The poplar petiolegall aphid, Pemphigus populitransversus Riley (Hemiptera: Pemphigidae), is a gall-forming aphid attacking leaf petioles of Populus spp., its primary hosts. Its secondary hosts are the roots of cruciferous (Brassicaceae) plants, where it is also commonly known as the "cabbage root aphid." The apterous forms are destructive pests of cruciferous vegetables in many parts of the world. In our experiments, the root-feeding apterous forms were extracted from the soil using a Berlese funnel, which drives the aphids downward by using light and heat. The results show that a majority of

Studies were conducted to assess population densities and phenology of the psyllid Diaphorina citri Kuwayama at two citrus groves in east-central Florida. One grove contained young, irrigated grapefruit trees and the other contained mature, nonirrigated orange trees. The two groves were sampled weekly for eggs, nymphs, and adults on flush shoots; for adults on mature leaves; and for adults captured on yellow sticky card traps. Because infestations of immature D. citri develop strictly on young flush, the abundance of flush was assessed weekly. Overall means of 26.5, 16.8, and 0.27 eggs, nymphs

The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), a pest of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., native to Asia, has recently become a principal pest of this crop in many areas of North America. Insecticides are currently used to manage A. glycines, but host plant resistance is a potential alternative management tool. Tests were conducted to determine resistance to A. glycines among soybean lines. 'Cobb,' 'Tie-feng 8,' and 'Jackson' were resistant to population growth of A. glycines compared with 'Cook' and '91B91,' a susceptible control. Antibiosis was evident in Cobb, Jackson,

This paper evaluated the risk that Aenolamia postica (Walker) Fennah populations reach the economic threshold in sugar cane fields in Veracruz, México. A risk deductive model was constructed to include the sequence of events leading to damaging populations, considered the top event or critical failure in the crop. Model events were identified and quantified, and model was validated on field conditions. The model components and their state values were identified as: temperature e" 28 degrees C, precipitation e" 45% during June and July, soil clay content e" 40%, infested adjoining fields, defic

Plant sap-feeding insects (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha) with rich species diversity generally harbor obligate endosymbionts within their specialized symbiotic organs (i.e., bacteriomes) to supplement them with essential amino acids (EAAs) and B vitamins that are unavailable in their nutritionally unbalanced diet, representing a typical model of insect-microbe symbioses. However, the processes of symbiont translocation and morphogenesis of bacteriomes during embryonic development remain unclear in Auchenorrhyncha. Here, we assessed symbiont replacement events in representative species across the

Membracidae is a family of insects known for its diverse pronotal shapes and coloration, which are used for mimicry. It is common to find species of this family that maintain mutualistic relationships with ants and bees, to which the membracids provide a sweet substance in exchange for protection. One such species with a mutualistic relationship is Horiola picta (Coquebert, 1801) (Smiliinae: Tragopini), considered a cocoa pest in several regions of Brazil. To complement morphological studies, we describe the morphology of the male reproductive system and sperm of H. picta. The male reproductiv

The monotypic Oriental genus Vitruvius Distant, 1901 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae), having an intricate and confusing taxonomic history, is revised. A new species, Vitruvius dobby Roca-Cusachs, Rider & Kment new species, is described from Cambodia and Thailand. Notes on the hypothesized classification of the genus based on both biology and morphology are presented, but its systematic placement is left unresolved. The morphological characteristics of the genus are redescribed. Habitus photographs of the type specimen of V. insignis Distant, 1901 and its labels, and photog

The pentatomids (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) are the third most speciose family within the Heteroptera or the true bugs. The family occurs worldwide and comprises around five thousand valid species within 950 genera. Padaeus Stål belongs to a complex of other genera of Carpocorini Mulsant and Rey related to Euschistus Dallas. These genera present similarities in color, size, and shape, and share common features. However, among its four congeneric species, Padaeus bovillus Distant has been highlighted as an outlier by the posterior margins of the bucculae evanescent, while its congeneric species pr

The azalea lace bug (Stephanitis pyrioides Scott) (Hemiptera: Tingidae) is an invasive pest of rhododendrons and azaleas (Ericaceae: Rhododendron), which feeds on the underside of leaves causing chlorosis, reduced photosynthesis, and even plant death. While insecticides can control this pest, growers, landscape managers, and homeowners have requested softer alternatives. Augmentative release of predatory green lacewing Chrysoperla sp. (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) eggs and larvae has reduced S. pyrioides, but large-scale implementation may not be practical nor cost-effective. Attracting naturally

The leafhopper Empoasca vitis (Göthe) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) feeds on veins of grapevine leaves, mainly on the phloem, causing physiological injury, color change and drying of leaf margins, yield and sugar content reduction. The relative infestation level (i.e., the probability that a plant is attacked by herbivores) of E. vitis on different grapevine cultivars and their sensitivity (i.e., the incidence of symptoms expression in response to herbivore feeding or other stimuli) to this pest were studied over four years in two vineyards located in northeastern Italy. Some cultivars (e.g., Carm

The ultrastructure of the fossula spongiosa and pretarsus of adult Haematoloecha nigrorufa (Stål) (Heteroptera: Reduviidae: Ectrichodinae) was examined for the first time using scanning electron microscope. The fossula spongiosa of H. nigrorufa is located on the ventral surface of the distal part of the tibia of both the fore- and midlegs. The area of the fossula spongiosa on the female foreleg is approximately 251338.88 μm(2), while the area of the fossula spongiosa on the male foreleg is markedly smaller, only about 196548.98 μm(2). For both genders the area of the fossula spongiosa on the f

The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, has become the most significant soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] insect pest in the north central soybean production region of North America. The objectives of this research were to measure selected genotypes for resistance to the soybean aphid in the later vegetative and reproductive stages under field conditions, and confirm the presence of tolerance in KS4202. The results from 2007 to 2011 indicate that KS4202 can support aphid populations with minimal yield loss at levels where significant yield loss would be expected in most other genotypes.

Lygus hesperus Knight (Hemiptera: Miridae) is a key pest of cotton (Gossypium spp.) in the western United States that injures floral buds (squares) and developing fruit (bolls). However, no clear relationship between Lygus population level and plant injury has been established. Age-dependent feeding activity by L. hesperus is a possible source of variation that has not been examined for its influence in studies of the impact of Lygus on cotton. Recent video-based laboratory studies indicated that feeding behaviors and trivial movement varied among L. hesperus adults of different gender and rep

Bed bugs, Cimex lectularius L. (Hemiptera: Cimicidae), are a fast-growing urban pest of significant public health importance in the United States and many other countries. Yet, there is very little field research on the ecology of this pest due to its near absence in the United States and most developed nations for several decades. We investigated characteristics of the bed bug infestation and dispersal in a 223-unit high-rise apartment building through visual inspections, intercepting devices, and resident and staff interviews between December 2008 and April 2009. The following results were o

The studies on hematologic changes in humans or animals as a result of bedbug bites are lacking. This study was undertaken to examine changes in the blood picture of mice (Mus musculus) exposed to Cimex lectularius biting. As compared to the check animals, mice exposed to bedbug bites either once or twice within 7 days showed insignificantly higher WBC's (1.6 and 2.8% increase, respectively) and lower HGB content (0.5 and 0.8% decrease, respectively) and significantly higher PLT's (P < 0.01) by 2.2% and 3.0%, respectively. Significantly higher (P < 0.01) RBC's counts in mice bitten once than t

Four sampling methods that included A-Vac, D-Vac, pole-bucket, and beat-net devices were evaluated for estimating relative densities of glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca vitri-pennis (Germar) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) nymphs and adults on citrus (Citrus spp.) trees. All four methods produced similar temporal and spatial distribution profiles, although significant differences in quantities of H. vitripennis adults and nymphs caught by each device were observed. The four sampling methods also showed a consistent male bias in adult populations across a range of densities, suggesting that pr

The relative contributions of host plant, herbivore species and clone to variation in the interaction between cereal aphids and wheat were investigated using five clones each of three species, Rhopalosiphum padi (Linnaeus), Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) and Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), on seedlings of two cultivars of Triticum aestivum L. and one cultivar of Triticum durum Desf. More individuals and biomass of R. padi than of the other two species were produced on seedlings. The three wheat cultivars lost similar amounts of biomass as a result of infestation by aphids, with the amount lost dep

Triatoma guasayana (Wygodzinsky & Abalos) is a secondary vector of Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas), the etiologic agent of Chagas disease, in the Chaco region of Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay. The spatial distribution of T. guasayana in a rural community in northwestern Argentina is described and analyzed using very high spatial resolution satellite imagery, geographic information systems, and spatial statistics. Since a 1992 residual spraying with insecticides of all houses, site-specific domestic and peridomestic reinfestations by triatomine bugs were monitored using various methods semiannual

There is little information on the energy turnover of carnivorous water insects. This study concerns the energy flow through an imaginal population of the water scorpion, Nepra rubra, a water bug common in the lake "Neusiedler See" in eastern Austria.Population dynamics, production and respiration were determined from 1972 to 1975 under conditions as natural as possible. The cumulative sum of production energy is small, comprising 179.3 J for ♂♂ and 223.8 J for ♀♀, with an additional 241.6 J for reproduction. Food reserves, particularly fat accumulated in the fat body during prediapause, are u

The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys Stål (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is a highly invasive and polyphagous pest causing substantial economic losses in agricultural systems worldwide. Although the species has been reported in neighboring countries, information regarding its occurrence and impact on berry production in Kosovo has been lacking. This study represents the first documented occurrence of H. halys in Kosovo and aimed to investigate its population dynamics, spatiotemporal distribution, and associated damage in raspberry and blueberry plantations over a 2-year period (2024 t
