[Achillodynia].

Achilles tendinitis and posterior heel pain are caused by a wide variety of disorders. Understanding of the functional anatomy and pathomechanics of the Achilles tendon is essential for diagnosis and adequate therapy. Possible causes for heel pain include paratenonitis, tendinitis, tendinitis with partial rupture, insertional tendinitis, subachilles and retroachilles bursitis, Haglunds deformity and calcaneal spur. These chronic overuse symptoms may be triggered by pes plano valgus, lateral ankle instability, hyperlaxity, malalignement of the lower extremity, forefoot or hip disorders. In obes

[Plantar Fasciopathy - Pathophysiology Diagnostics and Therapy - A Clinical Guideline].

Plantar Fasciopathy - Pathophysiology Diagnostics and Therapy - A Clinical Guideline Abstract. Plantar fasciitis (often referred to as "heel spurs") is a common problem in daily practice. Approximately 4-10% of the general population is affected, in athletes the prevalence is even higher with an estimated prevalence of 5-18%. Heel pain is one of the most common running injuries. Besides runners, overweight individuals exposed to several hours of standing or walking daily are also at risk. The reduction in quality of life can be considerably high. The diagnosis can usually be secured by means o

[Physiotherapeutic proceeding in symptomatic calcaneal spur treatment].

Calcaneal spur is one of the most common disorders associated with foot pain. According to appearance of pain in each step during the day, it is important to find the most effective method of treatment. This article is a review of medical reports about non-operative treatment method. It shows that ultrasound therapy was the most common physical intervetion used so far, and mostly occurs to be effective. However one of the comparative studies improves higher efficiency of phonopheresis. Another comparative study, shows higher efficiency of combined ultrasound and laser therapy, than exclusive l

Radiological association between Haglund's deformity and plantar calcaneal spur: A retrospective case-control study.

ObjectivesPlantar calcaneal spur (PCS) is a bony outgrowth of the calcaneal tuberosity frequently associated with chronic heel pain. Although its precise etiology remains uncertain, mechanical stress and repetitive traction forces are frequently implicated. Haglund's deformity, defined as a bony enlargement on the posterosuperior calcaneus, results in retrocalcaneal impingement of the Achilles tendon. While both conditions involve stress-related alterations of the calcaneus, their potential association has not been clearly established. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between PCS

[Physical-technical principles of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT)].

Extracorporeal shock waves in orthopaedics are currently applied in the treatment of chronic enthesiopathies such as lateral epicondylitis, plantar heel spur, as well as in calcifying tendinitis of the shoulder or in bony nonunions. Detailed knowledge of physical parameters and properties of shock waves appear to be necessary to determine clinically relevant dose-effect relations and to make shock wave devices, clinical results, and basic science in shock wave therapy more comparable. This study gives an overview of physical parameters and properties in shock wave therapy. Measurement technolo

Periosteal osteosarcoma of the calcaneum: a case report.

A 30-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of pain and swelling over the sole of her right foot. Plain radiograph showed a calcified mass in the heel pad, which appeared to be arising from the spur on inferior aspect of calcaneum. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a lesion, hypointense on T1-weighted and hyperintense on T2-weighted images over the plantar aspect of the foot. Open biopsy of the mass was indicative of periosteal osteosarcoma, the variety that has never been reported in calcaneum. Below-knee amputation was done with no recurrence or distance metastasis seen at 24 months

Haglund Deformity and Plantar Calcaneal Spur in Insertional Achilles Tendinopathy: Prevalence, Coexistence, and Radiographic Characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Insertional Achilles tendinopathy (IAT) is a common cause of posterior heel pain and has been associated with several osseous abnormalities around the calcaneus. Although Haglund deformity and plantar calcaneal spur (PCS) have each been linked to IAT, their coexistence and radiographic characteristics have not been comprehensively evaluated. This study compared the prevalence of Haglund deformity and PCS between patients with IAT and controls, assessed their coexistence, and examined radiographic features associated with IAT. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included

A Case Report - K Wire as Guide in Endoscopic Plantar Fascia Release for Beginners.

INTRODUCTION: This case report is to emphasize the role of K wire in localizing the plantar fascia and calcaneum spur during endoscopic plantar fascia release (EPER). Plantar fasciitis is a very common problem in society. Most of the cases get good relief with physiotherapy, a change in footwear, and medication. Some cases might need steroid/platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections. In a few refractory cases, pain remains even after extensive physiotherapy and plantar fascia injections. Such cases can be benefitted by plantar fascia release. Several techniques have been described for fascia relea

Endoscopic calcaneoplasty (ECP) as a surgical treatment of Haglund's syndrome.

Posterior calcaneal exostosis treatment modalities showed many controversial opinions. After failure of the conservative treatment, surgical bursectomy and resection of the calcaneal exostosis are indicated by many authors. But clinical studies also show a high rate of unsatisfactory results with a relative high incidence of complications. The minimal surgical invasive technique by an endoscopic calcaneoplasty (ECP) could be an option to overcome some of these problems. We operated on 81 patients with an age range between 25 and 55 years, 40 males and 41 females. The radiologic examination pri
