Diversity of multidrug-resistant epidemic Clostridium difficile NAP1/RT027/ST01 strains in tertiary hospitals from Honduras.

In recent years, reports of NAP1/RT027/ST01 epidemic strains of Clostridium difficile producing outbreaks of healthcare-associated diarrhea have increased in America and Europe. We cultivated multidrug-resistant NAP1/RT027/ST01 strains from the FQR2 linage from TcdA/TcdB+ stool samples obtained from patients in two Honduran hospitals. The PFGE macrorestriction patterns of two of the isolates were new. These bacteria were toxigenic and induced with different magnitude classical cytopathic effects on HeLa cells. Besides their resistance to twelve antibiotics, including to clindamycin, fluoroquin

Drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis and atypical mycobacteria isolated from patients with suspected pulmonary tuberculosis in Honduras.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is a major health problem in Central America. In Honduras, with an incidence rate of 81/100,000, it is an increasingly common cause of morbidity and hospitalization. This study was conducted to examine drug-resistant tuberculosis and prevalence of infection with atypical mycobacteria in Honduran patients with suspected pulmonary tuberculosis. METHODS: Pulmonary specimens from 235 Honduran patients with suspected tuberculosis were examined by acid-fast smears and culture. The 95 mycobacterial strains isolated were identified to species level and drug susceptibility tes

Teaching about dermatophytosis in the era of antifungal resistance: design, implementation, and evaluation of a multidisciplinary workshop in Honduras.

BACKGROUND: The global increase in fungal infections and the emergence of antifungal-resistant species, particularly Trichophyton indotineae, have exposed critical gaps in medical mycology training and diagnostic capacity, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Despite their high prevalence, dermatophytoses are underrepresented in health sciences curricula and continuing professional education, contributing to misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, and inappropriate antifungal use. METHODS: We designed, implemented, and evaluated a multidisciplinary educational workshop entitled “Medical My

Coffee farmers willingness to accept payments for ecosystem services: Evidence from a choice experiment in Honduras.

Coffee production in Central America provides a valuable yet volatile source of income for hundreds of thousands of small-scale farmers and employment for millions of workers. Expansion of coffee production into previously forested areas has caused the loss of a wide range of valuable ecosystem goods and services while contributing to global climate change and socioeconomic instability. Growth in carbon markets in agricultural settings and production of specialty coffees to meet consumer demands for products that support environmental and community outcomes suggests promise for favorable chang

First evidence of the mutations associated with pyrethroid resistance in head lice (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae) from Honduras.

BACKGROUND: The human head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis, is a cosmopolitan blood-sucking ectoparasite affecting mostly schoolchildren in both developed and developing countries. In Honduras, chemical pediculicides are the first line of treatment, with permethrin as their main active ingredient. Despite the extended use of these products, there is currently no research investigating insecticide resistance in Honduran head lice. In head lice, the most common mechanism is knockdown resistance (kdr), which is the result of two point mutations and the associated amino acid substitutions, T917I

Head lice infestations in rural Honduras: the need for an integrated approach to control neglected tropical diseases.

BACKGROUND: Pediculosis capitis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) that receives little attention in countries where it continues to be endemic. This study aimed to understand the impact of Pediculus humanus capitis infestations in the lives of Honduran children living in extreme poverty. METHODS: A qualitative study on head lice infestation was conducted in June 2016 in a rural community in Honduras. Parents were invited to bring their children for head lice inspection using a dry-combing technique with a stainless steel-toothed comb with suction power. A semistructured questionnaire was

Nutritional status of children under 5 years of age in three hurricane-affected areas of Honduras.

Hurricanes and other natural disasters can produce crop destruction, population displacement, infrastructure damage, and long-term public health consequences that include increased malnutrition among the affected populations. This paper presents the results of anthropometric measurements taken of 295 children under 5 years of age from three regions of Honduras that were affected by Hurricane Mitch, a major storm that struck Central America in the fall of 1998. The children in our study were sampled in three shelters in the capital city of Tegucigalpa; in the resettlement zone of Nueva Cholutec

Genetic diversity of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum field isolates from Honduras in the malaria elimination phase.

Malaria continues to be a major threat to public health in tropical regions, primarily affecting sub-Saharan Africa but also Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Malaria cases in Honduras have seen a significant decline and the country aims to eliminate the disease by 2030. This study examines the genetic diversity of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax in Honduras using four molecular markers (Pfama1, Pfglurp, Pvmsp3α, and Pvmsp3β), and the chloroquine resistance marker pfcrt in the context of the elimination phase. Our findings indicate that P. falciparum populations in Honduras

Honduras HIV cohort: HLA class I and CCR5-Δ32 profiles and their associations with HIV disease outcome.

We identify both canonical and novel human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-HIV associations, providing a first step toward improved understanding of HIV immune control among the understudied Honduras Mestizo population. Our results are relevant to understanding the protective or detrimental effects of HLA subtypes in Latin America because their unique HLA diversity poses challenges for designing vaccines against HIV and interpreting results from such vaccine trials. Likewise, the description of the HLA profile in an understudied population that shows a unique HLA immunogenetic background is not only r

COVID-19 Associated Rhino-Orbital Mucormycosis Complicated by Gangrenous and Bone Necrosis-A Case Report from Honduras.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a life-threatening invasive fungal infection most commonly observed in immunocompromised patients. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, a growing number of Mucorales associated infections, now termed COVID-19 associated mucormycosis (CAM), have been reported. Despite an increase in fatality reports, no cases of rhino-orbital CAM complicated with gangrenous bone necrosis have been described in the literature to date. CASE: A 56-year-old male with a recent COVID-19 diagnosis developed rhino-orbital mucormycosis after 22 days of treatment with dexamethasone. Cultures and

Recall Efforts Successfully Increase Follow-Up for Cervical Cancer Screening Among Women With Human Papillomavirus in Honduras.

Scaling up coverage of routine cervical screening in low-resource settings must be accompanied by efforts to retain women throughout the screening cascade and continuum of care, including adequate follow-up of abnormal results. The Scale-Up Project implemented human papillomavirus (HPV) testing for cervical cancer screening within public-sector health facilities in Honduras between 2015 and 2019. Women who were HPV-positive but did not have visually confirmed cervical lesions upon visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA-negative) were instructed to return to the health center after 1 year for

First record of Autolyca pallidicornis Stål, 1875 (Phasmatodea: Pseudophasmatidae) from Honduras, with notes on the genus Autolyca.

The genus Autolyca Stål, 1875 (Pseudophasmatidae: Pseudophasmatinae: Anisomorphini) comprises several species endemic to Nuclear Central America. Here, we report the first record of Autolyca pallidicornis Stål, 1875 from Honduras, based on specimens from the Celaque Mountains and historical, previously unreported museum material from a nearby locality in Gracias housed in the Field Museum of Natural History (FMNH), Chicago. The species can be distinguished by its characteristic shiny black coloration, robust abdomen, orange-yellowish antennae, and distinctive genital structures. Previously, A.

Faculty Training to Enhance Medical Education: Evaluating Laboratory Instructors at the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH).

Background Medical education is essential for training competent healthcare professionals capable of addressing evolving patient needs. Faculty development plays a crucial role in improving teaching quality and supporting competency-based education (CBE), particularly in Honduras, where reforms aim to modernize medical curricula. Despite a long history of medical training, formal, standardized faculty development programs remain limited, with many instructors relying on informal, unstandardized training. This study evaluates the impact of a structured faculty development program designed to st

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency among malaria patients of Honduras: a descriptive study of archival blood samples.

BACKGROUND: The frequency of deficient variants of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDd) is particularly high in areas where malaria is endemic. The administration of antirelapse drugs, such as primaquine, has the potential to trigger an oxidative event in G6PD-deficient individuals. According to Honduras´ national scheme, malaria treatment requires the administration of chloroquine and primaquine for both Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum infections. The present study aimed at investigating for the first time in Honduras the frequency of the two most common G6PDd variants. METHO

Non-operative management of acute appendicitis is not readily generalisable to Honduras: a viewpoint from a low-resource setting.

Non-operative management (NOM) of acute appendicitis has been validated by trials such as Appendicitis Acuta and Comparison of Outcomes of Antibiotic Drugs and Appendectomy, with treatment failure rates of approximately 25-30% within one year, raising hopes that a less invasive approach could become the standard of care. However, the conditions underpinning these trials, such as early presentation, reliable imaging, uninterrupted access to antibiotics, structured follow-up, and immediate surgical backup, are not consistently available in Honduras. Up to 54% of patients at a Honduran tertiary c
