Childhood stye and adult rosacea.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about how individuals with a predisposition for rosacea appear in childhood. This retrospective, matched control, longitudinal study examined the relationship between childhood stye and adult rosacea. METHODS: The records of the Rochester Epidemiology Project were examined to identify patients who received care for stye or blepharitis between ages 2 and 17 years, and received care for any cause at age 40 years or older. Patients were matched by group to control subjects (1:2). RESULTS: Patients with stye during childhood (N = 201) had a higher prevalence of adult

Build Your Own Eye: A Method for Teaching Ocular Anatomy and Pathophysiology.

AUDIENCE: Residents and medical students. INTRODUCTION: The eye is a critical, but often neglected, part of medical learning. This team-based learning (TBL) module was developed for emergency medicine residents and medical students; however, is applicable to any learner who should know basic eye anatomy and pathology. Emergency medicine teams, primary care providers, and ophthalmologists are most likely to encounter ocular emergencies.1-3 These emergencies are uncommon but quite dire when they occur and can result in permanent disability and life-changing morbidity.2, 4 It is critical that me

The 2024 Saudi Pharmacotherapy Didactic Curriculum Toolkit: A Modified Delphi Study.

BACKGROUND: Several pharmacy schools in Saudi Arabia (S.A.) refer to the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) pharmacotherapy toolkit in developing their pharmacotherapy curriculum. However, the ACCP toolkit does not specifically address the healthcare needs of the Saudi population. A tailored pharmacotherapy curriculum that offers graduates the essential competencies to better serve the nation's needs is warranted. This study aims to develop a population-centered didactic pharmacotherapy toolkit for the Saudi population to assist pharmacy schools in designing pharmacotherapy course co

Ocular toxicity associated with antibody-drug conjugates in cancer therapy: a comprehensive review.

Ocular toxicity from anti-cancer drugs is frequently overlooked, largely because it is non-life-threatening, whereas clinical priorities often center on adverse events that pose immediate risks to survival. Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) have emerged as an important therapeutic modality in oncology, offering potent cytotoxicity against tumor cells through the targeted delivery of payloads. However, this potency also introduces a spectrum of toxicities, among which ocular toxicity has gained increasing attention. ADC-induced ocular toxicity can impair visual function and significantly compromi

Ocular adverse events associated with antibody-drug conjugates for cancer: evidence and management strategies.

Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) are a fast-growing class of cancer drugs designed to selectively deliver cytotoxic payloads through antibody binding to cancer cells with high expression of the target antigen, thus reducing systemic exposure and minimizing off-target effects. However, ADCs are associated with various ocular adverse events (AEs) that may impact treatment administration and patient outcomes. In this review, we provide a summary of ocular AEs associated with approved and investigational ADCs, recommendations for the mitigation and management of ocular AEs, current guidelines and e

Evaluating the Impact of Insurer-Sponsored Health Coaching on Hospitalization and Costs in India: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Health coaching programs are emerging as a promising intervention to improve disease management and reduce healthcare costs, particularly in the context of insurer-sponsored wellness initiatives. While such programs have shown positive outcomes in Western healthcare settings, their effectiveness in India remains underexplored. This study examines the impact of a health coaching program implemented by a prominent Indian health insurer (Aditya Birla Health Insurance), focusing on hospitalization rates and claims paid among high-risk policyholders. To assess the intervention's effectiveness, a re

How does academia respond to the burden of infectious and parasitic disease?

BackgroundAcademic research is one of the main avenues through which humans can fight the threat of infectious diseases. However, there have been concerns regarding whether the academic system has provided sufficient efforts to fight infectious diseases we potentially face. Answering these questions could contribute to evidence-based recommendations for setting research priorities and third-mission policies.MethodsWith a focus on one of the most common categories of communicable diseases, infectious and parasitic diseases (IPDs), we searched Web of Science for articles and reviews relevant to
