Down syndrome: comments and reflections on the 50th anniversary of Lejeune's discovery.

Over the past some 160 years, the study of Down syndrome (DS) went from early efforts of differentiating it from cretinism (Séguin) to its establishment as a specific nosologic category of mental deficiency (Down) and subsequent attempts to infer its cause. DS was known to be an overwhelmingly sporadic disorder, concordant in MZ and discordant in DZ twins and associated with increased maternal reproductive age (Penrose). Beginning in the 1920s and based in part on phenotype analysis and early cytogenetic insights in Drosophilia, several clinicians (Halbertsma, Waardenburg, Bleyer, Fanconi) and

Treatment of crystal arthropathy--history and advances.

The history of gout and the many distinguished historical figures who have suffered the agonies of this crystal deposition disorder have claimed the attention of medical historians like no other disease. Its treatment with uric acid lowering drugs became a twentieth century paradigm for the successful management and prevention of a chronic rheumatic disease, but the colorful history of the treatment of gout and crystal deposition disorders stretches back over 4,000 years.

Gambling in Canada, from vice to disease to responsibility: a negotiated history.

Gamblers and gambling have been variously viewed as derelict, immoral or criminal. Since the mid-1960s, notions of gambling generally and excessive gambling specifically have been reconstructed. Gambling, if done in moderation, is today generally viewed as an acceptable form of leisure. Those who gamble to the extent that relationships, family, friends, physical, social and mental heath, employment, or finances are adversely affected are now regarded as having a problem and offered government-sponsored therapeutic intervention. Recent developments in this transformative process have witnessed

The history of colostomy in childhood.

The idea of performing a colostomy in a child was first brought up by Littré in 1710. It lasted, however, 50 years until the first successful operation was published. Especially in the 19th century various ways to approach the colon have been practiced with frequently disappointing results (lumbar, inguinal approach). Only at the end of the century, colostomy was used as a guide for a pull-through operation. With improved surgical and anaesthesiological techniques, colostomy has gained more importance as a temporary measure in order to postpone definitive surgery. Various new techniques have b

Cholesterol and Its Journey Over the Centuries (1769-2025): The Highlights and Challenges.

Cholesterol is a beneficial lipid molecule considering its multifunctional roles to support physiological homeostasis and the progression of biological system at various levels, namely, membrane integrity, cushioning quality, nutrient skill, as well as its ventures as metabolic forerunner, for example, precursor of bile acids and bile salts, vitamin D, steroid hormones, and so on. On the other hand, excess load of cholesterol in systemic compartments, for example, blood vessels, and intracellular or intraorganellar rooms may end up with serious detrimental consequences, namely, heart attack, d

A parasitological study on the possible toilet ruins of the Japanese colonial period in Korea.

In the past decade, experts have conducted parasitological research on archaeological specimens in Korea to collect historical parasite infection data. In these studies, parasitologists successfully described the infection pattern of each parasite species in history. However, in the first half of the 20th century, archaeoparasitological reports have been scant. In 2021, we conducted a parasitological examination of a toilet-like structure that emerged in the early 20th century. This structure was built by stacking 2 wooden barrels; and in the study samples, we found ancient Trichuris trichiura

The history of smallpox.

The history of smallpox, from its probable origin 3000 to 6000 years ago to its worldwide eradication in 1978, is a fascinating story. A feared infection, even today, smallpox has caused the deaths of millions of people and disfigured many. This article describes the possible origin of the infection and traces its progress throughout the world. The introduction of inoculation with material from smallpox lesions and vaccination using cowpox virus is described. The World Health Organization's successful smallpox eradication program in the 1960s and 1970s is described. Personal experience of this

Epilepsy and violence: historical misconceptions, scientific evidence, and legal realities.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy has historically been mischaracterized as a disorder associated with aggression and criminal behavior. Misconceptions dating back to the 19th century, particularly those propagated by Cesare Lombroso, have contributed to persistent stigma and misinformed legal interpretations. METHODS: This narrative review examines the historical, clinical, neuroscientific, and legal literature on the purported link between epilepsy and violent behavior. Key seizure phases-ictal, postictal, and interictal-are analyzed alongside recent findings from psychiatric comorbidity studies and for

[Addison's disease: looking to the past and the future].

In 1849, Thomas Addison discovered alterations in the adrenal glands at autopsy of three patients who had died with idiopathic anemia. Struck by Addison's work, Charles-Edouard Brown-Séquard demonstrated in 1851 that bilateral adrenalectomy in dogs was fatal. It was not until 1950 that the discovery of the hormones of the adrenal cortex, their structure and their biological effects allowed Kendall, Reichstein and Hench to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Nowadays, autoimmune adrenalitis accounts for almost 80 % of cases diagnosed with Addison's disease. The causes of this serious

A crisis of meaning: can 'schizophrenia' survive in the 21st century?

Both within clinical and wider societal discourses, the term 'schizophrenia' has achieved considerable potency as a signifier, privileging particular conceptual frames for understanding and responding to mental distress. However, its status has been subject to instability, as it has lacked indisputable biological correlates that would anchor its place within the canon of medical diagnosis. Informed by a semiotic perspective, this paper focuses on its recent history: how 'schizophrenia' has been claimed, appropriated and contested-and how this connects with its earlier history of signification.

Meige's syndrome: History, epidemiology, clinical features, pathogenesis and treatment.

'Meige's syndrome' is a type of cranial dystonia characterized by blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia and can be associated with complex movement of lower facial muscles, mouth, jaw, tongue, pharyngeal and cervical muscles. Frequently, blepharospasm is the earliest clinical manifestation, which spreads over a period of time to involve other cranial and extra-cranial muscles. Common characteristics of this syndrome are well known, but their variety is wide. Different eponyms such as "Breughel syndrome", "Wood syndrome", "Blepharospasm plus", "Segmental cranial dystonia" and "Segmental cran

Gaucher disease: a comprehensive review.

Gaucher disease (GD) is an inherited error of metabolism due to a deficiency of glucocerebrosidase. This leads to excessive storage of glucocerebroside in the liver, spleen, bone, and bone marrow. Patients develop anemia, thrombocytopenia, hepatosplenomegaly, bone infarcts, aseptic necrosis of bone, and osteoporosis. There are three types of GD; types 2 and 3 have neurological involvement. With the advent of enzyme replacement therapy and substrate reduction therapy, the natural history of the disease has been has significantly changed, with a marked decrease in morbidity, especially for type

[Manic-depressive psychosis - bipolar disorder - an affective spectrum: a change of paradigms].

A key role of cyclicity or polarity in the development of mood disorders is examined in the light of historical analysis of the concepts of these disorders. A critical analysis of the current trends in the study of bipolar spectrum disorders (suggestions on a new definition of hypomania, broadening of the diagnostic boundaries of bipolar disorders in the field that have not been regarded previously as pathological ones or in connection with bipolar disorders, supporting evidence for conceptual continuum between bipolar and unipolar disorders) is presented. Further studies in this field are war

Learning from the past: historical aspects of bacterial toxins as pharmaceuticals.

Botulinum neurotoxins are the most poisonous substances known to humankind, but also are the bacterial toxins most frequently used as pharmaceuticals to benefit humans. The discovery of botulinum toxins and development into a useful drug is unique and fascinating, dating back to the early 19th century, when Justinus Kerner first recognized that botulism was caused by a biological toxin and suggested its use for medicinal purposes. This was translated into reality in 1980, when Alan Scott for the first time used the toxins to successfully treat strabismus. Now a subset of botulinum toxins are w

Follicular lymphoma: a historical overview.

Lymphoma was first described in 1862 and follicular lymphoma in 1925. Initially considered a benign disorder, and named Brill - Symmers disease after the authors of the original papers, it was rapidly recognized as a malignancy with a variable but often indolent course. Most of its clinical features were described by the early 1940s. Despite discussion about its cell of origin, and in contrast to many other lymphoma subtypes, follicular lymphoma could always be accurately recognized and diagnosed using light microscopy morphological features. B-cell origin was demonstrated in the 1970s and the

[Historical development of tuberculosis since Robert Koch's discovery of the tubercle bacillus in 1882].

Robert Koch's single-handed discovery of M. tuberculosis, one of the most gigantic scientific accomplishments of all times, provided the necessary foundation for subsequent investigative breakthroughs that have made it possible for experts to begin to contemplate the ultimate eradication of TB: the dreaded pestilence that for centuries was the greatest cause of death in the world. Further important milestones in the fight against TB were the discovery of X-rays, the development of BCG vaccination, the introduction of chemotherapy and chemoprophylaxis, and deciphering the genome of Mycobacteriu
