Granular, Slow-Release Fertilizer from Urea-formaldehyde, Ammonium Polyphosphate, and Amorphous Silica Gel: A New Strategy Using Cold Extrusion.

A new granular, slow-release fertilizer prepared by a cold-extrusion strategy (GSRFEx) based on urea-formaldehyde (UF), ammonium polyphosphate (APP), and amorphous silica gel (ASG) was presented. Characterizations showed that there were strong hydrogen-bond interactions and good compatibility among UF, APP, and ASG in GSRFEx. The mechanical properties as well as the slow-release properties of GSRFEx were greatly enhanced after the addition of APP and ASG to UF. Rape pot experiments indicated that GSRFEx could improve N-use efficiency dramatically and thereby facilitate the growth of rape. Impo

Spatial and Seasonal Variations in the Bacterial Community of an Anthropogenic Impacted Urban Stream.

Environmental changes and human activities can alter the structure and diversity of aquatic microbial communities. In this work, we analyzed the bacterial community dynamics of an urban stream to understand how these factors affect the composition of river microbial communities. Samples were taken from a stream situated in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which flows through residential, peri-urban horticultural, and industrial areas. For sampling, two stations were selected: one influenced by a series of industrial waste treatment plants and horticultural farms (PL), and the other influenced by resid

Towards sustainable valorisation of Acacia melanoxylon biomass: Characterization of mature and juvenile plant tissues.

In Mediterranean area, Acacia melanoxylon biomass is an abundant waste material from non-native and invasive tree species control actions, requiring suitable disposal. Valorisation of such biomass residues requires its complete characterization to best approach the full potential of each plant material that could suit specific applications. This study compares mature and juvenile A. melanoxylon plant tissues (wood and bark) from two stands in different locations, regarding their chemical characteristics and organic growing media properties, such as mineral content and phytotoxicity effect for

Functional Endophytes Regulating Plant Secondary Metabolism: Current Status, Prospects and Applications.

Endophytes, which are widely found in host plants and have no harmful effects, are a vital biological resource. Plant endophytes promote plant growth and enhance plants' resistance to diseases, pests, and environmental stresses. In addition, they enhance the synthesis of important secondary metabolites in plants and improve the potential applicability of plants in agriculture, medicine, food, and horticulture. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in understanding the interaction between endophytes and plants and summarize the construction of synthetic microbial communities (SynComs

Nonmedical Uses of Antibiotics: Time to Restrict Their Use?

The global crisis of antibiotic resistance has reached a point where, if action is not taken, human medicine will enter a postantibiotic world and simple injuries could once again be life threatening. New antibiotics are needed urgently, but better use of existing agents is just as important. More appropriate use of antibiotics in medicine is vital, but the extensive use of antibiotics outside medical settings is often overlooked. Antibiotics are commonly used in animal husbandry, bee-keeping, fish farming and other forms of aquaculture, ethanol production, horticulture, antifouling paints, fo

"Recovering With Nature": A Review of Ecotherapy and Implications for the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Connection with nature has been considered beneficial for psychological well-being since times of evolution. Differences in Indian and Western thoughts have viewed natural elements in different lights, varying between eco-centrism to anthropocentrism. The intrusion of technology and digitalized lives as a result of globalization has decreased connectedness with nature. Ecotherapy is a novel form of psychotherapeutic technique based on explicit environmental or ecological interventions. Social and therapeutic horticulture, animal-assisted interventions, care farming, green exercise, environment

Seroprevalence and risk factors of Leptospira sp. among different groups in the Jordanian population: first study.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is re-emerging as a major public health problem worldwide. However, there are limited data on the disease from the Middle East, including from Jordan, despite recent outbreaks occurring in Jordan's neighbouring countries. METHODS: Sera samples from 809 participants in 11 governorates were tested for Leptospira sp. seropositivity to determine the seroprevalence and risk factors of Leptospira sp. in Jordan. RESULTS: Overall, 3.3% (95% confidence interval [CI] 2.2 to 4.8) of individuals tested were seropositive for Leptospira antibodies. Individuals who drink surface w

The Gentleman Vanishes: Dementia, Caretaking and the Life of the Mind.

This essay recounts the author's journey with her father during his prolonged decline due to dementia. The experience pushed her to break out of the confines of conventional scholarly research in her academic field of architectural history to a multi-disciplinary consideration of nineteenth-century environmental, sensory and horticultural therapies for the mentally ill. During her father's illness, she discovered the tangible therapeutic benefits of momentary engagements with his environment through his five senses and through the emotional filter of poetry. This reorientation to sensory and p

Expert assessment of illegal collecting impacts on Venus flytraps and priorities for research on illegal trade.

Illegal collecting of wild Venus flytraps (Dionaea muscipula) for the horticultural trade represents a persistent threat to populations of the species across their endemic range in the coastal plain of North and South Carolina (United States). Although wild collecting of Venus flytraps is not a novel threat, there has been very little research on the impacts of collecting on the species' conservation to date or why an illegal trade persists alongside a legal one. We drew on qualitative expert stakeholder elicitation to contextualize the threat of illegal collecting to the long-term conservatio

Transcriptome analysis and functional identification of transfer RNA-derived fragments in grape leaves exposed to UV-C radiation.

Transfer RNA-derived fragments (tRFs) are noncoding small RNAs derived from transfer RNAs (tRNAs) in microorganisms, animals and plants. In plants, tRFs are known to respond to environmental stimuli, including heat, oxidative stress and UV radiation; however, their specific functions in horticultural plants, such as grapevine, remain poorly understood. In this study, we used RNA-seq to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in grape leaves exposed to UV-C radiation. A total of 1329 and 8055 of genes were differentially expression after 1 and 6 h of UV-C treatment, respectively. We iden

Nutrient challenges with solid-phase anaerobic digestate as a peat substitute - Storage decreased ammonium toxicity but increased phosphorus availability.

The solid fraction (SD) obtained after liquid - solid separation of anaerobic digestate is interesting as a potential fertilizer as well as a peat substitute in horticultural growing substrates. We investigated the effect of incubation of the SD obtained by screw-press separation of digestate produced from food waste and plant residues on potentially plant available mineral nutrients and plant growth. The NH4-N concentration was initially > 1000 mg L-1 but rapidly decreased, probably due to NH3 emission promoted by a high initial pH. No nitrate was detected during the first four weeks of incub

Growing health in UK prison settings.

Globally, prisoners tend to come from marginalized and socially disadvantaged sections of the society and exhibit a high incidence of ill health, linked to social exclusion and multiple complex needs. Prisons therefore offer an important opportunity to tackle inequality and injustice, through promoting health, reducing reoffending and facilitating community reintegration. This paper reports on and critically discusses findings from an evaluative research study, which aimed to identify and explore impacts of prisoners' participation in an innovative social and therapeutic horticultural programme

The role of underutilized fruits in nutritional and economic security of tribals: a review.

The tribal people of Rajasthan are severely malnourished along with multiple nutrient-deficiency disorders due to ignorance about importance of fruits and vegetables in their diets. The tribal areas are full of biodiversity having natural vegetation which is not harnessed fully. Due to which a wide gap is formed between health and optimal use of natural sources of nutrients, i.e., underutilized crops. The crops, which are neither grown commercially on large scale nor traded widely, may be termed as underutilized horticultural crops. These crops are cultivated, traded, and consumed locally. The

Agricultural Applications for Antimicrobials. A Danger to Human Health: An Official Position Statement of the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists.

The use of antibiotics in agriculture, particularly in food-producing animals, is pervasive and represents the overwhelming majority of antibiotic use worldwide. The link between antibiotic use in animals and antibiotic resistance in humans is unequivocal. Transmission can occur by ingesting undercooked meats harboring resistant bacteria, by direct contact of animals by animal handlers, and by various other means. Antibiotics used in aquaculture and antifungals used in horticulture are also an evolving threat to human health. Regulations aimed at decreasing the amount of antibiotics used in fo

Transcriptomic insights into the molecular regulatory mechanism of staminody in Chinese narcissus (Narcissus tazetta subsp. chinensis).

Staminody (petaloid stamen) contributes to floral diversity in horticultural plants, yet its molecular regulation remains poorly understood. Using two Chinese narcissus varieties, 'Jinzhanyintai' (single-flowered) and 'Yulinglong' (double-flowered), we conducted anatomical and histological analyses, which confirmed that the petaloid stamens of 'Yulinglong' arise from a homeotic transformation of normal stamens of 'Jinzhanyintai', as evidenced by conserved internal locule-like structures and gradual morphological intermediates. Comparative transcriptomics across five key developmental stages re

Mapping the CP-Transgene Insert in the Papaya Genome and Developing a Hermaphrodite Transgenic Hybrid with Broad-Spectrum Resistance to Papaya Ringspot Virus.

Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) limits papaya production worldwide. Previously, we generated transgenic lines of hybrid Tainung No.2 (TN-2) carrying the coat protein (CP) gene of PRSV with broad resistance to PRSV strains. Unfortunately, all of them were female, unacceptable for growers and consumers in practical applications. With our reported flanking sequences and the newly released papaya genomic information, the CP-transgene insert was identified at a non-coding region in chromosome 3 of the papaya genome, and the flanking sequences were verified and extended. The female transgenic line 16-0

Health-promoting prisons: theory to practice.

As a setting, prisons offer a unique opportunity to invest in the health of disadvantaged and marginalised populations and address health inequalities and social exclusion - thereby achieving sustainable improvements in well-being for offenders and their families and in turn, helping to reduce rates of re-offending. This article draws on English and French experiences and doctoral research to advocate a shift from a pathogenic model towards a salutogenic model of health as a helpful way to address inequalities and thus, by promoting joined-up working across justice and wider systems, impact po

European multinational outbreak of Salmonella Umbilo linked to rocket salad and baby spinach traced to buffalo farms in Italy, 2024 to 2025.

Following RASFF Alert 2024.7033 (Salmonella Umbilo in rocket from Italy), an investigation was conducted on three buffalo farms in Salerno, Southern Italy, located near the horticultural company implicated in the production of contaminated rocket salad and baby spinach linked to the outbreak. Salmonella Umbilo was isolated from faecal samples of buffalo calves in one of the three farms, and whole-genome sequencing confirmed a genetic match with the outbreak strain. Irrigation channels positioned close to animal housing were identified as potential contamination pathways. Corrective measures we
