History of the hip joint pectineofoveal fold.

Although Josias Weitbrecht described the retinacula of the hip joint in his 1742 Syndesmologia, the anatomist Cesare Amantini of Perugia specifically studied the medial retinacula he referred to as the pectineofoveal fold in a late 19th-century monograph. This particular synovial fold stretches from the lesser trochanter to the osteocartilaginous junction of the femoral head along a virtual line connecting the lesser trochanter and the fovea for the ligament of the head. Although mentioned by some anatomists and radiologists, and despite its possible involvement in specific hip joint pathologi

Historical ethnopharmacology of the herbalists from Krummhübel in the Sudety Mountains (seventeenth to nineteenth century), Silesia.

BACKGROUND: Krummhübel (after 1945, Karpacz) in the Sudety Mountains (now SW Poland) was called "the village of pharmacists". At the end of the seventeenth century, there were 57 households, of which about 40 were inhabited by herbalists. Krummhübel herbalists were the first in the Sudety region who applied medicinal mixtures for the treatment of various diseases (using, among others, plants, oils, minerals and even viper venom) in contrast to previous herbalists who only indicated the use of individual plant species for specific diseases. Riesengebirge (in Polish Karkonosze) potions were sold

[History of compulsory immunization].

Mandatory vaccination was introduced for the first time in the nineteenth century in some European countries following the then sweeping smallpox epidemics. Compulsory vaccination for some diseases is still extant in some countries like Italy, France, Greece, Portugal and Belgium; in other countries, like the United Kingdom and Finland, vaccinations are voluntary but the state pursues a policy of active promotion. In 2007, the Veneto Region of Italy government approved a law allowing the experimentation of the abolition of mandatory vaccination. This experimentation caused an important debate

Chapter 37: alexia and agraphia.

Studies of alexia and agraphia have played important roles in understanding how complex cognitive functions are related to brain structure and activity. Modern interests in brain-behavior relations began during the second half of the 19th century as an outgrowth of flawed correlative studies by neuroanatomist Franz Gall and subsequent clinical-pathological analyses by Jean-Baptiste Boulliaud on speech and the frontal lobes. In 1856, Louis Victor Marcé drew attention to writing disorders and postulated a cerebral faculty for writing. Following Paul Broca's epochal reports on aphemia, many Europ

Variations on a theme.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is responsible for the second-leading cancer-related death toll worldwide. Although sorafenib and levantinib as frontline therapy and regorafenib, cabazantinib and ramicurimab have now been approved for second-line therapy, the therapeutic benefit is in the range of only a few months with respect to prolongation of survival. Aggressiveness of HCC is mediated by metastasis. Intrahepatic metastases and distant metastasis to the lungs, lymph nodes, bones, omentum, adrenal gland and brain have been observed. Therefore, the identification of metastasis-related new tar

[On the development of the infectology service in Novi Sad].

INTRODUCTION: Infectious diseases are a part of the history of this region. Devastating epidemics of plague, smallpox, and cholera were frequent during the 18th and the 19th centuries. Other infectious diseases were a serious problem as well: alimentary tract infections, scarlet fever, diphtheria, whooping cough. Geographic position, climate, migrations, as well as the tradition and lack of medical staff and medications, affected the frequency and outcome of infections. THE HISTORY OF THE TREATMENT OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES: Patients with infectious diseases were first treated at home. Later, a

Osteoporosis: the evolution of a scientific term.

Coined in French in the early 1820s as a mere description of a pathological state of the bone, the term 'osteoporosis' made its way into the English medical vocabulary only in the twentieth century. Unlike other medical concepts, which have not been substantially altered by progress in medical research, the definition of osteoporosis has constantly reflected the state of knowledge on the phenomenon itself. Over its 170 years of evolution, this definition has continuously sought to maintain a difficult balance between physiological and clinical criteria. Even at present, while the 1990 Consensu

Digoxin--a redundant drug in congestive cardiac failure.

Controversy continues concerning the use of digoxin as a positive inotropic agent in the treatment of heart failure in patients in sinus rhythm. Digoxin is properly used to control the heart rate in patients in atrial fibrillation. The findings from 14 uncontrolled and 6 controlled clinical trials have been examined. Digoxin does exert a small chronic positive inotropic effect. Although some individual patients, particularly those with fluid overload, appear to benefit from digoxin, controlled clinical trials in patients, most of whom have been treated with diuretics, have failed to demonstrat

[From the history of pancreatology and pancreatitis classification].

The retrogastric location, small size and soft consistency of the pancreas were the reason for the late discovery of the physiology of this organ. The first information about the anatomy and physiology of the pancreas appeared only in the 16th-17th centuries. The role of the pancreas in digestion was studied in the 18th-19th centuries, its participation in carbohydrate metabolism - in the 19th century, and insulin was discovered in the first half of the 20th century. Clinical signs of pancreatitis were first described in the early 19th century, but diagnosis of this disease still presents cert

Essential tremor.

Essential tremor (ET) is among the most common neurological disorders. This chapter reviews the epidemiology, clinical features, and pathophysiology of ET. The defining feature is a kinetic tremor of the arms. Patients often have a postural tremor as well. Other body regions may also be involved (especially the head). The severity of tremor may range from mild cases in population settings to more severe cases in treatment settings. Motor features aside from tremor have been described in ET, including tandem gait difficulty. Mild cognitive changes (especially executive dysfunction) have been do

GIGANTISM AND ACROMEGALY THROUGH HISTORY.

Giants and acromegalists have long captured attention, and they were often almost mythical creatures of great strength and power. Due to their expressive appearance, they were recorded in myths and works of art much earlier than they were of interest to medical practitioners. The first recognition was made by a Dutch physician Johannes Wier in 1567, but the first description and appellation originated by Pierre Marie in 1886. Involvement and interest from neurosurgeons followed, and in 1907, Hermann Schloffer performed the first transsphenoidal surgery in a patient with pituitary adenoma. In 1

History of venereology in Croatia.

The term sexually transmitted infections has a wider meaning than the older venereal diseases. It is known that gonorrhea was present even in ancient times, whereas syphilis appeared in Europe at the end of the 15(th) century. Soon cases were observed along the coast in Zadar, Dubrovnik and Istria, and were treated by surgeons. The relatively late establishment of medical schools, along with wars and different governments, were some of the reasons why dermatovenereology as a specialty developed later in Croatia than in other European countries. Nevertheless, during the 19(th) century, many Cro
