Though the genomes of many rice herbivorous pests have recently been well characterized, little is known about the genome of their natural enemies. Here, by using the Illumina and PacBio platforms, we sequenced and assembled the whole genome of the mirid species Cyrtorhinus lividipennis Reuter (Hemiptera: Miridae), which is an economically and ecologically important natural enemy in the rice ecosystem acting as a dominant predator for planthoppers and leafhoppers in the field. Through Hi-C scaffolding, 1615 scaffolds with a total size of 338.08 Mb were successfully anchored onto 13 chromosomes

Understanding the effects of weather on insect population dynamics is crucial to simulate and forecast pest outbreaks, which is becoming increasingly important with the effects of climate change. The mirid bug Apolygus lucorum is an important pest on cotton, fruit trees and other crops in China, and primarily lays its eggs on dead parts of tree branches in the fall for subsequent overwintering. As such, the eggs that hatch the following spring are most strongly affected by ambient weather factors, rather than by host plant biology. In this study, we investigated the effects of three major weat

Cyanogenic compounds provide potent defenses to herbivorous insects, yet few species are known to acquire them from their food. Matador bugs, Bitta alipes (Hemiptera: Coreidae), have brightly colored signals that deter avian predators and are specialists of cyanogenic Passiflora plants. It is unknown whether these insects accumulate cyanogenic compounds. We document the first evidence of cyanogen accumulation in matador bugs. However, the presence and concentration of cyanogens depended on the Passiflora species from which insects were feeding. Further, three related species of inconspicuous C

The stink bug, Eocanthecona furcellata Wolff (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) shows significant promise as a biological control agent against lepidopteran pests in tropical and subtropical areas. However, securing suitable food remains a persistent issue for the mass rearing of this beneficial insect. To understand how different feeding strategies impact reproductive success, we evaluated their effects on critical life table parameters and ovary development using a range of feeding options: natural prey Spodoptera litura Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Spodoptera exigua Hubner, alternative pre

Vibroacoustic signalling is one of the dominant strategies of animal communication, especially in small invertebrates. Among insects, the order Hemiptera displays a staggering diversity of vibroacoustic organs and is renowned for possessing biomechanically complex elastic recoil devices such as tymbals and snapping organs that enable robust vibrational communication. However, our understanding of the evolution of hemipteran elastic recoil devices is hindered by the absence of relevant data in the phylogenetically important group known as moss bugs (Coleorrhyncha), which produce substrate-borne

BACKGROUND: The rice stalk stink bug Tibraca limbativentris (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is one of the most important rice pests in Brazil. The search for cultivars that tolerate insect injury is necessary to complement other less aggressive methods of pest suppression. The combination of integrated pest management tactics will reduce insecticide applications and improve the safety of food production. Here, we tested the tolerance response of Xingu, Canela de Ferro and Primavera rice genotypes in glasshouse experiments. In addition, we measured tolerance expressed in a variety of physiological re

Studies done in Brazilian soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merril, in the 1970s suggested the redbanded stink bug, Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood), is principally responsible for delayed maturity in this crop. This stink bug species has recently emerged as a serious pest of soybean in the southern United States, where little is known about its association with the occurrence of delayed maturity disorder. Also, the mechanism behind stink bug-induced soybean delayed maturity remains unknown. It is believed that stink bug feeding during pod development stages results in reduced pod-seed load, causing al

Fires can generate spatial variation in trophic interactions such as insect herbivory. If trophic interactions mediated by fire influence nutrient cycling, they could feed back on the more immediate consequences of fire on nutrient dynamics. Here we consider herbivore-induced effects on oak litter quality and decomposition within a long-term manipulation of fire frequency in central Minnesota, USA. We focused on bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) trees, which are common across the fire frequency gradient and are often heavily infested with either lace bugs (Corythuca arcuata) or aphids (Hoplochaithr

Insects can adapt their walking patterns to complex and varied environments and retain the ability to walk even after significant changes in their physical attributes, such as amputation. Although the interleg coordination of intact insects has been widely described in previous studies, the adaptive walking patterns in free-walking insects with amputation of 1 or more legs are still unclear. The pentatomid bug Erthesina fullo exhibits a tripod gait, when walking freely on horizontal substrates, like many other insects. In this study, amputations were performed on this species to investigate ch

BACKGROUND: The brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys has become an invasive insect pest of many crops. A promising control strategy to manage the proliferation of H. halys is based on the suppression of its obligate and vertically transmitted uncultivated symbiotic bacterium Candidatus Pantoea carbekii through surface-sterilization of H. halys eggs. Indeed, the application of antimicrobial formulations on the eggs of H. halys could cause mortality of endosymbiont and consequently of newly emerged nymphs. In this study, a microbial live/dead assay was applied directly on H. halys eggs t

A longstanding goal of evolutionary biology is to understand among-individual variation in resource allocation decisions and the timing of these decisions. Recent studies have shown that investment in elaborate and costly weapons can result in trade-offs with investment in testes. In this study, we ask the following questions: At what point plasticity in resource allocation to these different structures ceases during development, if at all? Furthermore, can individuals tailor their reproductive behavior to accompany structural changes? We experimentally addressed these questions in the insect

Pesticides are extensively used to control pests, diseases, and weeds in order to increase agricultural production. Usage of indiscriminate doses and persistent pesticides has not only caused resistance issues in insect pests but has also had deleterious effects on non-target organisms (beneficial insects, fish, and wildlife) and caused environmental contamination (soil, water, and air) through leaching, overflow, and insecticide spray drift. Exposure from eating food and drinking water contaminated to pesticide residues is also affecting human health. This study was conducted to obtain inform

Plant-sucking stinkbugs are especially associated with mutualistic gut bacterial symbionts. Here, we explored the symbiotic relationship of a pistachio stinkbug, Acrosternum heegeri Fieber by histological, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), real-time PCR and molecular phylogenetic techniques. Furthermore, the effects of the symbiont on the resting/wandering behaviors of the newborn nymphs, pre-adult survival rates, and stage compositions were investigated. Transmission electron microscopy and real-time PCR analyses showed that a rod-shaped gammaproteobacterium was persistently located

Previous work showed that females of the European tarnished plant bug, Lygus rugulipennis Poppius (Heteroptera: Miridae), produced three chemicals, hexyl butyrate, (E)-2-hexenyl butyrate, and (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal, and that these were suspected to be components of the female sex pheromone. In field experiments, traps baited with blends of these chemicals dispensed from polyethylene vials and sachets failed to catch significant numbers of males. Here, we report more recent field experiments in which the chemicals were released from glass microcapillary tubes. A blend of hexyl butyrate and (E)-4-o

Euschistus heros, a key pest of soybean in the Neotropical region, represents a growing challenge to sustainable agricultural production. With the urgent need for more targeted and environmentally safe control strategies, RNA interference (RNAi) emerges as an innovative tool. This study investigated the gene-silencing potential of RNAi targeting V-ATPase and act, two genes involved in essential cellular processes. The sensitivity of E. heros to RNAi in adult and immature stages was evaluated by microinjection of dsRNA, as well as the ex-vivo degradation of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) by nuclea

The Antecipe® system, in which maize is sown between soybean rows while soybean plants are still in the reproductive stage, reduces the production cycle of the soybean-maize crop system and, consequently, mitigate climatic risk for second-crop maize. However, the coexistence of both crops can intensify the 'green bridge,' favoring outbreaks of Diceraeus melacanthus. Thus, this study evaluated the host preference of D. melacanthus and the damage caused by different population densities to support management strategies in this system. The preference test was conducted in the greenhouse using cag

Insects in mid- to high latitudes predict unfavorable seasons through changing photoperiod, and undergo diapause to survive harsh conditions. The circadian clock and brain neurosecretory systems are key components in regulating photoperiodic diapause. However, the neuronal pathways linking these systems, and the neuropeptides involved in photoperiodic diapause, remain poorly understood. We investigated the role of corazonin (CRZ), a conserved neuropeptide regulating metabolic stress and reproduction, in the bean bug Riptortus pedestris, a species highly sensitive to short days for diapause ind

Rhagovelia oriander is a freshwater water strider native to the rivers and streams of North and South America, known for its distinctive skating movement on the water's surface. This movement resembles the correlated random-walk pattern seen in microorganisms such as Escherichia coli. Previous studies have primarily focused on limb adaptations and biomechanics, leaving the ecological significance inadequately addressed. We combine field observations with controlled laboratory experiments using a flow mill to investigate the dynamics of R. oriander under typical flow conditions. Our findings in

BACKGROUND: Saliva plays a crucial role in shaping the feeding behavior of insects, involving processes such as food digestion and the regulation of interactions between insects and their hosts. Cyrtorhinus lividipennis serves as a predominant natural enemy of rice pests, while Apolygus lucorum, exhibiting phytozoophagous feeding behavior, is a destructive agricultural pest. In this study, a comparative transcriptome analysis, incorporating the published genomes of C.lividipennis and A.lucorum, was conducted to reveal the role of salivary secretion in host adaptation.
RESULTS: In contrast to

Polyphenism allows organisms to respond to varying environmental conditions by adopting alternative collections of morphological traits, often leading to different reproductive strategies. In many insects, polyphenism affecting the development of flight trades dispersal ability for increased fecundity. The soapberry bug Jadera haematoloma (Hemiptera: Rhopalidae) exhibits wing polyphenism in response to juvenile nutritional resources and cohort density. Development of full-length wings and flight-capable thoracic muscles occurs more frequently in cohorts raised under low food density conditions
