Ebola Holding Units at government hospitals in Sierra Leone: evidence for a flexible and effective model for safe isolation, early treatment initiation, hospital safety and health system functioning.

The 2014-2015 West African outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) claimed the lives of more than 11,000 people and infected over 27,000 across seven countries. Traditional approaches to containing EVD proved inadequate and new approaches for controlling the outbreak were required. The Ministry of Health & Sanitation and King's Sierra Leone Partnership developed a model for Ebola Holding Units (EHUs) at Government Hospitals in the capital city Freetown. The EHUs isolated screened or referred suspect patients, provided initial clinical care, undertook laboratory testing to confirm EVD status, ref

Genomic insights into non-tuberculous mycobacteria isolated from patients in a Chinese hospital.

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are increasingly recognized as important opportunistic pathogens, yet the genomic basis of their antimicrobial resistance and virulence in clinical settings remains incompletely understood. We performed whole-genome sequencing on 28 clinical isolates of NTM collected from Chinese patients (primarily bronchoalveolar lavage fluid) between 2022 and 2025, combined with broth microdilution susceptibility testing and comprehensive bioinformatics analysis. The collection comprised diverse species, including Mycobacterium intracellulare, Mycobacterium chimaera, Mycob

First case report of Shewanella indica isolated from a hospitalized patient in Serbia.

Over the past decade, Shewanella spp. have been increasingly recognized as opportunistic pathogens, particularly in patients with malignancies, neutropenia, severe heart failure, renal insufficiency, and hepatobiliary diseases. Shewanella indica is a rarely reported species within the Shewanella genus, and its role in human infection remains poorly documented. In this study, we report the first case of S. indica isolated from the stool of a critically ill 72-year-old man in Serbia with multiple pre-existing comorbidities and co-infections. Initial identification using the VITEK 2 system miscla

Effects of Cessation of Single-Room Isolation on Transmission of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus in a Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Single room isolation with contact precautions is widely regarded as a fundamental strategy to prevent the transmission of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). However, its implementation demands substantial resources, limiting its universal application to all MDROs. In this study, we assessed the effect of discontinuing single room isolation for vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE). METHODS: This is a retrospective, observational study conducted at a single 750-bed tertiary center. We conducted an interrupted time series analysis to compare incidence rates and trends of new-

Biofilm Formation by Hospital-Acquired Resistant Bacteria Isolated from Respiratory Samples.

BACKGROUND: Hospital-acquired resistant infections (HARI) are infections, which develop 48 h or more after admission to a healthcare facility. HARI pose a considerably acute challenge, due to limited treatment options. These infections are associated bacterial biofilms, which act as a physical barrier to diverse external stresses, such as desiccation, antimicrobials and biocides. We assessed the influence of multiple factors on biofilm production by HARI -associated bacteria. METHODS: Bacteria were isolated from samples of patients with respiratory HARI who were hospitalized during 2020-2022
