mitral leaflets and three had prolapse of one or both mitral leaflets. Only one of the three patients with mitral valve prolapse had an atrial septal defect (secundum type), indicating that the association of mitral valve prolapse with Ebstein's anomaly is not due to the presence

Mitral valve prolapse.

Mitral valve prolapse, diagnosed by auscultation of typical midsystolic clicks and late systolic murmurs or by echocardiographic demonstration of definite systolic protrusion of the mitral leaflets into the left atrium, is the commonest human abnormality of heart valves, affecting roughly 4 per cent of the population. The most important clinical features of mitral valve prolapse include palpitations and small but definite risks of infective endocarditis or significant mitral regurgitation in middle age, or later. Current evidence suggests that mitral prolapse is due to an inherited abnormality

Different mechanisms of mitral regurgitation in acute and chronic forms of coronary heart disease.

Contradictory two-dimensional echocardiographic findings have been reported in relation to the role of prolapse of the mitral valve and lack of systolic leaflet coaptation in mitral regurgitation secondary to coronary heart disease. A prospective study of 22 patients with chronic coronary heart disease and mitral regurgitation showed the following: Inferior akinesia was detected in 14 (64%), fibrosis of the postero-medial papillary muscle in 10 (45%), and prolapse of the mitral valve in nine (41%). A combination of the three signs was seen in six patients (27%). Lack of systolic leaflet coapta
