INTRODUCTION: Echinococcosis is produced by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus; it is a parasitic disease which is seen rarely in humans and has adverse outcomes. We report a case of advanced pelvic hydatid bone disease with successful limb salvage surgery. Our patient had a 5-year follow-up without recurrence which is a rarity as per the literature. Early diagnosis and prompt medical therapy are necessary for effective management whereas delayed diagnosis is always fraught with the risk of recurrence and sepsis.

Our patient was a 76-year-old female who has been operated on 2 times in 8 years for pelvic chondrosarcoma. The patient came to our clinic with a large mass in left iliac region which extended into the paravertebral area. Physical examination and preoperative imagining studies revealed a mass at the left iliac area that infiltrated sciatic notch and extended from posterior iliac region towards the anterior side of iliac bone through the sciatic notch and an incisional hernia including descending colon. From 1983 to 1990, nine patients with combined hypogastric (HA) and profunda femoral arterial (PFA) occlusive disease presented with five nonhealing hip disarticulations, three nonhealing above-the-knee amputations, perineal necrosis in six patients, buttock necrosis in four patients, visceral ischemia in two patients, and lumbosacral spinal ischemia in one patient. Necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon but often fatal disease. Given the various causes of necrotizing fasciitis, we report a case of sigmoid colon perforation caused by a toothpick subsequently resulting in fulminant necrotizing fasciitis of the retroperitoneum and right thigh successfully treated by hemipelvectomy and Hartmann´s procedure.

Rapid transfusion of citrated whole blood was associated with acute hypotension and a rising central venous pressure in a patient undergoing pelvic exenteration and hemipelvectomy. Evidence of cardiac failure was accompanied by a precipitous decrease in serum ionized calcium (Ca++) concentration. When the rate of blood transfusion was slowed, arterial blood pressure returned to the control level and serum Ca++ increased.

Telangiectatic osteosarcoma is a rare variant of osteosarcoma and can be easily misdiagnosed as aneurysmal bone cyst. The abdominoinguinal incision provides exposure and renders resectable large tumors located in the lower retroperitoneum, the area of external iliac vessels, and the wall of the pelvis. It is particularly useful for tumors manifesting fixation to these areas. It has been used successfully in 18 patients with malignant tumors and may be expected to increase substantially resectability of tumors in this area and to decrease the need for hemipelvectomy.

He developed New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-producing E. coli bacteremia, soft-tissue infection, and sacral osteomyelitis. Desmoid tumor of bone, also termed desmoplastic fibroma or aggressive fibromatosis, is a rare, locally aggressive fibroblastic tumor. We present a 16-year-old male with a huge desmoid tumor involving the iliac wing. It was associated with enchondromatous nodules mimicking malignancy. BACKGROUND: Application of vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) in soft tissue defects after high-energy pelvic trauma is described as a retrospective study in a level one trauma center.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2002 and 2004, 13 patients were treated for severe soft tissue injuries in the pelvic region. Periacetabular tumors of the anterior pelvic ring often present difficult problems in diagnosis and treatment. The use of computed tomography is valuable. The natural history, management and prognosis of scrotal carcinoma are reviewed in 19 cases and a method to stage the tumor is presented. Ten patients were rendered free of evidence of cancer, 9 of whom have survived more than 5 years. Wide local excision of the primary lesion with radical ilioinguinal dissection for proved inguinal lymph node metastases is the present recommendation. For non-resectable regional metastatic disease no treatment of established effectiveness is available. Irradiation has produced benefit on rare occasions and hemipelvectomy may be considered in selected cases.

Open pelvic fractures are rare fractures usually resulting from a severe trauma. Only 4 of 121 patients treated operatively in 1994 for a pelvic trauma showed an open injury. CASE: Synovial chondromatosis (SC) is a rare condition involving the proliferation of cartilage within the synovial membrane secondary to subsynovial connective tissue metaplasia. Malignant transformation to chondrosarcoma is rare. We cite a case of SC of the hip refractory to arthroscopic debridement, found to have secondary chondrosarcoma on aborted total hip arthroplasty, in which curative treatment was ultimately obtained with external hemipelvectomy.

This report describes six cases of liposarcoma. The primary sites were the retroperitoneum in three cases, the lower extremity in two cases and the jejunal mesenterium in one case. One retroperitoneum case had the heaviest liposarcoma (40 kg) that has been reported in the literature. One patient with thigh liposarcoma who developed three recurrences and underwent hemipelvectomy has been free from the disease for the past 6 1/2 years. Histologically, all three retroperitoneum cases showed well-differentiated liposarcoma and two lower extremity cases had myxoid type liposarcoma.
