Climate change is intensifying the frequency and severity of heatwaves, posing growing risks for workers. Home care workers face heightened heat risks due to physically demanding tasks, rising patient needs, frequent travel, and limited access to cooling environments. This study aims to causally evaluate the effectiveness of an app-based intervention (REHEAT strategy) in reducing adverse effects of heatwaves among Swiss home care workers. This multicenter, unblinded, randomized controlled trial (RCT) will involve 350 home care workers from the regions of Northern and Southern Switzerland. Part

INTRODUCTION: Home care workers (HCWs) are paid caregivers who provide support to patients with chronic conditions and functional limitations. Additionally, they provide emotional support to patients and familial support. Although several qualitative studies have been conducted on HCWs, they focused more on studying prevalently the lived experiences about the workplace violence, the end of life, stressor and resilience, during the COVID-19 pandemic or focused more in dementia and heart failure, but not on feelings and working conditions.
METHODS: The study was carried out using Cohen's phenom

The emergence of AIDS as a social and historical phenomenon has brought along with it specters held in social imagination, aggravating the concept of plague, generating strong feelings and prejudice, becoming a stigma. Such factors ultimately affect HIV bearers' well being. Thus, this study aims to understand the dimension of the problem of HIV bearers who have not seeked treatment in the National Health System and the reasons which make this search so difficult. The adopted methodological approach was thematic oral accounts. Five HIV bearers collaborated in this study. By using content analys

The purpose of this article is to begin applying the principles of the psychology of forgiveness to people who are without homes and people who are in prisons. A review of the literature shows trauma for both groups. When the trauma is caused by unjust treatment by others, then excessive anger can result, compromising one's psychological and physical health. We review the interventions that have been offered for those without homes and the imprisoned to examine which existing programmes address such anger. Forgiveness Therapy, although untried in these two settings, may be one beneficial appro

A chart review study of 100 consecutive AIDS patients cared for by our Home Care (HC) unit was performed. The main characteristics of the sample were: M/F ratio = 3/1; mean age = 39.7 +/- 6.6; mode of transmission = 56% intravenous drug users (IVDU); Centers For Disease Control (CDC) classification = 98% C3; mean length of HC = 5.2 months. Psychopathological evaluation led to an overall rate of morbidity during HC of 73%. The most common psychiatric diagnoses were dementia and adjustment disorders. Nearly two thirds of the patients received psychopharmacological treatment; one fifth were still

In 2000, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) overtook tuberculosis (TB) as the world's leading infectious cause of adult deaths. In affluent countries, however, AIDS mortality has dropped sharply, largely because of the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Antiretroviral agents are not yet considered essential medications by international public health experts and are not widely used in the poor countries where human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) takes its greatest toll. Arguments against the use of HAART have mainly been based on the high cost of medications and the lack

OBJECTIVE: To explore biomedical and traditional health care providers' (BHPs and THPs, respectively) perceptions of good quality of care and opinions on weaknesses in the services they provide to patients with STIs and HIV/AIDS.
METHODS: Using data from a cross-sectional survey, we post-coded two open-ended questions related to THPs' and BHPs' perceptions on good quality of care and on provided care. The post-coding was done following Donabedian's framework of assessment of quality of care, and allowed transformation of qualitative data into quantitative. The analysis is based on comparison

Unfortunately, many patients in the United States experience disparities in access to surgical care, including geographic constraints, limited transportation and time, and financial hardships. Living in a "surgical care desert" results in a delay in care, driving up health care costs and reducing quality of care. In the age of COVID-19, patient access to health care has been further diminished by physical distancing guidelines, naturally increasing the need for innovative telehealth solutions. In this review, we focus on using smartphones for mobile health technology (mHealth) in the delivery

Health conditions in a developing state such as Ethiopia are precarious; in addition to the extreme spread of infectious diseases such as AIDS, oral health is also affected by the scarce knowledge and possibility of treatment. This analysis considered 77 children aged 7 to 11 from a primary school in Guraghe in Ethiopia. The presence of plaque, calculus, and caries was evaluated. For each caries, the affected tooth and the site of onset were considered. Plaque was detected in 39% of the children, calculus in 22%, and dental caries in 48% of the patients. The cavities were found to be equally d

INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, older people in Sweden's residential care facilities and home care services experienced high mortality rates. Prior to the pandemic, the care of older people in Sweden was challenged by organisational and regulatory changes, an ageing population and insufficient increases in staff numbers. These issues led to high staff turnover, increased workloads, stress, burnout and a perceived inability to provide satisfactory care. The pandemic brought about increased job strain, stress, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder among the staff who

Grant is a 13-year-old boy with trisomy 21 who presents with his mother for concerns regarding the emergence of several new disruptive behaviors. While he is verbal, he also communicates through an augmentative communication device. He currently attends a residential school. Over the past 2 months, he has begun spitting at the staff, engaging in self-injurious behaviors, placing his hands in his pants, and frequently talking about "pee and poop." Notably, Grant has undergone several changes to his educational placement and medical health over the past several months. He recently transferred to

PURPOSE: The advent of new medical devices allows patients with asthma to self-monitor at home, providing a more complete picture of their disease than occasional in-person clinic visits. This raises a pertinent question: which devices and parameters perform best in exacerbation detection?
METHODS: A total of 149 patients with asthma (90 children, 59 adults) participated in a 6-month observational study. Participants (or parents) regularly (daily for the first 2 weeks and weekly for the next 5.5 months, with increased frequency during exacerbations) performed self-examinations using 3 devices

INTRODUCTION: Children in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) often receive care outside the formal medical sector. Improving pre-hospital first aid has proven to be highly cost-effective in lowering trauma mortality. Few studies in LMIC have examined home first aid practices for injured children.
METHODS: We conducted a representative population-based survey of 200 caregivers of children under 18 years of age, representing 6520 households. Caregivers were interviewed about their first aid practices and care-seeking behaviors when a child sustained an injury at home. Injuries of interest

BACKGROUND: Depression is a mood disorder characterized by persistent low mood, loss of interest, hopelessness, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, and low self-esteem. Among people living with HIV (PLWH), depression is linked to poor psychological and medical outcomes, including lower quality of life, higher viral load, and increased mortality risk. Various psychotherapy methods, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal psychotherapy, group counselling, and rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT), have been used to treat depression. Counselling, an interpersonal pr

BACKGROUND: The incidence of tuberculosis (TB) infection in low-prevalence countries has been declining. Estimates of the risk of occupational TB in these countries are contradictory.
AIMS: To evaluate the risk of occupational TB in a low-prevalence population using a comprehensive database.
METHODS: All compensation claims in British Columbia (BC), Canada, reporting workplace TB exposure for the years 1999-2008 were reviewed. Cases with TB infection were identified for all occupational groups with five or more claims in the decade and analysis provided estimates of incidence rates of active

BACKGROUND: To facilitate the delivery of proven maternal, neonatal, and child health (MNCH) services, a new cadre of village-based frontline workers, called the Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), was created in 2005 under the aegis of the National Rural Health Mission in India. Evaluations have noted that coverage of selected MNCH services to be delivered by the ASHAs is low. Reasons for low coverage are inadequate supervision and support to ASHAs apart from insufficient skills, poor quality of training, and complexity of tasks to be performed. The proposed study aims to implement an

Long-term care (LTC) is an increasingly crucial part of Canada's healthcare system, particularly in Atlantic Canada, which has some of the highest current proportions and future projections of adults over the age of 65 nationwide. Most of the direct care within LTC homes is provided by care aides, yet little is known about this critical workforce. In this study, we explore cross-sectional data from 1,338 care aides from the four Atlantic provinces, which were collected through the Atlantic Research Collaboration on Long-term Care (ARC LTC). Overall, we find that these workers are primarily mid

Data from a probability sample of 1,625 elderly participants in the Massachusetts Health Care Panel Study were used to identify elders at high risk of long-term care (LTC) institutionalization. Advancing age, living alone, using assistance to perform basic and instrumental ADL, using an ambulation aid, and mental disorientation were significant predictors of entering a LTC facility during the six-year study period. A comparison of selected characteristics from the Massachusetts sample with a random sample of Massachusetts' Home Care Corporation recipients showed that the statewide approach to
