Oral health and hospitalization in Western Australian children.

Over the past 20 years, the prevalence of dental disease in Western Australian children has diminished. The causes of this significant improvement in health are associated with better care models, water fluoridation and changes in lifestyle. In this study, the authors examine the reasons for hospitalization for oral health conditions in Western Australia for the calendar year 1995 using the Health Department of WA database. A total of 3,754 episodes of care (4,395 bed days) was recorded for dental conditions. Dental caries resulted in the fifth and sixth highest number of episodes of hospitali

Major bleeding after hospitalization for deep-venous thrombosis.

PURPOSE: Most studies of oral anticoagulant-related bleeding have analyzed the incidence of adverse outcomes among patients with a variety of different conditions and without any comparison with a control group. We determined the incidence, time course, and risk factors associated with major bleeding after hospital discharge among patients with deep-vein thrombosis, and estimated the excess risk of bleeding associated with oral anticoagulant therapy. METHODS: A total of 22,000 adults were hospitalized in California for 3 or more days with a diagnosis of deep-venous thrombosis between January

[High rate of early hospitalization in healthy newborns].

OBJECTIVE: The length of hospital stay of healthy term newborns and their mothers varies in different developed countries. The American Academy of Pediatrics defines early postpartum discharge (EPD) as a discharge occurring within 48 hours of postpartum. EPD has been advocated by patients as part of the humanization of care after delivery and by health services as a more efficient management of resources. Controversies in relation to EPD focus on its impact on initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding, the possible increase of readmissions of newborns with jaundice and the influence on newbo

Elective hospitalization in the management of twin pregnancies.

We sought to evaluate the effectiveness of a policy of early elective hospitalization on the outcomes of 522 consecutive twin gestations delivered at our institution between 1983-1987. During the first 2 years (1983-1985), 237 twin pregnancies were delivered with a policy of elective hospitalization when twin pregnancy was diagnosed between 24-32 weeks' gestation. When possible, elective hospitalization started at 24 weeks' gestation. Electively admitted women remained hospitalized until 34 weeks' gestation, at which time they were discharged unless complications developed requiring continued

Hospitalization of children with status asthmaticus: a review.

A review of hospital admissions of patients with status asthmaticus at the Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles showed a marked increase in admissions in recent years. Asthma mortality did not increase. Patients tended to be young, boys, and black as compared with patients admitted to a general hospital. Interviews with 100 patients and/or their parents admitted between February and June 1988 indicated that the majority of patients had frequent, severe, and/or disabling symptoms and a significant number were undertreated. Forty-five percent of these patients and 46% of all patients admitted betwe

[Solitary confinement as risk factor for psychiatric hospitalization].

The subjects of this study are prisoners who were hospitalized from custody in a psychiatric clinic. All of such patients of one psychiatric clinic during the period from 1976 till 1978 were compared with a random sample of other psychiatric patients using case reports and other data. Differences were found concerning social, personal, psychiatric, and criminal history as well as psychopathological state and diagnosis. Compared to the complete population of prisoners of the area, prisoners from solitary confinement (mostly remanding custody) were overrepresented. Other risk factors for psychia

[Epidemiologic aspects of the first hospitalization of schizophrenics].

A clinico-epidemiological analysis was performed with respect to the primary hospitalization of schizophrenic patients in the Tomsk Mental hospital from 1948--1951 (the I period), 1959--1961 (the II period), 1969--1971 (the III period). The study demonstrated a statistically significant increase in the level of primary hospitalization (per 10000 population) from 0.77 in the I period, 1.4 in the II period to 2.29 in the III one. An increase in the amount of hospitalizations was mainly due to patients with a slowly progress development of the disease. An extensive use of aminazin treatment in 19

Hospitalization of the elderly patient for acute illness.

There is a paucity of studies on the characteristics of elderly patients who are admitted for treatment of acute disorders, even though their utilization of hospitals is high. This study involved 828 older persons admitted to a general hospital during a period of six months, for the treatment of acute illness. The typical patient appeared to be a woman in her 70's who entered the medical department because of a cardiovascular or a gastrointestinal disturbance, stayed no longer than 10 days, and returned home to live with her spouse. Though such a person apparently needed minimal assistance in

Stopping or continuing chronic antihypertensive therapy during hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: Elevated blood pressure is common among hospitalized patients, but the effects of withholding chronic antihypertensive therapy during hospitalization remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: To assess the association between continuation versus discontinuation of chronic antihypertensive medications during hospitalization and short- and long-term outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective propensity score-matched cohort study included adults (≥18 years) with chronic hypertension hospitalized in eight Clalit Health Services hospitals in Israel from January 2014 to May 2024. Hospitalization Experiences Among Nursing Home Residents With Dementia.

OBJECTIVES: Hospital admissions among nursing home residents with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) are burdensome, expensive, and provide limited clinical benefit. Compared with other patients, those with ADRD are more likely to experience adverse events when hospitalized. Our objective was to comprehensively describe the in-hospital experience of nursing home patients with ADRD. DESIGN: We analyzed 1 randomly selected hospitalization per patient from the electronic health record. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Adult patients with an ADRD diagnosis from a single health system in O

CAPABLE for People After Hospitalization: A Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Following hospitalization, nearly 30% of older adults lose some independence. This can lead to rehospitalization, nursing home admission, and increased dependence. CAPABLE, an evidence-based program, increases independence among older adults with functional limitations but has not been tested in recently hospitalized people. METHODS: This randomized clinical trial enrolled 268 low-income community-dwelling adults who had been discharged to home from the hospital 60 days prior, had a home health episode, yet had remaining difficulties in at least one activity of daily living. Tetanus development during hospitalization in an older adult.

Tetanus is a fatal infectious disease caused by neurotoxins produced by Clostridium tetani. Currently, tetanus has no confirmatory tests; it is often diagnosed based on clinical signs and symptoms. Due to vaccination, tetanus is uncommon in developed countries; however, it remains an important differential diagnosis, especially in older adults. Herein, we report the case of an older adult who developed tetanus during the course of his disease although no findings indicated tetanus on admission. Thus, tetanus can develop during hospitalization, and if symptoms such as dysphagia or difficulty op

Causes of Hospitalization in Children with Down Syndrome.

Background and Objectives: Down syndrome (DS) is the most common chromosomal disorder in the world. It is caused by the imbalance of the chromosomal constitution of 21 by free trisomy, translocation or mosaicism. Children and adolescents with Down syndrome have immune dysregulation and are more susceptible to infections. This study aims to evaluate hospitalizations of children and adolescents with DS in the pediatric ward of Botucatu Clinics Hospital (HCFMB) and to classify the population of children included in the study according to age, diagnosis, outpatient follow-up, length of stay and ne

Medical respite post-hospitalization for adults experiencing homelessness.

Nurses provide care in various settings and advocate for vulnerable populations. Recognizing the need for follow-up care after hospitalization and mobilizing necessary resources are part of caring for patients, including those experiencing homelessness. This article discusses how one community coalition assessed gaps in care that might be met by establishing medical respite in the community.

Characterizing risk factors for hospitalization for psoriasis patients.

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease with a large economic impact. Inpatient care is a significant expense, and about one-third of patients admitted for psoriasis are readmitted. Reducing hospitalizations and readmissions is an important goal for improving outcomes for psoriasis patients. The objective of this study is to characterize patients who are hospitalized for psoriasis, and differentiate features for patients with a single hospitalization from those who were hospitalized multiple times during the study period. Hospitalized psoriasis patients were identified from an in-patient dat
