For many societies in the world onanism is taboo because of religious and medical ethics. From ancient times until the present day this type of body sensation is disclaimed by modern communities like a recurrent theme. After the discovery of the mechanism of fertilisation by the biologist Eduard van Beneden (1846-1910) in 1875 the feminine clitoris was declared to be a dispensable organ. The clitoris was suspected of causing hysteria, epilepsy and other forms of insanity. In the eighteenth century masturbation performed by young men was classified as a consumptive disease that caused inevitabl

The modern understanding of the pathogenesis of migraine, based on the concept that it is a neurovascular disorder, is often thought to have emerged from the work of Harold Wolff in the period 1932-1962. However, over the preceding 300 years, from William Harvey onwards, various hypotheses of the pathogenesis of migraine had been proposed, a few bearing reasonably strong resemblances to Wolff's ideas, though based on less adequate evidence. Many of these earlier hypotheses regarded migraine either primarily as a vascular (e.g., Willis, Wepfer, Latham) or as a neural disorder (e.g., Harvey, Lie

In 1702, Van Leeuwenhoek was the first to describe the phenomenon of anhydrobiosis in a species of bdelloid rotifer, Philodina roseola. It is the purpose of this review to examine what has been learned since then about the extreme desiccation tolerance in rotifers and how this compares with our understanding of anhydrobiosis in other organisms. Remarkably, much of what is known today about the requirements for successful anhydrobiosis, and the degree of biostability conferred by the dry state, was already determined in principle by the time of Spallanzani in the late 18th century. Most modern

Diet is the basic treatment of every diabetic patient. The first diabetic diet was described in detail by John Rollo in 1797. During the second half of the 19th century and first half of the 20th century great changes as regards the composition of the diabetic diet occurred. The findings on the association of atherosclerosis and fat intake led to a reduction of fat in the diabetic diet. A great deal of research in the seventies and eighties of this century was devoted to exchange of foods in the diabetic diet with regard to the carbohydrate content or the rise of the blood sugar after their in

In 1833 Dupuytren described what he referred to as an "affectation" of the palmar aponeurosis. This disorder continues to bear his name a century and a half later despite the fact that Dupuytren was not the first to describe it. The author contemplates the contributions of Felix Platter, Henry Cline, and Sir Astley Cooper in the management of this "maladie."

500 years ago Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, called Paracelsus, was born near Einsiedeln, the famous place of pilgrimage in Switzerland. Two gynecologists who later on became well-known medicohistorians--Bernhard Aschner (born in Vienna) and Paul Diepgen (born in Aachen)--created the basis for a summary of the etiopathogenetic ideas and therapeutic experiences of Paracelsus in gynecology. One must be aware of the fact that, living in a period between the Middle Ages and modern times, the great physician was not always able to differentiate between metaphysics and physics, e.g. in regard

The breakout of leprosy in the history of Norway was influenced by two factors at least. It was partly because Norway was ruled by neighbouring countries for a long time so was underdeveloped, and partly it was a country with temperate marine climate. Leprosy came from Western Europe to Norway during the Viking Age (790-1066 CE) and peaked in the 13th century when Norway was christianised and fully integrated with Europe with its participation in the crusades. At that time, the Christian Church cared for leprosy patients through its affiliated leprosariums. Leprosy nearly disappeared in Norway

In 1683, a self-proclaimed apothecary physician and London professor of physick by the name of Guilelmus (William) Salmon authored a pharmacopoeia titled Doron medicum, the 'gift of medicine' (Greek/Latin translation). This text formulates an English supplement to the Latin Materia medica (16th century), discussing internal and external compound medicines of the late 17th century. This pharmacopoeia enabled those incapable of reading Latin to provide medical care to a challenging post-plague community. Opiology, mercury, dragon's blood, willow bark, animal preparations and therapies now consid

Bell's palsy is named after Sir Charles Bell (1774-1842), who has long been considered to be the first to describe idiopathic facial paralysis in the early 19th century. However, it was discovered that Nicolaus Anton Friedreich (1761-1836) and James Douglas (1675-1742) preceded him in the 18th century. Recently, an even earlier account of Bell's palsy was found, as observed by Cornelis Stalpart van der Wiel (1620-1702) from The Hague, The Netherlands in 1683. Because our current knowledge of the history of Bell's palsy before Bell is limited to a few documents, it is interesting to discuss Sta

The author gives four examples of pictures representing the plague: "The Plague of Asdod" by Nicolas Poussin, a picture of Saint Roch by the Master of Frankfort, "Saint Roch Interceding for the Plague-stricken" by Peter Paul Rubens and "The Sisters of Saint Elisabeth Hospital in Antwerp and the Works of Mercy" by Jacob Jordaens.

After having recalled the history of the Order and its settling in Malta, the author evokes the Holy Infirmary, the great epidemics, the study of anatomy and pharmacy. The Holy Infirmary was founded at the end of the 16th century by the Great Master Jean de la Valette simultaneously with the town bearing his name. There hospital conditions were unusually good. The epidemics were favorized by the geographical situation of the Island exposed to the infectious diseases spreading from Asia and Africa: in 1591 a plague epidemic or of a very deadly influenza; in 1675 another plague epidemic was stil
