The genus Nectogale, endemic to the Himalayas, Hengduan Mountains, and adjacent ranges, comprises highly specialized semi-aquatic shrews adapted to high-elevation streams. Its diversity has likely been underestimated because of limited sampling and morphological conservatism, leaving species limits and evolutionary relationships unresolved. Here, we combined whole-genome data with morphological evidence to delimit species, infer phylogenetic history, and test for introgression and demographic change. Our results support three species: Nectogale elegans, Nectogale sikhimensis, and a newly ident

BACKGROUND: The Darjeeling Hill Region (DHR) has numerous freshwater bodies, such as hill streams, springs, and temporary water pools. It receives abundant rainfall and has extensive forest cover, which together play vital roles in sustaining frog diversity. Amolops marmoratus is among the notable hillstream frogs, known for its wide geographic distribution and status as a local delicacy. Thus, A. marmoratus is an important subject for studying genetic divergence and population structure along with anthropogenic pressure. This research investigates the standard morphological characteristics an

INTRODUCTION: Saussurea costus, an important critically endangered medicinal herb native to the Himalayan region, is commonly used in various ailments, viz. asthma, ulcer, inflammation, and stomach problems. In the international market, the dry roots and essential oil of S. costus has become an important drug. The lack of appropriate fertilizer dose recommendations is one of the limiting factors for its ex-situ conservation and large-scale cultivation, as plant nutrition is vital in determining crop growth and productivity. The study aimed to understand the comparative impact of different leve

The pristine Himalayas are sensitive to pollutants from different source regions, including its foothills that have adverse effects on air quality and climate. Despite this, there are no observations of aromatic hydrocarbons in the central Himalayas. Thus, online observations of aromatics (C6-C8, defined here as BTEX) were conducted for the first time at the mountain site (Nainital, 1958 m) in the central Himalayas during January 2017-December 2022 period. Additionally, observations were made at a foothill site in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (Haldwani, 554 m) to assess the source features. The diu

The morphological, biochemical, and physiological characteristics of a phosphate solubilizing and antagonistic bacterial strain, designated as B0, isolated from a sub-alpine Himalayan forest site have been described. The isolate is gram negative, rod shaped, 0.8 x 1.6 microm in size, and psychrotrophic in nature that could grow from 0 to 35 degrees C (optimum temp. 25 degrees C). It exhibited tolerance to a wide pH range (3-12; optimum 8.0) and salt concentration up to 4% (w/v). Although it was sensitive to kanamycin, gentamicin, and streptomycin (<10 microg mL(-1)), it showed resistance to hi

Rainfed maize production in the hilly ecosystem of Northeastern Himalayas often suffers from moisture and soil acidity induced abiotic stresses. The present study measured evapotranspiration loss (ETc) of maize crop under controlled condition (pot experiment) of water deficit (W25-25 % and W50-50 % of field capacity soil moistures) and well watered (W100 = 100 % of field capacity (FC)) regimes in strong acid soils (pH = 4.3) of the Northeastern Himalayan Region of India. The response of soil ameliorants (lime) and phosphorus (P) nutrition under differential water regimes on ETc losses and wate

Every year millions of people die due to fatal waterborne diseases around the world especially in developing countries like India. Sikkim, a northeastern state of India, greatly depends on natural water sources. About 80% of the population of Sikkim depends on natural spring water for domestic as well as agricultural use. Recent waterborne disease outbreaks in the state raises a concerning question on water quality. In this study, we analyzed water quality especially for the detection of Enterobacteriaceae members from four districts of the state. Isolation with selective culture media techniq

Climate change is expected to profoundly influence high-elevation Himalayan ecosystems, where steep environmental gradients and narrow climatic tolerances render alpine plant communities particularly sensitive to environmental changes. Many threatened Himalayan medicinal plants occur near alpine-sub-alpine ecotones associated with upper forest limits, and shifts in their distribution may reflect broader ecosystem responses to climate change. Anticipating such range dynamics is essential for biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource management in climate-sensitive mountain landscapes.

The andromonoecy is an unusual sex expression in trees in which an individual plant bears both functionally staminate and hermaphrodite flowers on the inflorescences. This study aims to investigate the effect of crown layers on the floral biology and reproductive effort of Aesculus indica (Wall. ex Camb.) Hook. The results revealed that the peak period of anthesis was between 06:00 and 08:00 h of the day. Male flower production was predominantly higher as compared to the perfect flowers on the inflorescences. There was no significant variation between total pollen production in staminate and p

Moisture carried by the mid-latitude westerlies is an important source of water for the Asian Water Towers (AWTs), but how this moisture crosses the high Himalaya has remained unclear. Here, we use a tethered balloon to measure atmospheric water vapor and its isotopic compositions (δDv and d-excessv) from the surface to 9050 m above sea level in late spring (May 2022) on the northern side of Mt. Qomolangma. These measurements show that the westerlies can transport moisture from the south of the Himalaya across the high-altitude barrier, particularly above 7000 m above sea level, into the AWTs.

Superoxide dismutases are the enzymes involved in dismutation of superoxide radicals into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. The present work reports a thermostable Fe/Mn SOD of Geobacillus sp. strain PCH100 (GsSOD) isolated from glacial soil. Purified recombinant GsSOD is a dimeric protein of ~57 kDa that exhibited highest activity at a temperature of 10 °C and pH of 7.8. Maximum enzyme velocity and Michaelis constant of the GsSOD were 1098.90 units/mg and 0.62 μM, respectively. At 80 °C, thermal inactivation rate constant and half-life of GsSOD were 3.33 × 10-3 min-1 and 208 min, respectively. In

Coccidiosis remains a major challenge in the global poultry industry, exacerbated by the emergence of resistance to conventional anticoccidial drugs. This study investigates the anticoccidial potential of lavender essential oil (LEO), extracted from Lavandula angustifolia cultivated in the Kashmir Himalayas, both in-vitro and in-vivo. Eimeria species from the infected samples were subjected to ITS-1 rDNA analysis for molecular confirmation. This approach validated five of the seven Eimeria species identified morphologically in the pooled sample, with the confirmed isolates showing a high degre
