Mechanisms of enhanced bacterial endospore inactivation during sterilization by ohmic heating.

During ohmic heating, the electric field may additionally inactivate bacterial endospores. However, the exact mechanism of action is unclear. Thus, a mechanistic study was carried out, investigating the possible target of electric fields inside the spore. Bacillus subtilis spores were heated by conventional and ohmic heating in a capillary system under almost identical thermal conditions. Wild-type (PS533) spores were used, as well as isogenic mutants lacking certain components known for their contribution to spores' heat resistance: small-acid soluble proteins (SASP) protecting DNA (PS578); t

Effects of deep heating provided by therapeutic ultrasound on demyelinating nerves.

[Purpose] Physiotherapeutic heating agents are classified into two groups: superficial-heating agents and deep-heating agents. Therapeutic ultrasound is a deep-heating agent used to treat various musculosketal disorders. Numerous studies have attempted to determine the impact of ultrasound on healthy nerve conduction parameters. However, the instantaneous effects of deep heating via ultrasound on demyelinating nerves do not appear to have been described previously. The present study aimed to assess and compare the impact of ultrasound on demyelinating nerve and healthy nerve conduction paramet

Infrared Laser Heating Applied to Nanopore Sensing for DNA Duplex Analysis.

Temperature studies coupled with resistive-pulse nanopore sensing enable the quantification of a variety of important thermodynamic properties at the single-molecule limit. Previous demonstrations of nanopore sensing with temperature control have utilized bulk chamber heating methodologies. This approach makes it difficult to rapidly change temperatures and enable optical access for other analytical techniques (i.e., single-molecule fluorescence). To address these issues, researchers have explored laser-based methodologies through either direct infrared (IR) absorption or plasmonic assisted he

Electrical heating synchronized with IR imaging to determine thin film defects.

Measuring conductive thin film properties during production and in end products is a challenge. The main demands for the measurements are: production control, reliability and functionality in final applications. There are several ways to measure thin film quality in a laboratory environment, however these methods are poorly applicable for production facilities. In order to bypass the limitations of existing methods, a simple synchronized heating and IR-imaging based system was implemented. To demonstrate the proposed method, Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) was selected as an example of conductive thin

Changes in antenna of photosystem II induced by short-term heating.

Changes in antenna of photosystem II, induced by short-term heating, were studied using characteristics of a short-wavelength band in low-temperature fluorescence spectra (77 K) of pea chloroplasts. Heating for 5 min was carried out at 25 and 45°C in the darkness or in the presence of white light with intensity of 260 or 1,400 μmol/m(2)s. Most modes of thermal treating induced a decrease in integral intensity of the band and an increase of its half-width. The changes were more prominent at high-temperature heating. The second derivative of the contour of a short-wavelength band showed its thre

Larynx and cervical trachea in humidification and heating of inhaled gases.

To evaluate the participation of the larynx and cervical trachea in conditioning inspired gases, we randomly allocated 16 mixed-breed dogs to two groups: group TT (tracheal tube; n = 8) and group LMA (laryngeal mask airway; n = 8). The dogs were anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium and mechanically ventilated for 3 hours. The parameters studied were temperature and absolute humidities of ambient, inhaled, and tracheal air. There was a small increase in tracheal air temperature compared to inhaled air temperature, but no significant difference between groups. The absolute humidity of tracheal

Does usage of domestic heating influence internal environmental conditions and health?

BACKGROUND: Housing conditions are recognised as an important determinant of health. In the UK, interventions to improve domestic heating are in place with the expectation that they will improve health. As a component of evaluating such policies, this study assesses whether specific health outcomes are significantly associated with the extent and duration of domestic heating use, either directly or via a possible mediating effect of internal environmental conditions. METHODS: Baseline data from a prospective controlled study evaluating the health effects of a publicly-funded programme of heat

Intracerebroventricular tryptophan increases heating and heat storage rate in exercising rats.

The role of increased hypothalamic tryptophan (TRP) availability on thermoregulation and rates of core temperature increase and heat storage (HS) during exercise was studied in normal untrained rats running until fatigue. The rats were each anesthetized with 2.5% tribromoethanol (1.0 ml kg(-1) ip) and fitted with a chronic guiding cannula attached to the right lateral cerebral ventricle 1 week prior to the experiments. Immediately before exercise, they were randomly injected through these cannulae with 2.0 microl of 0.15 M NaCl (SAL; n=6) or 20.3 microM L-TRP solution (n=7). Exercise consisted

Frictional heating of total hip implants. Part 1: measurements in patients.

Hip implants heat up due to friction during long lasting, high loading activities like walking. Thermal damage in the surrounding soft and hard tissues and deteriorated lubrication of synovial fluid could contribute to implant loosening. The goal of this study was to determine the implant temperatures in vivo under varying conditions. Temperatures and contact forces in the joints were measured in seven joints of five patients using instrumented prostheses with alumina ceramic heads and telemetry data transmission. The peak temperature in implants with polyethylene cups rose up to 43.1 degrees

Microwave heating of malignant mouse tumors and tissue equivalent phantom systems.

Studies were conducted on the free-field heating of mammary tumors on the flank of mice and of tissue equivalent phantoms. A 200 watt, P.M., 2450 MHZ source was marginal in heating 1 cm tumors from room ambient to 38 degrees C. A technique was developed using warm air to raise the thermal baseline of the tumors to body core temperature and microwaves to produce significant hyperthermal levels. This allowed the production tumor temperatures of 45 degrees with greatly reduced microwave power and with significantly more uniform temperatures. However, the non-uniformity in temperature achieved wit

Diabetes-Associated Changes in the Toe Photoplethysmogram During Local Heating Test.

We investigated changes in the pulse waveform recorded by photoplethysmography (PPG) during a local heating test in patients with diabetes. The following groups of subjects were studied: healthy individuals (n = 15), patients with Type 2 diabetes accompanied by diabetic retinopathy (n = 14), patients with Type 2 diabetes and diabetic foot syndrome (n = 16). Measurements were taken from the big toes of both limbs while the skin was heated from 32°C to 42°C. We found statistically significant changes in PPG waveform after heating between all three groups. The main change is that the dicrotic not

Engineering Magnetic Nanoclusters for Highly Efficient Heating in Radio-Frequency Nanowarming.

Effective thawing of cryopreserved samples requires rapid and uniform heating. This is achievable through nanowarming, an approach that heats magnetic nanoparticles by using alternating magnetic fields. Here we demonstrate the synthesis and surface modification of magnetic nanoclusters for efficient nanowarming. Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoclusters with an optimal diameter of 58 nm exhibit a high specific absorption rate of 1499 W/g Fe under an alternating magnetic field at 43 kA/m and 413 kHz, more than twice that of commercial iron oxide cores used in prior nanowarming studies. Surface modificatio

Examining Shape Dependence on Small Mild Steel Specimens during Heating Processes.

With regard to the heating technology of small test specimens (D < 1 inch, i.e., 25.4 mm), only a limited amount of data and literature are available for making adequate technological decisions. Heating time of small geometric shapes is influenced by the technological parameters of the furnace, the temperature, the disposition technique in the furnace and the geometric characteristics of the workpiece. How to shorten heating time to achieve a suitable material structure is a vital question, while considerable energy is saved at the same time. Among the geometric characteristics, shape dependen

Autonomous animal heating and cooling system for temperature-regulated MR experiments.

Temperature is a hallmark parameter influencing almost all magnetic resonance properties (e.g., T\textsubscript{1}, T\textsubscript{2}, proton density, diffusion and more). In the pre-clinical setting, temperature has a large influence on animal physiology (e.g., respiration rate, heart rate, metabolism, cellular stress, and more) and needs to be carefully regulated, especially when the animal is under anesthesia and thermoregulation is disrupted. We present an open-source heating and cooling system capable of stabilizing the temperature of the animal. The system was designed using Peltier mod

Rectal and gastrointestinal temperature differ during passive heating and subsequent recovery.

We aimed to compare rectal temperature (Trec) and gastro-intestinal temperature (TGI) during passive heating and subsequent recovery with and without ice slurry ingestion. Twelve males (age: 25 ± 4 years, body mass index: 25.7 ± 2.5 kg m-2) were immersed in hot water on two occasions (Trec elevation: 1.82 ± 0.08°C). In the subsequent 60-min recovery in ambient conditions, participants ingested either 6.8 g kg-1 of ice slurry (-0.6°C, ICE) or control drink (37°C, CON). During passive heating, Trec was lower than TGI (P < 0.001), in the recovery, Trec was higher than TGI (P < 0.001). During pass

Comprehensive metabolite analysis of wheat dough in a continuous heating process.

Comprehensive metabolite analysis was carried out by gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry to investigate the time-dependent metabolic changes during wheat dough heating. Thirty-five volatile metabolites comprising alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, aromatic compounds, furans, acids and esters were identified. Sixty-four non-volatile metabolites, which covered a broad spectrum of polar and non-polar constituents, were also identified and quantified. Results showed that the content of most volatile metabolites increased during heating. Meanwhile, the levels of non-volatile polar metabol

Turbostratic Boron-Carbon-Nitrogen and Boron Nitride by Flash Joule Heating.

Turbostratic layers in 2D materials have an interlayer misalignment. The lack of alignment expands the intrinsic interlayer distances and weakens the optical and electronic interactions between adjacent layers. This introduces properties distinct from those structures with well-aligned lattices and strong coupling interactions. However, direct and rapid synthesis of turbostratic materials remains a challenge owing to their thermodynamically metastable properties. Here, a flash Joule heating (FJH) method to achieve bulk synthesis of boron-carbon-nitrogen ternary compounds with turbostratic stru

Disassembly Study of Ultrasonically Welded Thermoplastic Composite Joints via Resistance Heating.

This manuscript explores the disassembly potential of ultrasonically welded thermoplastic composite joints for reuse or recycling through resistance heating via a nanocomposite film located at the welded interface. Nanocomposite films containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were characterized for thermo-electrical behavior to assess self-heating. It was generally observed that maximum temperature increased with MWCNT and film thickness. To demonstrate potential for disassembly, glass fiber/polypropylene adherends were welded with nanocomposite films. Shear stress during disassembly w

Predictable and unpredictable survival of foodborne pathogens during non-isothermal heating.

In previous work, extreme survival of various bacterial species during cooking was reported when attached to chicken meat. In this paper the effects of an extremely high challenge temperature on survival of Salmonella Typhimurium and Campylobacter jejuni, attached to chicken breast fillets or pork to test for matrix effects are reported. Survival was predicted, using standard D- and z-values from the literature, and compared to experimentally obtained data. Attached to meat, both S. Typhimurium and C. jejuni survived longer than predicted, longer when attached to chicken meat than when attache
