OBJECTIVES: The relations between the severity of histopathological lesions and epidemiological, clinical and biological data were studied in 86 patients with chronic viral hepatitis C.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: None of the patients had any clinical signs of decompensated liver disease. Three groups of patients were individualized according to histopathological findings: 17 (20%) had chronic persistent hepatitis, 48 (56%) had chronic active hepatitis without cirrhosis, and 21 (24%) had cirrhosis.
RESULTS: Patients with cirrhosis differed significantly from patients in the two other groups for al

OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: In France, the positive rate for unit-HCV antibodies in the sera of pregnant women is usually found to be between 0.7 and 3.9%. The aim of our prospective study was to determine the interactions between pregnancy and chronic viral hepatitis C in 12 pregnant women.
RESULTS: In our study, chronic viral hepatitis C did not influence maternal or neonatal outcome. The mean gestational age was 38.4 +/- 3 weeks. During follow-up, mean serum ALT levels were significantly lower (36 +/- 17 mU/mL) during the last three months of pregnancy compared to before pregnancy (237 +/- 144

There have been conflicting reports of the clinical outcome of acute hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. A prospective study evaluated 432 patients with chronic hepatitis C (183 with cirrhosis) over a 7-year period. Of the 17 patients with concurrent HAV infection, seven developed fulminant hepatitis and six died. None of these patients had cirrhosis; however, the HLA phenotype (A1; B8:DR3) appeared to be a significant factor in the development of fulminant hepatitis. Patients with this phenotype had high titres of antinuclear antibodie

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) has emerged as a major global health concern and, if left untreated, can lead to significant liver damage, including cirrhosis, decompensated liver disease, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Approximately 40% of patients with HCV infection experience extrahepatic manifestations, including renal involvement. HCV-related renal disease is of significant importance among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), leading to higher morbidity and mortality. The renal damage due to HCV infection primarily results from cryoglobulinemia and glomerulonephritis, with conditions

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis C was until recently treated with a combined therapy of interferon and ribavirin. More recently, direct antiviral agents (DAA), are being introduced. They are more tolerable and have fewer side effects, with better treatment results. In the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina we have started using this new therapy, with a limited financial opportunity. Large numbers of patients with chronic hepatitis C are former or current addicts, some of them treat their addiction with methadone or buprenorphine. These patients often formerly have a depression disorder and dur

INTRODUCTION: The severity of liver fibrosis can be assessed noninvasively today by liver stiffness measurements. Vibration-controlled transient elastography, shear wave elastography or magnetic resonance elastography are techniques increasingly used for this purpose.
METHODS: This article presents the recent advances in the use of new techniques for liver fibrosis assessment in chronic hepatitis C: the correlation between liver stiffness values and liver fibrosis estimated by liver biopsies, the prognosis role of liver stiffness values, their usefulness in monitoring the treatment response,

During hepatitis C virus (HCV) chronic infection, extrahepatic manifestations are frequent and polymorphous. This article reports on a large cohort of patients with HCV-related autoimmune or lymphoproliferative disorders, from mixed cryoglobulinemia vasculitis to frank lymphomas. The relationship between HCV infection and such immune-related diseases has been formally demonstrated by epidemiological, clinical, immunological and pathological data, and results of therapeutic trials. More recently, other nonliver-related HCV disorders have been reported, including cardiovascular (i.e. stroke, isc

Celiac disease is characterized by a gluten-induced damage of the small bowel in sensitive individuals that may cause malabsorption. Non-intestinal inflammatory diseases may trigger immunologic gluten intolerance in susceptible people and the HCV virus may be considered as a suitable candidate. Interferon therapy could precipitate symptom onset in subjects with silent celiac disease. In fact, symptoms such as diarrhea, anemia, and weight loss may occur during interferon therapy and are associated with serological positivity of anti-tranglutaminase antibodies. To date, considering the available

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is associated with several extrahepatic manifestations. Patients with HCV may develop mixed cryoglobulinemia and its sequelae, ranging from cutaneous and visceral vasculitis to glomerulonephritis and B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. HCV-infected patients have increased rates of insulin resistance, diabetes, and atherosclerosis, which may lead to increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Neurological manifestations of HCV infection include fatigue and cognitive impairment. The mechanisms causing the extrahepatic effects of HCV infection are likely m

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, a worldwide public health problem affecting 180 million patients, is Likely the cause of chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma. In Israel it is estimated that 100,000 people are infected with HCV, 25% are diagnosed and 20-22% were treated with antiviral agents. Advances in our understanding of the HCV lifecycle have led to development of direct acting antiviral agents (DAAs) therapies capable of increasing significantly the curative SVR rates in patients with HCV. New standard-of-care treatment has been approved in 20

The analysis of a problem state of chronic hepatitis C in children was conducted. Data on primary incidence of chronic hepatitis C at the children's population as on the territory of the Russian Federation, and abroad are submitted. Problems of diagnosis of a HCV infection are studied. The survey analysis of risk of contamination is carried out, possible ways of transfer are highlighted, features of a course of a HCV infection in children are shown, synchronising frequency of a process is displayed. The problem is analysed now, and further prospects in treatment of chronic viral hepatitis C in

The treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection with pegylated interferon alpha and ribavirin leads to a sustained virologic response in around 50% of patients with HCV genotype 1, 65% with HCV genotype 4, 75% with HCV genotype 3 and around 80% with HCV genotype 2. A better understanding of the HCV lifecycle has resulted in the development of several potential direct-acting antiviral drugs (DAAs) targeting viral proteins [NS3/4A protease inhibitors, NS5B nucleos(t)idic and non-nucleos(t)idic polymerase inhibitors, NS5A replication complex inhibitors]. This review summarizes the main clinica

The current treatment of patients with chronic HCV infection since ten years is pegylated interferon combined with ribavirin. This association allows a virological eradication in 55% of patients, all genotype and 40% of those infected with genotype 1, the most prevalent. Two protease inhibitors (telaprevir and boceprevir) were approved in 2011, in combination with pegylated interferon and ribavirin in both naïve and non-responder patients infected with HCV genotype 1. These new drugs allow obtaining a viral eradication in 70% of cases. Other direct acting antiviral drugs are also currently bei

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection remains a major global health burden. Hepatitis C causes significant liver-related morbidity and mortality due to hepatic decompensation and development of hepatocellular carcinoma. In addition, extra-hepatic manifestations of hepatitis C are frequent. There is a very large interindividual variability in the natural history of both acute and chronic hepatitis C which can be explained in part by a combination of various host, viral and environmental factors. Successful antiviral treatment can prevent short- and long-term complications of HCV infection in many p
