Five hundred ninety-six patients age > or = 65 with femoral neck or intertrochanteric fractures were allowed immediate unrestricted weight bearing after surgery and were prospectively followed. Follow-up data and hospital records were examined to identify those patients who required additional hip surgery owing to failure of fixation, nonunion, osteonecrosis, or prosthetic dislocation. Four hundred seventy-three patients were available for 1-year minimum follow-up; 16 patients (3.4%) required additional hip surgery. The revision surgery rate after intertrochanteric fracture due to loss of fixa

OBJECTIVE: Although several prognostic models have been developed for patients who underwent hip fracture surgery, their preoperative performance was insufficiently validated. We aimed to verify the effectiveness of the Nottingham Hip Fracture Score (NHFS) for predicting postoperative outcomes following hip fracture surgery.
METHODS: This was a single-center and retrospective analysis. A total of 702 elderly patients with hip fractures (age ≥ 65 years old) who received treatment in our hospital from June 2020 to August 2021 were selected as the research participants. They were divided into th

INTRODUCTION: standardised protocols for the care of geriatric hip fractures demonstrate improved patient outcomes with decreased cost. The purpose of this study is to evaluate outcomes of a standardised hip fracture protocol at an urban safety-net hospital.
METHODS: All trauma patients presenting to our urban safety-net hospital are included in a trauma database and inpatient outcomes recorded. A hip fracture protocol was introduced at our institution in 2015, which depended on admission to a monitored setting due to the absence of a geriatric co-management service. The database was queried

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) and hip fractures are both prevalent in the elderly population. The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature regarding the association between AF and hip fractures, and the impact of AF on hip fracture prognosis.
METHODS: The literature search was performed using PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase and Scopus. Inclusion was based upon the application of eligibility criteria in duplicate prior to data extraction with a standardized form.
RESULTS: A total of 42 studies met the inclusion criteria. AF prevalence was found to vary between 6.5% and 35%

BACKGROUND: Although even in the elderly most falls are not associated with fractures, over 90 percent of hip fractures are the result of a fall. Few studies have assessed whether the risk factors for falls are also important risk factors for hip fracture.
METHODS: To examine the importance of risk factors for falls in the epidemiology of hip fracture, we performed a case-control study of 174 women (median age, 80 years) admitted with a first hip fracture to 1 of 30 hospitals in New York and Philadelphia. Controls, matched to the case patients according to age and hospital, were selected from

UNLABELLED: In Korean, atypical subtrochanteric fractures (ASF) were rare. Higher BMI and use of bisphosphonate were significant risk factors of ASF.
INTRODUCTION: Recently, ASF have been reported to increase among patients on bisphosphonate. However, the incidence of ASF and the association between ASF and bisphosphonate use have not been well defined in Asian population. Our purposes are (1) to estimate the proportion of ASF among Korean patients with proximal femur fracture and (2) to determine the associated risk factors of ASF in the Korean patients.
METHODS: We conducted a multicenter

SUMMARY: Hospital diagnosis codes are useful for assessing hip fracture rates in large populations. However, these codes do not reliably differentiate hip fractures that occur in the subtrochanteric region. Identification of subtrochanteric fractures requires review of radiographic images to distinguish these fractures from the more commonly occurring trochanteric fractures.
PURPOSE: This study examines the accuracy of coded hospital diagnoses for hip fracture compared to fracture site verification based on operative and radiologic data. The variability in subtrochanteric fracture assignment

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a common medical condition in older ages. A devastating result of osteoporosis may be a hip fracture with up to 30% mortality rate in one year. The compliance rate of osteoporotic medication following a hip fracture is 20% in the western world.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of the fracture liaison service (FLS) model in the orthopedic department on patient compliance following hip fracture.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all patients with hip fracture who were involved with FLS. We collected data regarding kidney function, calcium levels, par

In general, all traumatic dislocations of the hip must be treated as surgical emergencies. Multiple attempts at closed reduction are contraindicated, particularly in Type V dislocations. Every effort must be made to recognize the dislocation, particularly in patients with other severe lower extremity trauma. Reduction within 24 hours gives better results than late reductions. Roentgenograms of the pelvis must include both hips after closed or open procedures as a check for a concentric reduction of the hip. Any abnormality, or failure to reduce the avulsed head fragment, demands an immediate h

AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess differences in the clinical profile and baseline characteristics between patients with femoral neck fracture (FNF) and trochanteric fracture (TF). The secondary aim was to explore potential differences in clinical outcomes and mortality.
METHODS: A prospective hip fracture database (FAMMI) was used to obtain data for this observational cohort study. Patients with hip fracture surgery between January 2018 and February 2021 who were aged older than 70 years were prospectively included. Differences between patients with FNF and TF were evaluated by univa

Secondary hip fractures (SHFs) rarely occur after intramedullary nailing (IMN) fixation without femoral neck fixation for atypical femoral fractures (AFFs). We report three cases of older Japanese women who sustained SHFs presumably caused by osteoporosis and peri-implant stress concentration around the femoral neck after undergoing IMN without femoral neck fixation for AFF. All cases were fixed with malalignment. In AFF patients, postoperative changes due to postoperative femoral bone malalignment may affect the peri-implant mechanical environment around the femoral neck, which can result in

BACKGROUND: Owing to the aging population, the incidence of hip fractures is increasing. While concomitant fractures are not uncommon, it is unclear how they influence subsequent function.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: Therefore, we determined (1) the incidence, type and treatment of concomitant fractures accompanying hip fractures, (2) the length of hospital stay, (3) the impact of concomitant fractures on mortality and complication rate, and (4) patients' function.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 402 patients older than 60 years with hip fractures. We recorded the presence of concomitant fractu

AIMS & OBJECTIVES: Hip fractures lead to significant morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs, particularly in elderly populations. Understanding the mechanisms underlying these fractures is crucial for developing targeted prevention strategies and counseling patients.
METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was utilized to identify a cohort of 25,068 hip fractures from 2013 to 2022. The inclusion criteria mandated classification as a lower trunk fracture and explicit mention of hip fracture in the narrative. Patient age, race, sex, incident location, the time of

We treated 15 patients with chronic unreduced hip fracture-dislocations at our hospital; all patients sustained the fracture-dislocations in motor vehicle accidents. All presented to our institution more than 6 months after initial treatment at their local hospitals with uncontained femoral heads; all underwent 1-stage total hip arthroplasty with bone grafting. These patients were monitored for a mean of 71.5 months (range, 36-96 months). All patients had significantly decreased pain, increased function, and increased range-of-motion scores using the Merle d'Aubigné scoring system. All grafts

BACKGROUND: Hip fracture is a common problem among older Americans. Two types of procedures are available for repairing hip fractures: hip replacement and open or closed reduction with or without internal fixation. The assumption has been that hip replacement produces better functional outcomes. Although that is the common wisdom, outcome studies evaluating hip replacement for treatment of hip fracture are few and have not clearly documented its superiority.
OBJECTIVES: To compare outcomes of hip fracture patients who receive hip replacement versus another stabilizing procedure (open or close

Background/Objectives: The increase in life expectancy and the share of the elderly population has the effect of increasing the number of osteoporotic hip fractures. At the same time, the number of total hip arthroplasty (THA) interventions is continuously increasing. The objective of this study is to investigate the incidence rates of hip fractures during the period 2008-2019, in Romania, among people who are at least 40 years old, as well as to determine the extent to which the increase in the prevalence of people who have undergone THA has affected the incidence of hip fractures, given that
