Toxic and essential metals have been implicated in the pathogenesis of sporadic motor neuron disease (SMND), but attempts to measure blood levels of these metals have led to contradictory results. We, therefore, measured blood levels of various metals using paired SMND/controls. In 20 subjects with SMND (15 males, five females, mean age 56.8 years) and 20 partner controls (15 females, five males, mean age 55.0 years) cadmium, lead, mercury, copper, zinc and selenium levels were measured in blood, plasma and red cells with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and manganese levels with a

Intraoperative cell salvage, whereby shed surgical blood is recovered for autologous reinfusion, is frequently used during hip arthroplasty because of the potential for significant blood loss. The following cases describe 2 instances in which chromium and cobalt particles from patients' metal-on-metal hip implants were identified within the blood recovery system. Results of heavy metal testing during the second case suggest that the use of a leukocyte reduction filter effectively reduces metal concentrations to below normal circulating levels. However, the reinfusion of cell salvage blood cont

EDTA chelation therapy is regularly used in thousands of patients worldwide. An FDA approval of more than 50 years ago for heavy metal detoxification prompted many physicians to use EDTA as an alternative medicine for many categories of patients. Recently, NIH initiated the so-called Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT), which has been designed to evaluate whether EDTA and high dose oral vitamins and mineral therapy could offer clinical, quality of life, and economic benefits for patients with a previous myocardial infraction. A 50% reduction of urinary Pb and improvement of systolic blood

Mercury exposure is the second-most common cause of toxic metal poisoning. Public health concern over mercury exposure, due to contamination of fish with methylmercury and the elemental mercury content of dental amalgams, has long been a topic of political and medical debate. Although the toxicology of mercury is complex, there is evidence for antioxidant protection in the prevention of neurological and renal damage caused by mercury toxicity. Alpha-lipoic acid, a coenzyme of pyruvate and alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase, has been used in Germany as an antioxidant and approved treatment for d

Occupational neurotoxic diseases have become increasingly common in Taiwan due to industrialization. Over the past 40 years, Taiwan has transformed from an agricultural society to an industrial society. The most common neurotoxic diseases also changed from organophosphate poisoning to heavy metal intoxication, and then to organic solvent and semiconductor agent poisoning. The nervous system is particularly vulnerable to toxic agents because of its high metabolic rate. Neurological manifestations may be transient or permanent, and may range from cognitive dysfunction, cerebellar ataxia, Parkins

Metals such as iron and copper are critical to living organisms, whereas other metals such as lead and arsenic have no known biologic role. Any metals in large amounts may cause toxicity. Many metals cause pervasive systemic effects involving the nervous system, which can be subtle in some cases. Although challenging, the diagnosis and treatment of metal poisoning can be made based on history, physical examination, and the proper use of metal testing. This article focuses on the use, and misuse, of chelation in the diagnosis and management of metal intoxication.

Arsenic, a metalloid, is known to cause deleterious effects in various body organs, particularly the liver, urinary bladder, and brain, and these effects are primarily mediated through oxidative stress. Chelation therapy has been considered one of the promising medical treatments for arsenic poisoning. Meso 2,3- dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) has been recognized as one of the most effective chelating drugs to treat arsenic poisoning. However, the drug is compromised with a number of shortcomings, including the inability to treat chronic arsenic poisoning due to its extracellular distribution.

BACKGROUND: Heavy metals are elements that are naturally found in the earth. They are used in many modern-day applications in agriculture, medicine, and industry. Heavy metal poisoning occurs when the body's soft tissues absorb too much of a particular metal. The heavy metals of interest for this review paper were cadmium, arsenic, mercury, and lead since these are the most common metals that the human body can absorb in toxic amounts. Different plant species were investigated in recent years for their effect on oxidative stress parameters after intoxication with heavy metals.
OBJECTIVES: Thi

Kidneys are particularly susceptible to the effect of toxic agents that can cause renal damage and even renal failure. The aim of this study was to present current knowledge of the influence of occupational toxic agents on renal functions. The authors describe the major nephrotoxic factors, such as heavy metals (including lead, cadmium, and mercury), organic solvents, pesticides and silica. They discuss changes in the kidney structure and molecular mechanisms of nephrotoxicity and carcinogenesis induced by occupational exposure to major toxic agents and also indicate possibilities of detecting

BACKGROUND: Metal-on-metal (MoM) tribological pairing results in less volumetric abrasion than pairing with the conventionally used polyethylene and is associated with a lower risk of material failure compared to other hard-hard pairings. An increased frequency of problem cases in recent years has led to a great increase in uncertainty. Against this background in this article the current aspects of epidemiology, etiology, diagnostics and treatment of complications in MoM hip joint endoprostheses will be discussed.

Poisoning is an important health problem in Hong Kong. In 1990 alone, 6500 patients were treated in Hong Kong hospitals and there were 245 deaths. Two hospital-based studies indicated that exposures to poisons were intentional in the majority (96%) of adult cases, with hypnotics/sedatives (34%), household products (16%) and analgesics (14%) being most often used. Apart from drugs and chemicals, accidental poisoning may occur after the ingestion of Chinese medicines or vegetables contaminated with methamidophos. The former may contain highly toxic aconitine or podophyllin, declared and undeclar

Cadmium contamination of environment is a subject of serious international concern. Bioaccumulation of cadmium occurs primarily through ingestion of contaminated water and food. Cadmium poisoning came into prominence with the "itai-itai" disease event in Japan in the 1950s. It could also cause damages to liver, kidney, lung and other organs. Thus, the treatment of cadmium poisoning has become a research hotspot. Researchers are trying their best to explore prophylactic and therapeutic medicines for prevention and treatment of cadmium-induced poisoning. So far, chelation therapy, the convention

Arsenic, commonly found in insecticides, herbicides, and industrial materials, is involved in the majority of heavy metal poisonings reported in the United States. Accidental poisoning appears to be most common in the pediatric age-group, whereas intentional and covert poisonings predominate in adults. Diagnosis is often difficult. The clinical presentations of arsenic poisoning, both acute and chronic types, represent a wide spectrum, largely dependent on route of exposure, chemical form, and dose. Because the patient or others providing the history may suppress information on exposure and be

Digenetic eucotylids of the Paratanaisia genus are widely reported parasites of the avian renal system. The infection, commonly reported in free-living and zoo-housed birds, is described for the first time in a domiciled bird, a cockatiel kept as pet bird with free access to the yard outdoors. The bird was received at Veterinary Hospital, where clinical and radiographic evaluations suggested a case of heavy-metal poisoning. Although the bird received supportive care and a chelating agent, it died the next day. The necropsy showed friable kidneys and congestion of blood vessels in structures su

After the ultralow emission transformation of coal-fired power plants, cement production became China's leading industrial emission source of nitrogen oxides. Flue gas dust contents at the outlet of cement kiln preheaters were as high as 80-100 g/m3, and the calcium oxide content in the dust exceeded 60%. Commercial V2O5(-WO3)/TiO2 catalysts suitable for coal-fired flue gas suffer from alkaline earth metal Ca poisoning of cement kiln flue gas. Recent studies have also identified the poisoning of cement kiln selective catalytic reaction (SCR) catalysts by the heavy metals lead and thallium. Inv

Over the past 20 years, global production of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) rank in the top three compared to other metals such as Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, As and Hg. However, due to the potential for exposure and toxicity to humans, more attention of environmental pollution was paid to other metals such as Cd and Hg. Aquatic organisms are sensitive to Cu and Zn. Even though internal concentrations of these required elements are homeostatically controlled, toxic effects can occur at the fish gill surface. In this work, concentrations in surface waters and toxic effects of Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, Pb, Cd, As, Hg were

The inhibition effect of the selected heavy metals (Ag+, Cd2+, Cu2+, and Hg2+) on glucose oxidase (GOx) enzyme from Aspergillus niger (EC 1.1.3.4.) was studied using a new amperometric biosensor with an electrochemical transducer based on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) covered with a thin layer of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) incorporated with ruthenium(IV) oxide as a redox mediator. Direct adsorption of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and subsequent covering with Nafion® layer was used for immobilization of GOx. The analytical figures of merit of the developed glucose (Glc) bios
