In the United States, hepatitis D is not a reportable condition, leading to gaps in epidemiological and clinical knowledge. We aim to estimate the incidence of hepatitis D-associated hospitalizations in the United States and describe the clinical, demographic and geographic characteristics of those hospitalizations. We utilized hospitalization data from the 2010-2018 National Inpatient Sample from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project. Hepatitis D and hepatitis B only (HBV only) hospitalizations were identified by International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) and Inter

The authors present a case of occupational HDV infection in a 38-year-old nurse, HBsAg carrier, injured by a needle contaminated with blood of a drug user infected with HIV, HBV and HCV. After 2 months she developed acute viral hepatitis. HBV, HCV, HIV, CMV, EBV and other non-viral liver diseases were excluded. Finally, based on the source of exposure with high probability of HDV infection, the patient's positive serological test for HDV, and the result of histological examination of the liver, the diagnosis of viral hepatitis type D was established. Our case report suggests the need to consid

A morphologic study with immunohistochemical detection of the viral antigens of hepatitis B and Delta was performed on 36 liver specimens from patients with delta positive chronic viral hepatitis B. Electron microscopy was performed in 9 cases. No light microscopic or ultrastructural features specific for hepatitis D were observed. Lymphocytic infiltration occurred more often close to hepatocytes containing either hepatitis Delta antigen or hepatitis B core antigen in the cytoplasm, suggesting an involvement of cellular immune mechanisms in chronic hepatitis D as well as in hepatitis B. The si

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Large-scale data on the hepatitis D virus (HDV)/hepatitis B virus (HBV) co-infection rate is needed to estimate the current epidemiology of HDV in China. This study aimed to estimate the current epidemiology of HDV.
METHODS: Patients with chronic HBV infection, with documented serum hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positivity for more than six months, were enrolled across China. Blood samples were collected at baseline for central evaluations of HDV antibody and HBsAg quantification. Assessments for antibodies of hepatitis A virus, hepatitis C virus, hepatitis E virus,

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis D virus (HDV), which requires the presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV), is a deadly yet neglected disease that rapidly leads to liver cancer and disease-induced mortality. This co-dependence creates complex transmission dynamics that make it difficult to predict the efficacy of interventions aimed at HBV and/or HDV control in endemic regions, such as certain municipalities of Brazil, where up to 65% of HBV-infected persons are co-infected.
METHODOLOGY: We created a mathematical model that captures the joint transmission dynamics of HBV and HDV, incorporating mother-to-chi

To investigate the prevalence and clinical features of hepatitis D virus infection (HDV) in childhood, total antibody to hepatitis D antigen (anti-HD) in serum samples from 247 children (29 with acute hepatitis B, 68 with chronic hepatitis B, and 150 with asymptomatic hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carriers with normal liver function profiles) were studied using solid-phase competitive radioimmunoassay. Anti-HD was detected in three of the 29 children with acute hepatitis B and in only one of the 68 with chronic hepatitis B; none of the serum specimens from 150 asymptomatic carriers with

Chimpanzees that were chronic hepatitis B virus carriers and that were superinfected with hepatitis D virus (HDV) apparently developed acute, self-limited type D hepatitis. Reevaluation with a sensitive hybridization-based assay using RNA probes specific for the HDV genome, however, demonstrated that greater than 50% of these animals still had detectable signs of ongoing HDV replication an average of 2.4 y (range, 1-6.4 y) after inoculation. The only positive marker for the presence of HDV was serum HDV RNA; HDV antigen was undetectable in both serum and the liver by an immunoblot assay and im

BACKGROUND & AIM: Hepatitis D virus (HDV) superinfection of patients with chronic HBV infection results in rapid progression to liver cirrhosis. Little is known about HDV-specific T cells and how they contribute to the antiviral immune response and liver disease pathogenesis.
METHODS: We isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 28 patients with chronic HDV and HBV infection, identified HDV-specific CD8+ T-cell epitopes, and characterized HDV-specific CD8+ T cells. We associated these with HDV sequence variations and clinical features of patients.
RESULTS: We identified 6 CD8+ T-cell

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is a defective RNA virus dependent on Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection for its replication and expression. All patients with HBV infection should be tested for the presence of HDV infection. It is estimated that approximately 5% of hepatitis B surface antigen (HbsAg) carriers in the world are HDV infected patients. HBV-HDV co-infection may lead to more severe acute disease and higher risks of fulminant hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma than those having HBV infection alone. Also, HBV infected patients with HDV super-infection have a hig

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Treatment of chronic delta hepatitis is long and difficult and better monitoring is needed.
METHODS: In this study, hepatitis delta virus (HDV) RNA, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA were retrospectively quantified in 53 patients with hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-negative chronic hepatitis delta. Twenty-one had received 28 courses of 3-5 MU interferon-alpha2b (IFN-alpha2b) thrice weekly for a median of 12.6 months (interquartile range [IQR]: 7.3-31.6), five had received eight courses of 100 mg lamivudine (LAM) daily for 23.6 months (IQR: 8.4

The AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-mediated energy-sensing signals play important roles in reprogramming the expression of inflammatory genes. In the present study, the potential effects of the AMPK activator 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide-1-β-D-ribofuranoside (AICAR) were investigated in a mouse model with LPS/D-Gal-induced acute hepatitis. Our experimental data indicated that treatment with AICAR suppressed the elevation of plasma aminotransferases and alleviated the histopathological abnormalities in mice exposed to LPS/D-Gal. Treatment with AICAR also inhibited the LPS/D-Gal-induced u

BACKGROUND: The geographic distribution of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and the hepatitis D virus (HDV) genotypes is uneven. We reconstructed the temporal evolution of HBV and HDV in Yakutia, one of the regions of Russia most affected by HBV and HDV, in an attempt to understand the possible mechanisms that led to unusual for Russia pattern of viral genotypes and to identify current distribution trends.
METHODS: HBV and HDV genotypes were determined in sera collected in 2018-2019 in Yakutia from randomly selected 140 patients with HBV monoinfection and 59 patients with HBV/HDV. Total 86 HBV and

Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and hepatitis D virus (HDV) coinfection are major causes of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The geographic distribution of CHB and alignment of anti-HDV testing with CHB burden remain poorly defined. We aimed to examine if anti-HDV testing and seropositivity align with areas of highest CHB burden. Adults with CHB (2014-2022) were identified using a validated serologic algorithm in the provincial laboratory database capturing HBV/HDV serology. Cases were geolocated to Aggregate Dissemination Areas (ADAs), linked to Alberta Health Services zones and rural-urban

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis D virus (HDV), a defective RNA virus which depends on hepatitis B virus (HBV) for its replication and expression, appears to be highly pathogenic and modifies the natural history of HBV infection. Two types of infection, co-infection and super-infection are recognised. During infection, anti-delta antibodies appear in serum and can be detected by Enzyme linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA).
OBJECTIVE: We determined the prevalence of hepatitis D infection amongst HBsAg-positive patients with HBV-related liver diseases in Accra, Ghana using an Enzyme linked Immunosorbent ass

OBJECTIVE: Hepatitis B, C, and delta virus (HBV, HCV, HDV) share similar transmission routes; thus, dual or triple infections may occur and even persist in the same patient. However, little is known about the presentations and course of chronic HBV infection with HCV and HDV markers, which this study examined.
METHODS: Antibodies against HCV (anti-HCV) and HDV (anti-HDV) were assayed as appropriate in patients with HBV infection. The clinical, pathological, and virological presentations as well as the course of the disease in patients with HBV/HDV/HCV triple infection markers were then review

Hepatitis D (HDV) is a severe infection with well-recognised clinical ramifications that remains relatively neglected and underdiagnosed; consequently, the epidemiology of HDV is poorly characterised, both in the United States and globally. In 2022, a pilot project involving eight healthcare institutions was undertaken to ascertain the prevalence of HDV in healthcare institutions with an HBV seropositivity of at least 1%, describe the characteristics of patients testing positive for HDV, and evaluate diagnostic and laboratory processes of HDV screening. From August 2022 to April 2024, a total

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Myrcludex B is a first-in-class compound, which blocks entry of hepatitis B and D virus into hepatocytes in vitro and in animal models. Based on the required preclinical data we aimed to translate this compound into the first application in humans.
METHODS: Single ascending doses of myrcludex B, a 47 amino acid peptide, were administered up to 20mg intravenously and 10mg subcutaneously in a prospective open first-in-human, phase I clinical trial to 36 healthy volunteers. Safety, tolerability and plasma concentrations of myrcludex B were assessed and a pharmacokinetic model
