Behavioral symptoms, depression symptoms, and medication use in Michigan nursing home residents with dementia during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted nursing home (NH) care, including visitation restrictions, reduced staffing levels, and changes in routine care. These challenges may have led to increased behavioral symptoms, depression symptoms, and central nervous system (CNS)-active medication use among long-stay NH residents with dementia. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional study including Michigan long-stay (≥100 days) NH residents aged ≥65 with dementia based on Minimum Data Set (MDS) assessments from January 1, 2018 to June 30, 2021. Residents with schizoph

Virtual Reality Experience Intervention May Reduce Responsive Behaviors in Nursing Home Residents with Dementia: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: People with advanced dementia often exhibit responsive behaviors such as apathy, depression, agitation, aggression, and psychosis. Non-pharmacological approaches (e.g., listening to music, watching television, doing arts and crafts) are now considered as a first-line strategy to manage responsive behaviors in clinical practice due to the potential risks associated with the antipsychotic medications. To date, no evaluations of immersive non-head mounted virtual reality (VR) experience as a non-pharmacologic approach for people with advanced dementia living in nursing homes have been

[The home for the aged: a source of growing concern (2). Behavior assessment over a 2 1/2-year period].

In 1983 we published the results of 12 months of behaviour assessment in an old people's home. We noticed an increase in physical and psychosocial problems. In the following 18 months we observed a further increase, both in the cross-sectional group as well as in the longitudinal group. Newly admitted people have rather serious problems from the onset. Furthermore, there is a marked increase from then on. The most vulnerable category consists of those elderly who die or are relocated to a nursing home within a short period of time. In the past the temporary increase in care for this group was

Are you in the zone when working from home? How remote workers' daily flow experiences promote daily functioning and well-being through reduced work-home interruption behaviors.

The surge in telework after the COVID-19 pandemic has raised debates between employers and employees about how teleworkers can balance flexibility and productivity while working remotely. Our study examines how flow experiences as a volatile personal resource can facilitate teleworkers' functioning and well-being at work and at home through effortless self-regulation. Drawing on the work-home resources model, we argue that daily flow experiences promote teleworkers' work domain functioning (e.g., work engagement and need for recovery) and home domain well-being (e.g., subjective vitality and r

Older adults' evaluations of smart home control screen designs: Appearance dimensions and behavioral intentions in a multi-stage study.

In age-friendly home environments, control screens provide a point of contact between users and smart home systems, and their appearance may shape initial evaluations of these systems. This exploratory study used a multi-stage design to investigate older adults' appearance evaluations and behavioral-intention patterns across different screen designs. Similarity judgments provided by 15 experts were examined using multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis, from which eight representative designs were selected from the original pool of 87 samples. Three independent groups of older adults too

Clinicopathologic Dissociation: Robust Lafora Body Accumulation in Malin KO Mice Without Observable Changes in Home-Cage Behavior.

Lafora disease (LD) is a syndrome of progressive myoclonic epilepsy and cumulative neurocognitive deterioration caused by recessively inherited genetic lesions of EPM2A (laforin) or NHLRC1 (malin). Neuropsychiatric symptomatology in LD is thought to be directly downstream of neuronal and astrocytic polyglucosan aggregates, termed Lafora bodies (LBs), which faithfully accumulate in an age-dependent manner in all mouse models of LD. In this study, we applied home-cage monitoring to examine the extent of neurobehavioral deterioration in a model of malin-deficient LD as a means to identify robust

Mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic: Effects of stay-at-home policies, social distancing behavior, and social resources.

Social distancing is the most visible public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but its implications for mental health are unknown. In a nationwide online sample of 435 U.S. adults, conducted in March 2020 as the pandemic accelerated and states implemented stay-at-home orders, we examined whether stay-at-home orders and individuals' personal distancing behavior were associated with symptoms of depression, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), intrusive thoughts, insomnia, and acute stress. Stay-at-home order status and personal distancing were independently associated with higher symptoms

Prenatal methamphetamine exposure, home environment, and primary caregiver risk factors predict child behavioral problems at 5 years.

This study investigated the prospective association between prenatal methamphetamine (MA) exposure and child behavioral problems at 5 years while also examining the home environment at 30 months and several primary caregiver (PC) risk factors. Participants were 97 MA-exposed and 117 comparison children and their PCs enrolled in the Infant Development, Environment and Lifestyle Study. Hypotheses were that child behaviors would be adversely impacted by (a) prenatal MA exposure, (b) home environments that provided less developmental stimulation and emotional responsiveness to the child, and (c) t

An open system for automatic home-cage behavioral analysis and its application to male and female mouse models of Huntington's disease.

Changes in routine mouse home-cage behavioral activities have been used recently to study alterations of neural circuits caused by genetic and environmental modifications and by drug administration. Nevertheless, automatic assessment of mouse home-cage behaviors remains challenging due to the cost of proprietary systems and to the difficulty in adjusting systems to different monitoring conditions. Here we present software for the automatic quantification of multiple facets of mouse home-cage behaviors, suitable for continuous 24 h video monitoring. We used this program to assess behavioral cha

Sexual behavior, fertility desires and unmet need for family planning among home-based care clients and caregivers in Kenya.

As antiretroviral treatment becomes more available, community home-based care (CHBC) clients may begin to resume normal daily activities including the resumption of sexual relationships. This study examines sexual behavior, contraceptive use, unmet need for family planning and attitudes toward pregnancy in the context of HIV among CHBC participants (clients and caregivers), many of whom are HIV-positive or at risk for HIV, of the COPHIA project in Kenya. The COPHIA project was implemented by Pathfinder International with support from USAID/Kenya. We interviewed 171 CHBC clients and 183 CHBC ca

Factor analysis of the Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory in three large samples of nursing home patients with dementia and behavioral disturbance.

OBJECTIVE: Limited work has addressed the construct validity of the Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CMAI) in nursing home patients. The authors tested the CMAI factor structure by use of data from three samples of nursing home patients categorized a priori as having at least mild behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia. METHODS: CMAI data were from the baseline assessment of three randomized, placebo-controlled trials of risperidone for treating elderly nursing home patients. Exploratory factor analyses were conducted on two trials (N = 304; N = 344), and the results of these e

Estimating the impact of out-of-home placement on health risk behavior in adolescents exposed to maltreatment: An advanced causal inference approach.

BACKGROUND: Youth who experience out-of-home placement (OOHP) engage in elevated health risk behaviors (e.g., substance use, unprotected sex), with risk potentially heightened for those placed during adolescence. Estimating causal effects is challenging because maltreated youth who are placed differ systematically from those who remain in-home. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effects of adolescent OOHP on health risk behaviors, applying causal inference methods (g-estimation and inverse probability of treatment weighting; IPTW) to address selection bias and time-varying confounders. Enhancing cardiac rehabilitation adherence through home-based rehabilitation and behavioral nudges: The ERA nudge study design and rationale.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) continues to be under-utilized despite known benefits across the cardiovascular disease spectrum. Unfortunately, despite efforts to augment access, barriers persist in patient access to rehabilitation and ability to participate due to logistical challenges. A choice of home-based CR may present an appealing alternative that circumvents these known obstacles. Similarly, nudge reminders, or messages designed to elicit behavioral change, may improve adherence to CR. HYPOTHESIS: Providing a choice of home or hospital-based CR, and nudge reminders will impro

Disinhibited attachment behavior among infants reared at home: Relations to maternal severe mental illness and personality disorder symptoms.

Disinhibited attachment behavior (DAB) among infants is persistent and associated with behavioral and relational problems throughout childhood and adolescence. Little is known about risk factors for DAB among infants reared at home, although studies have linked DAB with maternal psychiatric hospitalization and maternal borderline personality disorder. The aim of the current study was to further assess the association between DAB, maternal severe mental illness (SMI; schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression), and maternal PD symptoms. Ninety-three mothers and their infants participated i

Predictors of physical activity behavior change among patients with heart failure enrolled in home-based cardiac rehabilitation intervention.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity behavior change is considered one of the most challenging lifestyle modifications in patients with heart failure. Even after participation in a cardiac rehabilitation program, most patients do not engage in the recommended level of physical activity. OBJECTIVE: To determine which baseline demographic, physical activity levels, psychological distress, and clinical variables predicted physical activity behavior change to increasing light-to-vigorous physical activity by 10,000 steps/day following participation in home-based cardiac rehabilitation intervention. The effects of a universal short-term home visiting program: Two-year impact on parenting behavior and parent mental health.

BACKGROUND: At the time of childbirth, families face heightened levels of unmet need. These needs, if left unmet, can lead parents to engage in less positive parenting practices, which in turn, increase the risk of child maltreatment. Family Connects (FC) is a universal postnatal nurse home-visiting program designed to prevent child maltreatment by supporting all families in a community through one to three visits to improve parent mental health and parenting behaviors. A randomized controlled trial of FC demonstrated improving positive parenting and reducing postpartum depression through age
