Spermidine supplementation in honey bees: Autophagy and epigenetic modifications.

Polyamines (PAs), including putrescine (Put), spermidine (Spd), and spermine (Spm), are essential polycations with wide-ranging roles in cellular functions. PA levels decline with age, making exogenous PA supplementation, particularly Spd, an intriguing prospect. Previous research in honey bees demonstrated that millimolar Spd added to their diet increased lifespan and reinforced oxidative resilience. The present study is aimed to assess the anti-aging effects of spermidine supplementation at concentrations of 0.1 and 1 mM in honey bees, focusing on autophagy and associated epigenetic changes.

Honey bees switch mechanisms to drink deep nectar efficiently.

The feeding mechanisms of animals constrain the spectrum of resources that they can exploit profitably. For floral nectar eaters, both corolla depth and nectar properties have marked influence on foraging choices. We report the multiple strategies used by honey bees to efficiently extract nectar at the range of sugar concentrations and corolla depths they face in nature. Honey bees can collect nectar by dipping their hairy tongues or capillary loading when lapping it, or they can attach the tongue to the wall of long corollas and directly suck the nectar along the tongue sides. The honey bee f

Natural extracts, honey, and propolis as human norovirus inhibitors.

Norovirus is the most important cause of acute gastroenteritis, yet there are still no antivirals, vaccines, or treatments available. Several studies have shown that norovirus-specific monoclonal antibodies, Nanobodies, and natural extracts might function as inhibitors. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the antiviral potential of additional natural extracts, honeys, and propolis samples. Norovirus GII.4 and GII.10 virus-like particles (VLPs) were treated with different natural samples and analyzed for their ability to block VLP binding to histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs

Investigation of pesticides on honey bee carbonic anhydrase inhibition.

Carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1) plays crucial physiological roles in many different organisms, such as in pH regulation, ion transport, and metabolic processes. CA was isolated from the European bee Apis mellifera (AmCA) spermatheca and inhibitory effects of pesticides belonging to various classes, such as carbamates, thiophosphates, and pyrethroids, were investigated herein. The inhibitory effects of methomyl, oxamyl, deltamethrin, cypermethrin, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and diazinon on AmCA were analysed. These pesticides showed effective in vitro inhibition of the enzyme, at

Immunochemical screening for antimicrobial drug residues in commercial honey.

Honey samples (n = 100; origin: various countries from Eurasia, Oceania, and the Americas) were analysed by enzyme immunoassays (EIA) for tetracyclines, streptomycin, and sulfathiazole. Considering antibody specificity, these EIAs are either quantitative (streptomycin) or qualitative (tetracyclines, sulfathiazole) tests. Honey extract purification was achieved by liquid-liquid partition (tetracyclines), and by solid phase extraction-immunoaffinity chromatography (streptomycin, sulfathiazole). Detection limits were 20 micrograms kg-1 (tetracycline equivalents), 10 micrograms kg-1 (streptomycin)

Systemic reactions during maintenance immunotherapy with honey bee venom.

Immunotherapy with hymenoptera venoms is safe and effective in most patients but treatment failures have been reported. Five patients experienced systemic symptoms of anaphylaxis when they were in maintenance immunotherapy with honey bee venom. In one case, the patient presented a severe life-threatening reaction when stung by a honey bee. Three others had the development of new clinical sensitivity suggesting a re-sensitization. This occurred in the fifth patient after a severe viral infection. By means of a rush protocol and monthly doses of 200 to 400 micrograms of honey bee venom, the pati

Honey and other environmental risk factors for infant botulism.

Infant botulism results from the in vivo production of toxin by Clostridium botulinum after it has colonized the infant's gut. Epidemiologic and laboratory investigations of this recently recognized disease were undertaken to identify risk factors and routes by which C. botulinum spores might reach susceptible infants. Clostridium botulinum organisms, but no preformed toxin, were identified in six different honey specimens fed to three California patients with infant botulism, as well as from 10% (9/90) of honey specimens studied. By food exposure history, honey was significantly associated wi

[Advances in manufacturing measurement technology for 5-HMF formed during honey-refining process for large traditional Chinese medicine honeyed pills].

Large traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) honeyed pills are widely recognized for their stable therapeutic efficacy and convenient administration, occupying a prominent position among classical TCM dosage forms. However, the honey-refining process not only directly affects the efficacy and stability of these formulations but also serves as the primary source of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural(5-HMF), a potentially toxic compound. In light of its toxicological risks and the residue limits specified in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China(2020 edition), achieving real-time and precise contr

Specific wavelengths of light modulate honey bee locomotor activity.

Light plays a crucial role in honey bee (Apis mellifera) behavior by influencing foraging, navigation, and locomotor activity (LMA). While the effects of light on LMA have been previously documented, the specific roles of different wavelengths have remained unknown. In this study, we investigated how exposure to specific infrared (IR, 849 nm), green (528 nm), blue (447 nm), and ultraviolet (UV, 372 nm) wavelengths, as well as their combinations, affected LMA. Specifically, using a custom-built illumination setup and the Api-TRACE video tracking system, we monitored and analyzed bee movement in

Fortified Chestnut Honey Triggers Apoptosis in Colon Cancer Cells.

Honey, traditionally a food, is now also used as a complement in cancer therapy due to its anticancer properties. This study aimed to evaluate in vitro whether thyme and chestnut honey samples fortified with bee products that had previously shown apoptotic effects on the hepatic system, presented cytotoxic and apoptotic properties in colon cancer (Caco-2) and normal (CCD-18) cells. Cytotoxicity was assessed using the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay, while apoptosis was evaluated through cell cycle analysis, annexin V binding, and the activation of DR5 (

Heightened sensitivity in high-grooming honey bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

Honey bees use grooming to defend against the devastating parasite Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman. We observed the grooming responses of individual bees from colonies previously chosen for high- and low-grooming behavior using a combination of mite mortality and mite damage. Our aim was to gain insight into specific aspects of grooming behavior to compare if high-grooming bees could discriminate between a standardized stimulus (chalk dust) and a stimulus of live Varroa mites and if bees from high-grooming colonies had greater sensitivity across different body regions than bees from low

Analysis of contaminant residues in honey bee hive matrices.

Pollinators provide ecological services essential to maintaining our food supply and propagating natural habitats. Populations are in decline due to environmental stressors including pesticides, pathogens, and habitat loss. To better understand the impacts of pesticide exposures on colony health, a field survey in Ohio, USA was conducted to monitor the potential contamination of honey bee colonies by pesticides. Apiaries (n = 10) were situated across an agricultural gradient and samples were collected over a 4-week period encompassing corn planting. Dead bees from entrance traps (DBT), pollen,

Wild honey poisoning: A case report from western Nepal.

Wild honey has been used for several purposes in South-Asia and Eastern Europe since long ago. One of the commonest is medicinal purposes, especially for gastrointestinal disorders (peptic ulcer disease, dyspepsia, and gastritis), hypertension, and an aphrodisiac (sexual stimulant). However, honey produced from the nectar of few rhododendron species contains a toxin known as grayanotoxin, which acts on the sodium channel and prevents its inactivation leading to vagal activation, causing hypotension and bradycardia. Here, we report a case of 55 years woman who reported to our Emergency Departme
